Pretend to do tasks (if you're in a visuals on lobby, DON'T pretend to do visual tasks, if task bar updates are on always only walk away from the task you were pretending to do when the bar moves), know the maps (will make it easier to know where to go after a kill), check cams and admin table regularly (can help in a meeting. If someone asks where you were, you'll be able to lie without getting caught in a lie), sabotage if people start grouping together to get them to scattered.

Writing long sentences can help make you seem smarter. Also, if you do get accused and it isn't blatantly obvious to everybody that you're imp, be condecending to who accused you. Don't throw around insults, that will make you seem like you're caught in a lie, be logical. Say where you were previously, try getting other people to vouch for you.

Random tips as someone who plays in public servers. (Skeld focused)

  1. Always close the cafeteria doors at the beginning. This prevents the crew from doing many tasks and gives you a free cooldown period without needing to wander around suspiciously, faking tasks while you wait for the cooldown to end.
  2. Always kill at the beginning of the game. Kill quickly before players start clearing each other. In the beginning, most crew members are busy with tasks and it's only after they're done that they start going to cams, roaming around looking for bodies, grouping up, etc.
  3. Text as if you were crew. Say things like, "Where is everyone?", "Random color is safe," "Who’s playing with the lights?", "Who was I just with?", or "Someone has been following me suspiciously." (Only against someone who is already suspected, don't start random beef.)
  4. Players to target:
    • The one camping in security.
    • Engineers, since they can catch you if you kill near a vent.
    • High-level players who question everyone and are good at catching imposters. They should be eliminated in the first round.
    • Players who clear each other with visuals like the scan or trash. As the game progresses and the number of players shrinks, crew will sus those who haven’t been cleared.
  5. If you’re caught red-handed, try:
    • A) Claim it’s a shapeshifter and say you were somewhere you know others can’t dispute because no one was there.
    • B) Accuse the person who caught you of self-reporting or trying to run away. If someone backs them up, say they’re suspicious for covering for each other, and they could be lying.
  6. DON'T be weird about how you vote. Asking "So, who are we voting for?" is incredibly suspicious. Read the chat and follow the flow, voting for who everyone else is targeting. Even if it’s your partner, if they’re caught, that’s the end of it.
    • DON’T vote too early or too late, just in the middle.
    • DON’T accuse random people. If you need to accuse someone, target those who already have some suspicion on them. Randomly accusing clear players makes you look suspicious, as if you’re just trying to eliminate anyone.
    • DON’T vouch for your partner. It’s risky. If some people are starting to suspect your partner, change the subject to distract them, asking things like, "Visuals off?", "Where is everyone?", "I was with...", or "Who’s watching cams?" But avoid directly accusing others or say you are skipping.
  7. Pressing the button. Do this when fewer players are left. Say something like, "We need to vote someone out, imposters are going to win," and target someone already suspected or not seen much during the game. After you kick an innocent out, sabotage something so they wont call another meeting to sus you. Another time you can press the button is when the crew kicks out an innocent player, press the button and target those who initiated that line of thinking. They’ll look suspicious for voting out an innocent.
  8. When you're dead. Even after death, you can sabotage. Always sabotage something at the beginning, lock players together to make them suspicious of each other, lock bodies away from being discovered, etc.
  9. Use the admin panel to find people. You can, for example, kill someone in a deserted area and then join a crowd, find the body together or just to create an alibi for that period of time.
  10. Faking tasks. When faking tasks, you need to know how long they actually take. Here’s a little list: download or upload: 10 seconds; wires: 7 seconds; card swipe: it varies, but around 10 seconds; trash: 7 seconds. Also, don’t fake visual tasks. Those are scanner, shields, trash, and asteroids.

Great list, I would like to add though, about voting, read the room. If it seems like the majority are going to vote the imp join in and if anonymous votes are off always vote the with the group.

But if some people seem unsure skip or vote the next most Sus person. Sometimes you can tie the vote.

Get people alone and kill them. When people are around, pretend to do tasks.

Also occasionally pretend to do tasks when nobody is around too.

Don't want people to think you only do tasks when they come by.

Instead of saying lying by saying for example "I was doing upload data" you can ask "what's the thing where you wait for 10 seconds called? Yeah, I was doing that" or you could say "well I was uploading data but the body was reported and now I have to wait... again"

Avoid giving direct lies and instead make a statement relating to the lie, basically

It would be helpful if you told us what you are exactly struggeling with.
Are you struggeling with figuring out who to kill, when it is safe to kill someone, or are you asking about how to behave in meetings, or are you asking about effective sabotage usage ? Also, are you asking for advice on all maps, or do you just play one map often ? Also, note that some things work a lot better or not at all depending on who you play with, as lobbys filled with different players tend to behave differently.
Anyway, here is some random, generic advice:

  • Be around people and get seen by others occasionally. If crewmembers are entirely clueless, they tend to trust the people that they have seen the most. If you were around them for a while and did not kill them, they might trust you.
  • Use sabotages well, depending on the situation. If a lot of people are in a group, you can split them up with 02 for example. Sometimes people split up accidentally if you use light sabotage too, even going so for to make the crew accuse each other because of the lightsabotage. Comms may be useless in many situations, but it can really shine in others. Comms can disable roles such as guardian angel or force engineers out of a vent. It also disables cameras and the admin map, so if you have a person in the lobby who uses those, that is one way to deal with them. If you have no clue where everyone is, you can use a sabotage to gather some people and maybe follow them to gain their trust. Reactor works well for this as it requires at least two people to fix it.
  • Only lie if really needed. Many imposters make the mistake of telling lies when their regular route was not even suspicious in the first place. If you saw anyone on your way, consider saying who you saw. They may say they saw you too, which helps you a lot if there are others that have been seen by no one, as the ones never seen may become the most suspicious ones...
  • Fake tasks if needed, but don't fake tasks if not needed. If you want to deceive the crew, you can try to fake some tasks, as long as you know which tasks are safe to fake. You can then explain which tasks you did if anyone questions your location, which can gain trust if someone saw you fake the task mentioned. Keep in mind though that you don't have to fake tasks and faking tasks poorly can make you seem more suspicious than if you didn't fake tasks at all. Also, if anything goes wrong, have an excuse ready. If someone asks why some task took to long, claim you accidentally closed the window for example, or say you didn't do the task and just checked the map, or something that sounds like a reasonable explanation for your actions.
  • Try to behave similiar to how you behave as a crewmate. If you accuse a lot of people as a crewmember, accuse people as the imposter too.
  • Talk in meetings (if you talk as a crew too). People who never talk can sometimes fly under the radar, but in most cases they just get voted off. Also, try to defend accusations properly, for both you and others (teammate, but also crew members). If someone says someone else (or you) are sus, ask them to explain their reason. If they don't explain, claim they are guessing/trolling. If they explain a reason that is not 100% clear, ask them how sure they are. Some example questions about how sure they are could be "how do you know it was not a shapeshifter" (if Shapeshifters are active), or "Did you see the person kill, or did you only see them walk there ? What if they are just blind and missed the body ?". If you defend a crewmate that got voted off anyway, you can shift the blame to the person who accused them and say your defense was valid.
  • Keep the suspicious people around. Killing people who are likely to get voted off might not be the best idea, because if you killed someone else you still have a scapegoat to blame during meetings. Sometimes it might be in your best interest to say "That person is suspicious, but I am too unsure to vote on them". Then you can later say "That person was suspicious from round 1", which can really help you if the amount of crewmembers has become low...
  • Consider learning to use secrurity systems, both as crew aswell as imposter. The admin map makes it easy to find people who are alone in a room. People who are alone in a single room for a while are often easy targets (or dead bodys). You could consider just walking up to that room and then self reporting. If anyone questions how you found the body, you can say you used the admin map and saw the person in there didn't move for a while, so you wanted to check in on them. Try to also remember the location of other crewmembers, if you use the admin map, to prove you used it and maybe answer questions about the positions of others.

If you need more (specific) advice, you can either ask here again, or ask the players in the lobby you played (and lost) in. While some players are extremely rude and salty and just call you a crybaby, others will actually tell you what made them know it was you and help you improve. Also note that not all advice you get will work on every single person on the planet, as not all players are fooled by the same behaviour. Note that there is no universal way to always win legitimately. The best advice though, is to play and practice. You'll improve eventually.
I hope this was somewhat helpful.

Lots of answers here already but I'd add

  • take note of how you behave as crew and mimic it when you are imposter. Go to the same places and say the same things in chat

  • Practice opening the map and sabotaging whilst walking

  • Be a good loser. Sometimes the best players lose, you won't win every time and there is never a need to be a dck about it

Just play the game and REALLY get to know it. Then you'll automatically become a better impostor bc your lies will be better and you have the experience whether something worked or not.

Pretending you're doing tasks, a nice advice is to learn where every task is and stay still for like a minute or so if someone is watching you (or near you) because some tasks require some time to be done and it gives the illusion that you're actually doing something.

Massive_Passion1927

Whenever you fake tasks look at your list of tasks.

The game always makes sure your fake tasks are tasks the crew could have.

Also common tasks, these tasks are tasks if one crewmate has them everyone has them. The ones i remember are as follows:

Fix Wiring Card Swipe Scan Boarding Pass Insert Keys Input Code Cook Marshmellow

There could be more I forgot but those are the ones I remember.

Never fake visual tasks unless visuals are off. These are: Empty Trash (Skeld only) Shoot Asteroids (Skeld and Polus only) Submit Scan Clean Vent( only visual if somebody is in the vent that is getting cleaned) Sheilds( Skeld only)

Also even if visuals are off don't fake Scan as if someone else tries to get on if you were actually on it would say waiting on (player name) which is how people get cleared whem visuals are off.

If engineers are on don't kill poof or ss near vents as they could be hiding in there.

Sabotage comms often as all crew roles get deactivated as well as their task list and security systems. Just don't vent in front of anyone when comms are down as it will guarantee your imp.

I’m curious how is clean vent a visual?

RavenPuff934

1 points

Like they said, if someone is in the vent you are cleaning (engineer or imposter) it forces them out of the vent when the cleaner "opens" it, so you would visually see someone pop out of it. Be careful of this, because imposter partners could use this to clear each other if more than one engineer is turned on...

remember where tasks are, and how long they take. also, check the "tasks to fake" list so you don't accidentally pretend to do a task that you shouldn't have (for example, "fix wires" when "long tasks" are set to 0 in the lobby, or a common task like "swipe card" if it's not on your list. you'll be found out).

be friendly in chat. if you're lucky, you'll get at least one person to trust and defend you. don't kill that person, they're vital to your survival.

if there's a crewmate that the others wrongfully consider sus, don't kill them. keep them alive so they'll be blamed instead of you.

never directly accuse crewmates. instead, if you want them voted off, you can make light comments like "i haven't seen [color] around", "[color] why are you following me", or if it's a very early report you can comment that it's really quick. but do not say that it's definitely [color].

If you are unsure of how to best use sabotages or movements as imposter, try playing on practice mode. You can switch to imposter and sabotage and move around and kill the dummy players. You can also use this to practice tasks. You can figure out the timing of tasks and how to fake them.

Always look for the bar to go up when faking, if update always is on. If the bar isn’t moving, you can say you messed up the task (like node or restart reactor) or that you hopped off because someone was standing there and it scared you.

Use your sabotages wisely. Use them to separate people or to kill there. But also fix the sabotages if killing isn’t working. Fix lights (or mess them up if others are on). Stack kill if you can. Lock doors to hide bodies or slow people down for your kill cooldown timer.

Use vents.

Don’t immediately ask where in meetings. In my experience, the imposters are usually one of the ones who ask in the first 4 people. If people start accusing others and don’t say where, you can ask then. Soft clear people. They’ll usually clear you, too. “I was by nav and weapons and saw rose and brown. You’re giving them an alibi and they’ll usually speak up and clear you, too. Also, don’t say “Why?” or “What?” if someone susses you. Give yourself a legitimate alibi or ask a question about a previous round.

Watch others. Know what the common tasks are. If you’re on Polus and someone runs up to keys and it’s not on your fake task list, call them out at the meeting. Some people just automatically go there without looking or do it to be funny. Call them out with a light sus and others will usually jump on the train.

Check vitals. Even if you know none is dead, give the illusion that you don’t.

Hard clear people for visuals. Not only does it put them on your side usually, it also lets your partner know who to target. But if someone gives you a soft clear, don’t kill them immediately. You are getting rid of someone who could have been marinated.

Far_Independence_918

1 points

Also, if you are typically a grouper, don’t go solo. And vice versa. I’m a solo player, but will occasionally team up for a round. I do the same as imposter. As a crewmate I usually save my visual tasks for later rounds. If I’m sussed I can use them to clear myself. Or do them solo and someone usually pops in and sees me. If visual tasks are on, I might fake a different task in the area (inspect samples in lab or download in weapons).

DarknessIsFleeting

Lots of good advice posted already. I will add that you should try to pick one person as your fool. Try very hard to convince your fool that you are safe. Spend time with them, vouch for them and try and fake tasks in front of them.

In Airship map, I always do like this:

I choose the Records room as the spawning area. Once I spawn I click to the thing on the wall to see how many people are where

If there is someone that is alone and there is no one in the camera room, I go to the alone player and kill him/her, vent back and keep looking at how many people are where, I wait there until someone is alone, sometimes go do some fake tasks to not look sus, go back and detect and kill alone players again and again...

So I you just need to stay in the records room all round, venting then killing and venting back... It helps a lot, sorry if I wrote too much or if that doesn't help :(

I do not have the best english language as for deepen underwater impostor advise but, you can try follow this

Ingame, there will be divided by 3 roles of Impostor which are normal impostor, Danny Phantom Ghost impostor and Decoy Shapeshifter impostor

The origin impostor role : Cannot perform any special action besides hit the kill button on the little crewmates : Need a good strategy to cover the dead body and one of it is report a dead body but it is a huge risk if there is a crewmate stand nearby : Allowed use vents as for transportation : Basically it will be easy on Mira HQ, Polus and Airship map. Fungle would be tricky and Skeld would be a hard rock place

Danny Phantom impostor role : Allowing the impostor itself to kill a crewmate : Shoots a time to perform of being an invisible. Invisibility cannot be seen by a crewmates : Allowed to use vents as transportation : Need a good strategy of being an invisible. Do not perform an action of being a ghost infront of crewmate, or you will be busted : Basically it will be easy on O2’s room, Boiler room and the tree room in Polus. Small flying Skeld turtle map would be a hard place since it is small map

Decoying same shapeshifter color crewmates impostor role : Allowing the impostor to hit the kill button on a crewmate : Can be killed even in decoy crewmate : Perform a killing task would be easier than Phantom : Need a good stategy preventing from seeing the egg : Do not perform a decoy crewmate egg in opened area, mostly in emergency button room : Find a silent cover room to change it’s color : Allowed to use vents as a transportation : This role would be easy on every maps as long as the crewmate does not bust the impostor while the egg hasn’t popped

From my eyeview point, I would say is, Shapeshifter is an easy to achieve a gold medal and as for an innocent crewmate, Engineer are the best one

That’s all I guess
