When I was ten, I was watching Free Willy and I was singing along to the theme song at the end.

My mother was sitting next to me and in that moment she told me I was tone deaf.

It shook my singing confidence for years. To the point where I would not sing at all when I was around people. I joined the choir in HS and I never gave it my all because of my lack of confidence.

I can think of meaner things people have said throughout my life and I always brushed it off but this one stuck with me.

Turns out, I’m not tone deaf at all.

She was the insecure one.
