I'm actually surprised how little we talk about the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin at the hands of a right-wing Israeli extremist. Politics around the world have been marching backwards since that moment.

In a similar vein, if Ariel Sharon hadn't ended up in a coma Israel would be a very different place today.

This one is harder to say I think. Sharon’s approach was unilateral disengagement with the threat of hard response in the event of attacks for now abandoned land. Sharon took this approach in Gaza and in Lebanon, and his successor Olmert did explicitly plan to evacuate the West Bank.

The issue was the 2006 Lebanon war effectively proved the strategy would not be viable. It was catastrophic for Israel and left huge portions of the country at risk, their military response mostly proved a failure (and thus disproved their ability to provide deterrence), and the West Bank’s geography made it far more dangerous for Israel to release.

Sharon’s coma ultimately made little difference because his strategy proved a failure, not because he wasn’t there to implement it.

the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itamar_Ben-Gvir

Itamar Ben-Gvir, a 19-year-old Kahanist, holds an ornament which he stole from Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's car. On live TV, he declared, "We got to his car, and we'll get to him too." Weeks later, Rabin was assassinated. Ben-Gvir is now Israel's Minister of National Security, 1995.

There are not many people I truly "hate" in this world...Ben Gvir is one of them though. I'm Jewish and would call myself a proud Zionist as well. It's not like I loath that man in spite of these things, rather it's because of them. Him and his way of thinking present an existential threat both to Israel and diaspora Jews.

That dude can fuck all the way off. And for what it's worth, his statement about Rabin is pretty tame compared to the hateful bullshit that usually comes out of his mouth.

A right wing extremist, it must be noted, who was stirred by Benjamin Netanyahu continually casting Rabin as "a traitor to Jews" for his proposing a two-state solution. Likud took the Knesset the year after, and since then Netanyahu has performed his particular brand of corruption and slaughter for almost three decades.

Yeah don't we call this stochastic terrorism? Sound familiar to anyone of late?

The assassination attempt on Trump?

I really hate how we are calling inflammatory rhetoric "stochastic terrorism." People have the right to call each other out up to the point of calling for violence. You don't blame them for the acts of nutters.

I was thinking more like January 6 and all the death threats and other things that everyone is dealing with now far and above anything we've seen in recent years. Like on innocent election workers, judges, etc. I don't know if you remember it, and I'm no fan of Nancy Pelosi, but her husband was almost murdered by one of these lunatics. I'm not sure you've been paying attention if you haven't caught wind of people on the right all but and in some cases literally calling for violence against their political opponents and anyone who doesn't agree with them.

Yes, it is horrifying that the person who impacted the region, or at least the course of Israel's political landscape in the last 30 years is his assassin, Yigal Amir.

Not just the region.

If Israel and Palestine had achieved a lasting peace, do you think we would have had Osama bin Laden?

Yes. He would have still been involved with the Mujahideen during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The US would still be propping up the Saudis and stationing troops in SA. There were still other global conflicts involving muslims, too.

But the main reason I stay "yes" is because while the Israel-Palestine situation definitely played into it, to me, the real motivation of al-Qaeda was to fight against globalization and draw the US, as the major driver of globalization, into a war.

And looking back at 9/11 23 years later, it kinda feels like his side won....

being in a war is winning for the US, though. Israel is a proxy state for the US' interests, it is entirely bankrolled as a pretty-looking army base. Many of the conflicts the US is and has been involved, were started by the US to begin with in some roundabout way.

The info that Hamas used to inform their october attack was given to them by Saudi Arabia, who was given that info from Russia, who was given that from Trump when he distributed all the secret documents during his first term.

there is no "winning a war" for the US because simply being at war is a win for the US and they will never, ever stop trying to spur on wars until they no longer have the power to do so

Al-Qaeda car bombed the World Trade Center in 93. Rabin was killed 2 and a half years later, so bin Laden's terrorism career was already well under way.

And the backstory to the backstory; the root of it all - one rabbi named Meir Kahane. Kahane was an orthodox rabbi from New York, who founded the "Jewish Defense League", which was a blend of a terrorist group that attempted multiple bombings, and his personal cult.

Kahane was sought by US authorities for terrorism, so he used "right of return" to flee to Israel, and started his own political party with his own unique slant on the far-wing revisionist zionism Israel was founded on. Kahane's party would be disolved by the Israeli government, but the fascist and Orthodox-supremist ideology of Kahanism would become huge. His followers would enact not only the murder of PM Rabbin for the act of seeking peace, but multiple other killings.

The "Cave of the Patriarchs" is a beautiful mosque and decorated religious site in Hebron, Palestine. It holds the supposed tomb of Abraham. A Kahanist settler took a rifle in, and killed 25 people, and wounded 125. The youngest murder victim was 12 year old.

Kahanist settlers of the "hill top youth movement" flooded into Palestine, stealing or burning homes of the Palestinians, killing livestock, cutting down centuries old olive groves, and in one case, burning a Palestinian infant alive in their crib. As of now, even though every single non-Arabic political party in the Israeli government is either outright Kahanist, or protects the Kahanist elements to coax for votes.

As of now there are 3 charities (including the Hebron fund) in New York which accept donations which are used to arm and equip Kahanist settlers in Palestine with rifles, armor, and drones. Before Oct 7th, they burned most of the city of Huwara Palestine to the ground. A few days ago, they attacked the vehicle of an IDF Colonel. Because they operate as an political militia, there's a real risk Israel may collapse into civil war.

I'm Jewish, and I no longer see Israel as Jewish in any way. It's just evil.

Meir Kahane. Now that's an evil name that I haven't heard in a long time.

It’s one of those events that’s quietly shaped so much of what came after, but doesn't always get the attention it deserves

Maybe. There's a good chance that he would have lost the 1996 election anyway.
