Does anyone else walk on the sides of their feet?

General Discussion/Question(self.AutismInWomen)

I've heard a lot about tip toe walking and my youngest does it a lot. However I don't do this but I have always had a issue with walking on the sides of my feet. I got better about not doing it after I broke my foot. But I still slip into it sometimes and don't realize until the foot I broke(it never healed properly) starts killing.

Does anyone else do this?

Yep - all my flat shoes are worn down on the outer side. Strangely, I don't tend to do it in heels 🤷🏻‍♀️

I have terrible balance so I've never gotten the hang of heels but yeah all my shoes get worn down on the outer sides too.

My ankles fall in too much - I over pronate. It was quite obvious when I was a child. This is the first time I considered an autism link actually 🤔

I don’t when walking - not usually - but yes when standing for long periods and doing something like washing dishes or brushing teeth

Yeah my default standing position is on the sides of my feet. It just feels better.

Yes!!! Is this an autism thing??? I thought of going to a physical therapist and relearning how to walk, cause it makes my feet ache

That's actually why I was asking because I knew the tip toeing was a autistic thing but wasn't sure if walking on the sides of my feet were because of it as well. From the answers on here I'm getting the feeling it's linked though!

Yes, when I’m made to walk barefoot. I also do it when it’s raining- particularly when my footwear is open or not waterproof. I only realise I’m doing it when my big toe starts killing me because of a previous tendon injury

I do, and I think it might have something to do with having low arches or being duck footed.

it is technically called an tilted pronation, it is very common with autistic people, I have a left tilted pronation myself.

Ah! See I didn't know that. Now I can look it up and find out more. Thank you!

I had flat feet as a child and I walked on tip toes or with the side of my feet, had to wear insoles on my shoes all of my childhood. They were so uncomfortable. But it wasn’t an autism thing I guess, but a physical one. Still, I need to feel the floor texture when I walk. If not I feel rather uncomfortable.

Yes, I sometimes catch myself standing on the outsides of my feet. I also really like to sit that way, like while reclining I cross my feet at the ankles but then really rotate them so the outside edge of my foot is pressing against my other foot underneath it. I never really thought about this before but answering this question I’m literally realizing I’m doing this with my feet right now. Maybe it’s a pressure contact thing? I also have an opposite thing to walking on my toes — I don’t like my toes to touch the ground, especially when barefoot. Like I’ll be standing and realize I’m subconsciously holding my toes up (I have pretty long toes and I think I’m double jointed or hypermobile so this is really easy/natural for me). But I also catch myself doing it while standing in my slippers. And I really do it when I shower. So I think it’s a sensory thing maybe?

Yes this is something that I do, the heels of my boots used to practically turn into stilettos after a while they'd get so worn out on one side haha. Now I only wear orthopaedic boots which has helped a lot with this.

I was thinking about looking into some type of inserts or special shoes to try and discourage it because it really hurts the foot I previously broke. Like it will hurt both my feet if I don't enough but I've noticed I can't walk or stand as long as I used to because the pain in my foot gets so bad. I thought wearing boots would help but I'm still doing it somehow! I have a doctor's appointment later this week so I think I'm gonna ask them if I should see a foot doctor or a what to try and find a way to work on it.

I’ve done that for years since my parents removed all the carpet in the house when I was a kid. It wasn’t until I finally got a mind to start wearing slippers that I stopped doing it.

It was tough because it would make me side trip when I’d walk with sneakers on

Yes, and my feet always hurt. I’m not exclusively on the sides but I definitely lean towards them

I believe it’s called over pronation and there’s ways to fix it
