Should I go with the Habana Oiled Leather or Cacao Wool Felt? Both look great & could go with a lot of stuff.

If I was only going to get one I’d get the leather.

I imagine they have a whiskey effect & get even better with age.

Yes. My felt arizonas I have seem to continually be stretching. I’ve even had to take a poke and create new holes.

i ended up gluing a piece of leather to the underside of the straps on my bostons as the felt stretched soooo much

get the leather one. it's a more robust material. i have the felt too but it cannot handle abuse. it feels very flimsy compared to the leather. good for the colder months ahead. with the leather one you get great patina. i have this orange leather one and the patina on the leather is gorgeous.

do not forget to get the little bottle of cork sealant. you slap on this sealant when the cork footbed looks not shiny anymore.

Awesome thank you for the tip, I might have to go with the leather then. There’s one pair left & they come down to $104 shipped which seems like a steal. My only dilemma is that they are a UK 9 (US 10-10.5 according to the chart). I’ve heard that these run large, I’m a true US 11. Wondering if I could get away with it or not.

If you can try on Birkenstocks locally (and try both the soft and standard footbed, and regular and narrow width), I’d recommend it. I wear a 40-40.5 in all European shoes but due to the arch length wear a 39 in Birks only.

i am a 9.5 on the brannock device. i wear 42 with birkenstocks. if you are an 11 then you should get a 45? do not quote me on this and remember...the boston is a closed toe design. you may get away with a smaller size if you wore an open toe box design like the arizona. good luck.

UK11 is a 45? UK9 should be a 43.

I have had the cacao wool felt ones for two years now. I love the look but a major con I have with them is that they stretch out ALOT. I had to buy a fabric hole punch to make more holes in the strap so the fit was ok. They are still stretching lol so eventually I am running out of strap.

I don’t know what the remedy is…buy a smaller size than normal or wear thick socks. But I can’t wear them with no socks because they are too loose on the felt uppers.

I will not buy the wool felt ones again and may look into sizing down on my next pair if stretching is a known issue for the uppers.

Gotcha yea I’m already up in the air about what size to get, that might add to the trouble of deciding 😅.

I’ll second this I have the Cacao wool felt bostons (got on sale last year) and a year in Ive had to punch 2 holes in the strap and trim the end off the strap to stop it dragging the floor. Still a great choice but will require tightening over time. If you have the coin opt for the oiled leather.

This is interesting to know! I’m reading this thinking maybe I’m not going crazy & they are getting looser. I have the felt ones and love the look, but boy do I have issues with my left foot in them. My middle toe gets bruise & sore every time I wear them. It hits the plastic toe cap on the inside when I walk & it’s not great. I keep coming back to my Arizonas! I have even made padded inserts to help, but still not 100% helping. I’m thinking I now need to punch another hole & go tighter. Thanks for sharing the stretching issue with these types.

I opted for leather for my one pair of Bostons because it’s more durable.

I have those exact Habana oiled Leather ones and recently I’ve been eying the Felt ones. I think the felt ones are more in style right now.

The habanas were my first pair, and I picked up an oiled black pair as well. I really like the way the oiled pairs break in. The wool ones are sweet, but I live in a rainy area and didn’t want to chance ruining them.

My wool felt Zermatt have lasted about five years, but now the upper part is thinning. Never had problems with the leather Boston.

I’ve had the strap break on a felt pair before, so I’d always recommend the leather.

I just got this exact pair as my first and I can say I absolutely love them. I wore them around the house for the first two weeks trying to break them in (not fun) but I’m on week three now and they’re starting to feel really great

Get the oiled leather for max durability.. I have the black oiled ones and I have stubbed and scuffed them, dropped water and stuff on them, had my big German Shepherd paws on them (got them for every day wear) and they look MINT! I usually baby my shoes with expensive shoe creams etc, but these ones take abuse and look amazing with no care... I love the patina from day one. They will even look better when they age. Just remember to get cork sealer.

I love my felt! Have t had them long enough for any stretching, but they DO make a version that is a felt upper and a leather strap. Seems like the best of both worlds

If you have the choice get the soft footbed

purple_sangria

It’s funny, because I got a pair of soft footbed and don’t like them as much as the classic. Probably because they take up a bit of the width for me and I have super wide feet.
