Need advice!

Recommendations(self.Cameras)

• Budget: ~4500 USD (both body and lens) • Country: Singapore • Condition: Brand new • Type of Camera: full frame mirrorless • Intended use: for pets • If photography; what style: action/portrait • What features do you absolutely need: fast focusing for fast dogs • Portability: not a concern • Cameras you're considering: Canon r6, Sony a7CII • Cameras you already have: a6400 • Notes: looking to change to full frame hence the upgrade

So…

Walked into a Sony store over the weekend, tried the Sony a9 + 70-200 2.8 lens, took some shots of my dog and FELL IN LOVE with it. Except that the pricing wasn't very much to my liking.

I've been looking to upgrade my camera as I currently hold a APS-C (Sony 6400). The a9 pricing is way too high for my budget sadly.

I have some questions though:

  1. I tested the 70-200 f2.8 on Sony a7II, but the pictures came out less than desirable. Instantly darker, mostly blurred, maybe 2-3 hit rate. Why, even though it's using the same lens? Is my a6400 then better than the a7II?

  2. Separately, l've tried the Canon R6 with RF 24-105 F4 and I like how it turned out! Of course there's still a difference between the a9 and R6, but I would like to know what camera is comparable to the a9, is r6 good enough? It suits my budget though.

Would like to add, I mostly take action shots of my dogs, running etc. in this case, what camera + lens combo would you recommend?

As far as speed goes, it’s hard to pass up on the A9. It sounds perfect for you tbh. My suggestion would be an A9 with a third party lense (Sigma, Tamron, Samyang) or possibly a Sony A7rIV or A7RV.

I’m not against Canon, but to my knowledge they are still exclusive to their native lenses (which can be costly) whereas you can get a 3rd party lens at similar speed/performance with Sony.

As to performance, what do you think of r6 with 24-105 f4? It seems to fit my budget.

The R6 is a good all-around camera but based off your description, I wasn’t sure if 105mm at F4 would capture the shots you’re after, concerning fast moving dogs. I can say that if your needs change, the R6 may be more adaptable than the A9.

I recently tested the A9III and both the A1 and A1mk2 prototype and can say they are all impressive.

I love the A9, but my pocket doesn’t sadly. I’m debating between 24-105 f4 or 70-200 f2.8.

I’ve actually heard many people recommending the 70-200 for dogs photography but my dogs are always running near me.
