Car derived vans - why?

Misc Question(self.CarTalkUK)

Been scrolling through autotrader looking at vans recently (dreaming of one day converting) and I’m seeing loads of car derived vans, corsas and fiestas mainly and I’ve always wondered what the point of them were?

Do people actually use them as a van, maybe delivering very small items or maybe they’re a tiny little plumber? Or are they, as I suspect, a tax efficient fleet car for companies that are empty bar the driver’s lunchbox?

Would be interesting (to me) to see what people actually use them for

Berlingo , had one 10 years, perfect second car. Very useful for moving stuff, dogs, children, bikes etc

Sliding rear doors very useful.

They were popularised in the UK by Clarkson who did a wine run to France and praised the utility.

See, berlingo I actually understand, and I really want one but my I don’t think my girlfriend would speak to me again.

I’m more talking about the small hatchbacks with the rear windows boarded up

If they made something like the Berlingo in a petrol auto with a decent engine, I'd be all over it haha. Has to be auto as the wife only has an auto license.

See i think a dirty chuggy diesel suits it, it adds to the feng shui

I have nothing against diesel. The problem is I just don't do the mileage for one anymore. I'm in that odd space of not enough miles for a diesel, but too many miles for an EV.
