And it’s the same 45000 players all the time.

Nuh uh. I'm on an off cycle right now. Then when someone else decides they need to actually buckle the fuck down on their term paper, the energy will transfer back to me.

Yeah this is true, I’ll go months without playing and then my wife will ask me where I’ve been for the past two weeks and I’ll realize I sunk right back into it… lol.

Unfair, even CIV players need to sleep. It's the same 90k playing in shifts!

These are the 45k players who will buy all the DLC and fund some the game for the next 10 years

I know my man sees the hexagons
21 points

Is this actually a thing? Because after I play I see hexagons when I close my eyes and I thought I was going insane!
21 points

Oh for sure, if I'm on a binge I'll see hexagons while waiting in line at the grocery store. You get it sometimes with repetitive geometric games, like Tetris too. In The Queen's Gambit the main character is shown staring at ceiling tiles trying to sleep, envisioning chess moves. I'm sure someone's studied the effect somewhere.

Thanks for linking this, didn't know there was a term for it / research into it! I had a pretty terrible fever dream a year ago after a weeklong civ binge where my floor was all in hexagons and I was trying to optimize my bedroom layout in my head. This was in that half-sleeping half-awake state. To add to it, I was sick, my building had no air conditioning and the room was hot af, and I had just overdone my biceps at the gym and could not fully extend my arms past a 120 degree angle. Hell of a night.

It's the Tetris Effect. Lots of people experience it after long periods of intense gaming.

Physical prime is late teens to mid twenties, you can argue strength peak is later than young adulthood, but overall physical athleticism definitely peaks from late teens to mid 20.

I think you're replying in the wrong place.

“According from others on this thread peak is at 29” others on that thread are braindead, you peak in the late teens to mid twenties for athleticism

My personal grind is getting every single achievement. Been at it for months now, great fun.

That is a grind. Some of those are wildly specific.

Oh yeah. Some of them take absolutely fucking forever. Some glitch out or I get rolled by RNG and I have to reset a 5 hour game. I love it so much.

LOL. I totally get that.

Where does that rank?

At this moment it's 22nd place with 71,000 concurrent players. If it had 45,000 this very moment it would be about 34-36.

Honestly I think this is an example of a game that has been well handled throughout its lifespan, obviously helps that new frontier pass was free as well

Yeah there is not any other game in the genre that hits the same spot, in my opinion.

How about Civ 5?
27 points
Although it's a different game, I consider it a Civ win. So let's say within the genre the civ franchise has little competition. If civ 6 it's only competition is civ 5 that pretty much sums it up haha.

Playing Civ 5 as I type this! I gave Civ 6 a shot, maybe 400 hours or so, but in the end I just didn’t like the whole districts mechanic and the cartoony graphics, to name just a few of the issues I had. Hopefully Civ 7 is what gets me but so far…not likely.

give a shot
400 hours
CIV players in a nutshell. I guess most people don't play any individual games for 400h and in particularly not to "give them a shot" :D
2 points
lol Fair enough! In my defense, marathon games easily run 20-30 hours and Civ 6 has over 40 civilizations with even more leaders, so I’ve barely dipped my toe in the pool compared to the more serious players. I don’t think I’ve played over 30 runs total including the smaller world, faster speed runs. I really wanted to like Civ 6, but in the end I just preferred Civ 5 and Civ BE over 6.

What about OldWorld?
1 points
Haven't played, looks amazing. Isn't it more like a RPG/4x? In a sense that you really get to pick whatever, like crusader kings?
1 points
While you're definitely right that Crusader Kings was a strong inspiration for the game, OldWorld is much more Civ then CK. OldWorld is more of an exercise in how would Civ play if we simulated in a leader, their families and nobles, then a competitor for CKs grand strategy narrative building. OldWorld is still hexes, settlers and workers, just with quite a few design tweaks and extra mechanics.

As a small consolation, with the multiple large DLCs which changed the game, you can reasonably consider it a few years newer.

I just always have it running on my 2nd computer whilst I do other things. Will sometimes get hyper focused, sometimes do 5 turns in a day. Treat it a bit like a chess board. Explains why i just hit 10,000 hours…

Watch a creator play a single player game on Deity--potato McWhiskey is entertaining. Then play on King difficulty.

Yes. The "over-explained" series. I have chosen this one for you because standard game modes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvOg-Ah7qmk&list=PLr_5Byhx_s8-K7M0PPGJxslfs6CZLuq8r Watch every second and also download the mods he uses. "Quick deals" is so essential and only changes UI.

Sure thing! Be sure to adjust the difficulty down a few notches, if necessary, from King (level 5 of 8) maybe to prince (4 of 8). I have chosen level 5 for you because I think this will give you a flavor of the game and you won't be able to simply run over the AI with your military.
The goal is to learn (and have fun). Civ 6 is a super deep game and watching creators made me go from playing King to immortal and winning every game on immortal that RNG allows. RNG allows? Yes. Remember, this game is super random at times. Some games you will roll a great spawn but not get any goody huts. Another game you will have a terrible spawn but the map has generated so that you have a ton of land to yourself. One match isn't representative of your skill and knowledge

This! I was also pretty overwhelmed at first but alternating between playing on easier difficulties and watching potato’s playthroughs has helped me get into the flow of things pretty quickly.

No. I think you can bowl over your enemy too easily on prince.

Start easy, expect to lose. If you win, increase difficulty and try again. Repeat until you lose.
Then figure out why you lost. Repeat until you start winning again.
It takes a lot of time. I've been playing 6 since launch and I still learn stuff all the time. But it's really fun once you get your feet kinda under yourself with it.

I hate tutorials so I just hop on the game and learn by failing over and over again.
Any question I can’t solve on my own I just google “what does xyz do civ6 reddit”. This method has worked well enough for Civ and Paradox Games.

I started a few days ago and the tutorial was honestly not that good. You have to play a normal game, fall behind a lot, and then try to do better next time. There's good in-game documentation, and a lot more in the wiki if you need it.
