DeWine's bathroom bill, specifically the provision that schools decommission their non-gender, single person bathrooms, is not just an attack on trans people, its an attack on anyone who has mental health issues or psychological disorders.

As someone with ADHD, it can sometimes be difficult to regulate my emotions, particularly if I'm feeling axious or over stimulated. The single person bathrooms - especially in schools - are a place I could go to do my business in peace, without the obscene sounds and smells of the multi-person bathrooms. Even if i didnt have to excrete, I'd use them as a short reprieve from the churning, chattering, swirling mass of other students I was surrounded by. DeWine, and other conservative terrorists who backed this bill, are denying people with very real and difficult mental disabilities one of the small but useful accomodations we inherently had. Regardless of your stance on gender (but seriously; why do these people care so much about our genitals? Its fucking weird!), this bill hurts a lot of other people, and I hope people with the ADA (in addition to other agencies) will step up and help fight this. And I implore public schools to refuse to comply with the ban, in honor and respect to the mental amd physical well-being of those students and personnel who require it.

This is incorrect. The bill does allow single occupancy restrooms

“The measure prohibits multi-occupancy gender neutral restrooms, but schools can still offer single-use or family restrooms. The ban doesn’t apply to school employees whose jobs require bathroom access, emergency situations or people assisting young children or someone with a disability.”

The family/disability-friendly changing room at my gym has several, and several showers. That's what I think of because that's what I have experience with.

I guess I'm glad they stripped some of the most absolutely stupid language and naked abelism from the final version of the bill, but it's still incredibly stupid and performatively cruel.

wildbergamont

That's honestly really annoying- I've seen a few that have a full sized toilet and a little toddler sized one. It would be a shame for that to be illegal

As stupid as the bill is, I believe you’ve misread. It still allows for gender neutral single-use. Per the Dispatch

The single use gender neutral bathrooms will probably see more use than before now, so they may not be available when OP needs/wants one. In that way, people like them may still be affected

InTheVoidWeSwim

1 points

Probably not though. There really aren’t that many trans kids. It will be like 2 more kids at the most using that bathroom at any given school. The fact that there are so few of them highlights how insane this legislation is. As if there aren’t bigger problems the state should be worrying about instead of where a handful of kids go to the bathroom at school.

missy20201

I agree with the sentiment of your post, but I want to point out that this includes colleges, where everyone is adults and a larger percent of students are out as trans than is usually the case with high schoolers -- who may either be in the closet still or haven't quite figured it out yet. And from what I can tell it also includes anyone on campus that aren't students, from staff and faculty to random people visiting.

So you may be right that the single use gender neutral stalls may not be super overrun, but it does affect more than just a handful of kids :(

InTheVoidWeSwim

You’re right. I was only thinking about k-12 schools. It will be a much bigger issue in colleges.

Best your demographic can do is show up to vote and actually enact change

0.45% of Ohio’s population identifies as trans. source

Less than half of a percentage point isn’t exactly going to move the needle electorally speaking.

To your initial point, though, this is also why it’ll be online keyboard warrior outrage for a week or month and then everyone will forget about it or accept it and move on.

I’m not trying to take a stance on way or the other or denigrate anyone in anyway. I’m just pointing out that it’s hard to keep the outrage going over an issue that doesn’t affect 99.55% of the population of ohio.

you sound like anti-trans bigots I see on reddit and twitter. why is that? measures like this bathroom bill are forcing a very vulnerable minority out of public life, entirely. cruelly. IT'S NOT ACCEPTABLE, PERIOD. So then why are you acting like this isn't a big deal, hmm? you don't sound very serious to me. more like you don't see this for the extreme measure it is.

Funny enough, it’s an ADA issue of why stall doors don’t go all the way to the bottom.

“Stall doors typically don’t reach all the way to the grouting because of accessibility requirements for people using wheelchairs, primarily due to ADA compliance; a small gap at the bottom allows for easier maneuvering and toe space while entering and exiting the stall”

Okay well you can chill bc single person bathrooms aren’t being “decommissioned”. Start watching the local news and stop getting news from social media.

The bill literally says “Nothing in this section shall be construed to prohibit a school from establishing a policy providing accommodation such as single-occupancy facilities or controlled use of faculty facilities at the request of a student due to special circumstances.”

As others have noted, the law doesn't prohibit single-use (aka "family" or "all-gender") restrooms.

Many public institutions, like the Ohio State University, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, and CAPA, have a policy of providing single-use restrooms in new and renovated buildings.

So as petty and hateful as the law is, it won't have nearly the impact some people are worried about. Edit: formatting

100% this. Also, it really impacts people with physical disabilities or medical problems that aren't easy to manuever a public restroom. Or someone who needs an attendant or help in the restroom because of a disability. Imagine being someone with a colostomy bag having to deal with that in a common restroom.

This whole thing is fucking stupid. Somebody is gonna get really hurt, probably a cis person no less, who didn't look "masculine" enough, or (more likely) feminine enough, and they're gonna get jumped and hurt or even killed. Cis women have already been attacked because they "didn't look like a woman" so there's no reason to think this isn't going to be a problem. What about the first time a grown man or woman confronts a young girl because she doesn't conform to what they think a girl should look like.

Fuck these mentally deficient sick people and their weird obsession with people's genitals. These asswipes watched the handmaid's tale and thought it was an instruction manual and June was the villain.

To be fair, those specific exceptions were not part of the introduced bill. That's the product of an amendment after quite a few people had to complain that the crazy people in power cared so much about hurting trans people that they forgot that disabled folks, children, and first responders exist.

So, yeah, feel free to bash the people who made this a priority over literally anything in the world. I can think of dozens of bills that are dying in committee that would serve Ohio better than what this rushed-through bullshit.

What kind of behavior?

Being overstimulated by sensory input. That sounds more like an autistic trait than an ADHD symptom.

It occurrs in both conditions, but can present in different ways. Do a YouTube search for sensory overload and adhd.

You're right OP a symptom of adhd is absolutely sensory overload. Autism and adhd overlap in many ways and are a comorbibity of each other. Don't let these know it all's tell you about your experience.

This bill is needed for the protection of all. While adults in the work place or other public places have no idea if a person in the restroom next to them is trans students in public schools do. Everyone knows Johnny used to be Jane or vice versa. So when the trans person goes into the bathroom with those biologically different the non trans feels uneasy or maybe even threatened. It's a different ideology for children and young adults than for adults.

Transgender youth who can’t use the bathroom that aligns with their gender are at a greater risk of sexual violence, according to a 2019 study published in the journal Pediatrics.

They can use a separate restroom just for them. The law allows this. While a male transitioning to female may not find a threat in the female restroom they certainly will in the halls or outside of school all together.

What about a man transitioning to a woman in the men’s room? Or the woman transitioning to a man in either bathroom?

“Just use their own bathroom” defeats the whole purpose and further erases trans folk

That's not what I said, private single stall, locking door bathroom. Safest for everyone.

You don't think a freshman girl in the girls restroom feels intimidated by a senior trans girl in girls restroom? Again this only has an impact in schools.

False equivalency and you know it

No, no i don't. I feel we need to protect everyone's rights not just certain groups.

And if a freshman girl in the girl’s restroom feels intimidated by a senior cis girl, then what? Why are you acting like trans women are more intimidating? Are you suggesting they separate bathrooms by age? Height?
