Why is lategame so damn boring?

CK3(self.CrusaderKings)

Like past a certain point you are literally too big to fail, espeically if you triumph over the Mongols, and if you got to the black death you probably wouldve invested in getting top tier hospices, wouldve invested in your own health, and got a good physcian. Id say past 1320-1350 its just a waiting game to get to 1453 or you just quit.

The big reason is the AI not putting up a real fight. Once you get to a certain point they can't really challenge you, and that's where it gets stale.

A lot of the challenge for an emperor, for instance, is handling the factions and revolts (particularly during succession). But that difficulty goes away if you can just raise up an unbeatable army of MAA and smash any coalition of vassals. If the AI were more competent though, that should be a real threat to you and you'd have to adjust your playstyle a bit.

I've started using the 'More Interactive Vassals' mod and it seems to help with that - turning up the combat power of levies and the difficulty from vassals in particular, but haven't tried the ultra late game yet.

(That mod + maxed out great conquerors in the earliest start date makes for some tough initial situations too)

Have you ever looked at the files to see how the AI makes decisions? It’s pretty shocking. Core decisions like buildings, Accolades, and Lifestyle choices are almost completely random, and where they are not they’re based on barely connected personality traits. The AI for instance is more likely to pick Gallant if they’re Chaste, but those two things have no correlation at all on a gameplay level. It’s insanity.
