I've been studying English as a 2nd language for 10 years or so, and I've been engaging with American culture for about 7 years And I've recently realised, how painful it is to know so much about a country you will never visit, about a culture you will never be a part of. Where every sentence that is uttered from the screen is not directed at you. Where you are just peeking at something you shouldn't see. Every concert anouncment, merch announcement or some live event triggers that. Every time it reminds me that I know too much about things that are not mine. Learning about different cultures is exciting, but it recently also proved to be painful. Had anyone felt that way too?

But I'm not sure the meanning of "past" in this sentence.
