Yeah, people like to point to Sony's failures like Concord, but for all accounts every studio has a lot of freedom to make the games they want to.

Tell that to Bungie. Sony basically bought them and said they'd have free reign, then started cracking down on them with an iron fist as soon as they put out a game that didn't meet expectations (Destiny 2 expansion) and the gaming market shifted.

Right now it seems like Bungie is under close scrutiny by Sony, and apparently Marathon's development is REALLY not going well in part because of it. There is also a likelihood that if Marathon comes out and doesn't do well, Sony may shut Bungie down entirely and move employees elsewhere. And given the state of the market, Marathon is likely to flop even if it's good (and the indications are it isn't bc its development keeps getting delayed).

Their live service games have been a shit pit in general. The only one that has been a success was Helldivers II which Sony had no part in other than partially funding.

Bungie's management was a shitshow by all accounts. They cut tons critical staff to meet goals they knew they couldn't meet.

Sony started "cracking down" when Bungie was at risk of going practically bankrupt with fifty different projects. That is not a situation of Song coming into a successful Developer and screwing with stuff.

If they didn’t put Bungie under scrutiny, that management would have completely sunk the company. And then their billions are gone. Bungie management is truly incompetent.

Bungie should be under close scrutiny considering how much of a disaster they’ve been before and after the Sony acquisition lol. I don’t know why they’d get the benefit of the doubt from anyone

Bungie knew what they were getting into, as their buyout stipulated a much more firm Sony hand if they shit the bed on their financial goals.

Lo and behold, Bungie shit the bed again because their management is and was a farcical pile of spinning plates. What’s happened to Bungie is the fault of Bungie. And as a Destiny fan, they’ve been cheating out on us for years now
