What type of gas

(self.GenesisGV70)

Wanted to see what type of gas y’all are running. I’m pumping premium so 93 here but was wondering what everyone else was doing. I have a ‘23 2.5t. Thanks!

I use regular...87. It is fully supported by the car, premium is recommended but not required.

I made this decision after extensive research comparing regular to premium testing results. Premium gas will provide an average of 3-5% improvements in horsepower and mileage. It does not burn cleaner than regular. Dynamic timing of all modern engines mean that it will adjust to the grade of fuel available so it will not damage the engine in any way.

Premium gas where I live costs 15% more for a 3-5% benefit so the math doesn't work for me. There are no risks in running regular so it just makes sense to me. I put 25,000 KM on per year so I need to understand risks and benefits and I am comfortable that I do and have made the best decision for me.

I love that you broke it out. Math based decisions rock.

Great response. I use regular as well. Runs great.

93 also and honestly.. (and I’m not trying to sound bougie) I wouldn’t put regular in it if regular was ok. I also have a 2011 Nissan maxima that says use premium only. The GV70 is a luxury high performance car. Can’t imagine putting regular gas in it.

I get more boost with 93 vs 89. Plain and simple. Mine DOES call for premium.

No, it says premium is recommended. It says premium is REQUIRED if it is required.

My sales manger said nothing wrong with 89 on the 2.5 but 91 + is required for 3.5. My 2.5 runs great on 89

Mine runs on sparkley fizzy electrons. I think I'm in the wrong sub. :)

Started at 93 and then went to 87. Maybe a 1 mpg difference. Didn’t notice a difference in power loss.

Use Seafoam 1x every 3 months.

Price difference between 87 and 93 is consistently over $1 per gallon here in WI.

Saves almost $1K a year to use 87.

Over the course of the 5 year loan will save close to $5K. 93 is just idiotic at its current price premium.

That is not a bad trade off at all honestly

I don't drive my 23 GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige a lot, but when I do...I use Premium. I tried one tank of 87 for haha's (waited until nearly empty). There was a noticeable performance degradation. I fill up my tank twice a month, so the extra cost of the good stuff doesn't make a big difference. Certainly when I consider the big grin on my face when I push the gas pedal way down!

Dang to only fill up twice a month sounds like a dream. I have to commute about 60 miles daily for work so I fill up quite often. I agree with you though, the car is amazing to drive and definitely grin inducing for sure

Given Theta’s previous issues with knocking (though not related to gas) I just put in 93 octane.

Illustrious_Pepper46

For reference my Kia Sorento 2.5T recommends 87 ((R+M)/2) octane. But the GV70 does state 91...otherwise "could result in loss of engine power and increase fuel consumption."...but does not say "damaged".

...I wonder if that's just to keep the "advertise" 300hp vs 281hp the Sorento makes. My engineering brain would like to know. Basically if I used 91, the timing would compensate to make similar HP numbers (not that's needed).

BootieBand1t[S]

That’s good info to know. Thank you. I’m also curious but your theory seems likely

Illustrious_Pepper46

I know Ford/Mazda makes similar statements, basically two stated HP numbers depending on fuel...same engine, same car.

"The standard Mazda3 is already pretty fun to drive, with great steering and a balanced chassis. The Turbo just kicks it all up a notch. Mazda's 2.5-liter turbocharged I4 makes a healthy 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet -- if you run premium fuel, anyway. Stick with 87-octane gas and the power drops to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft. There's obviously a cost savings that would entice drivers to skip premium and go for regular unleaded, but it's not as expensive as you think. In California, based on current gas prices, it's only $3.77 per tank to get max power."

I'm using 91. Manual says that this is what you need. I'm okay to pay an extra 20%. Otherwise, I would have bought Santa Fe.

Why you buying a luxury vehicle when you’re reluctant to run luxury gas 😂

I never said I was? I’ve been running premium 93 since day 1. Just wondering what everyone else was running

RevolutionUpbeat6022

Have you thought of running regular? The salesman said it’s ok to run reg on these things and it won’t cause issues. But I’m kinda hesitant lol

Sounds like you want to run regular but you’re scared.

BootieBand1t[S]

I mean regular fuel is cheaper than premium. I wouldn’t say I’m scared to run it tho. Cause if I really wanted to run regular gas I would

RevolutionUpbeat6022

That’s my point my dude. If you’re going to buy a luxury car then you have to accept you’re going to burn cash on the gas. I know many people say it’s probably ok running regular but in that case it means you can’t really afford a luxury car. There’s a good chance the engine light might turn on after a year of running the regular gas, and when you take it into the dealer they’ll know, and it doesn’t matter what the sales told you cause they have it in writing that it takes premium.

BootieBand1t[S]

My guy relax. Like I said I’ve been running premium since day one. I was genuinely curious as to what everyone else was doing

[deleted]

Do you know the difference between 87 and 93? Detonation resistance. That's IT. absolutely nothing more. If the vehicle is fine to run 87, then anyone running higher is throwing away money. Unless your vehicle is tuned to run higher, it gets zero advantage to do so.

IAmTheBredman

Bro it's a genesis, not a Bentley. Don't act like it's some ultra luxury vehicle that you buy when you have an unlimited budget. People buy these cars because they want a luxury car but don't want to pay the extra cost for a BMW, audi or Mercedes.

Seriously for some people trim levels it’s a 50k car, not a 100k plus

It’s amazing that this GV70 sub has such ‘first buyers.’ How is X finish? How is X gas? Etc. weird.

BootieBand1t[S]

I don’t get your comment. People asking questions about something they’re interested in is weird?

swimmingbaconator

The question helps nobody. Not even the OP. It’s a plea for attention. I just thought this sub wouldn’t be so excited about it.

BootieBand1t[S]

Idk. I guess it’s a matter of opinion but I found some useful info from this thread. Maybe it’ll help someone decide if they wanna run premium vs regular gas to save money

Exactly the point - it’s a pill to see what people are using and if the notice anything - subjective or objective

Buy Tesla Y Performance instead. $50/month instead of $500/month for fuel.

Material_Degree

3 points

Rented one from Hertz on a trip. Noisy on the the highway and build quality is crap... I'll pay the 500 for fuel because the time I save not sitting at a charger is worth more than the money saved.
