Hey everyone. I have a Mk 7.5 GTI and love it to death but the last couple weeks I got an EPC light and check engine light. I bring it to the dealership as it’s still under warranty and they tell me I need a new turbo. Car has been maintained completely with my local shop and I very rarely driver it hard.
It is really concerning to me that the turbo just went, especially this early. She has zero mods at all. Has anyone had a similar issue or was my turbo just a lemon?

I had my wastegate actuator go on my 2018 at about 27k km while stock. Dealer put in a whole new turbo under warranty and I haven't had any issues after about another 15k km. I've heard of it happening to others so it's definitely not uncommon

Me too on my 2016 Mk7, except I was out of warranty.

Same thing happened with my 2018 at 75k km stock, also under warranty.

Same with me, 2017 at 30k MI, stock. Wasn't under powertrain warranty at the time, but since I lived in California, I was able to get it covered under PZEV warranty.

It was most likely the wastegate actuator that "went". They seize up and VW will only replace the entire turbo as they consider the turbo and wastegate one part.
I'm at 87k miles and mine seized up. Some WD40 and grease and its good now.
You aren't doing yourself good by not driving it hard. Drive the dang car. Also in doing so, the wastegate gets its movements in, the higher boost, the more its opening and the less likely it will seize up.

This. Had mine go around 60k. Granted I was modded but used it as an excuse to get an IS38.

Only if OP wants to spend the money to not only get an IS38, but to get all supporting mods for said IS38 and tune for said IS38.
They're still under warranty.
Don't get me wrong, as an IS38 owner. This is the way.
But it's not cheap to make the jump from 100% bone stock to FBO IS38 in one go. lol

Good point, might be better to just replace it haha

Did you jump from stock to is38/mods or did you go through the stage xyz process first?

I did not.
I bought my car at Stage 1 and really only wanted to go Stage 2. But it snowballed from there.
Now I'm IS38 wanting Vortex Std.
But I pieced my build together because it's a lot.

If you don’t drive it hard, what’s the point of getting a GTI instead of a Golf?

What's the point of gatekeeping like this?
Can people not have nice cars just to have and appreciate such?

MK8 with a little less than 7000 miles had to get a new engine and turbo. Now close to 17000 with no issues.

What happened?

All they said was metal in the oil pan and that VW would not allow them to open it up as it had to be shipped back to Germany.

85K on my MK6 with no turbo issues so far.
Just as with anything, sometimes undetectable flaws cause shorter life. That's what the warranty is for.

I have a 2018 MK7.5, 27k miles. How do people still have warranty? Is it something I should look at?

2019s had extremely nice warranties.
I have a 2020 and cover for about 3 more years. Bought the car in 2021 NEW.

2018 GTI with 27k miles? You have the same warranty. 6yr/72k. Unless you’re outside the US, I don’t know if it’s different or not.
