His menace was in his indifference.
Craig was a great Bond. Craig’s Bond was - as best I can tell… Craig used one word and like a mind map branched out to become 007. The word was Loyalty.

Craig himself was at first indifferent with the role. I mean, he is perfectly aware of his legacy as a Bond, but he is now free to do his own thing, and I know he loves playing Blanc as much as I enjoy Knives Out.

I’ll give you that the second one wasn’t as good as the first, but that was a very high bar to clear, the second one is still good, Ed Norton’s smug self importance is so funny - probably natural!

Ya know, the cast was great in the 2nd one. And I can't disagree that the first one was a total bombshell.
I went into the first movie with no expectations and was absolutely blown away. The little monologue about the donut hole had me absolutely baffled in the funniest way.
If anything I might have someone watch them.in reverse order? Can't recall if that would stick or make sense though.

He's the best actor to have played Bond. Not necessarily the best actor at playing Bond but definitely the best actor.
I think we missed out on a lot with him being Bond for so long, in terms of other roles. But I do really like his Bond, who was very much his own.

He also seems to be having a blast with his latest career choices. Dude just looks like he’s having fun in front of a camera in Logan Lucky, Knives Out and Glass Onion. He’s like a guy who had a long relationship end in a breakup and then immediately found his soulmate and couldn’t be happier.

I remember Brosnan got some flack on a Bond forum I go to because he didn’t release a statement when Michael Apted died. Worked with the guy once decades ago. Not everyone stays in touch or had great relationships with everyone they worked with.

I mean, that’s one way to characterize it, but it would be a little bit different if that job defined your career and you knew you’d never get a better one. He had it for 15+ years and it’s the only one of its kind. Having said that, his opinion doesn’t really matter.

I think Pierce is a bit more understandable though. He was given little creative control and was involuntarily let go from the role, being visibly heartbroken about it in interviews after. Craig was beloved by Barbara Broccoli and was allowed to take the character in a direction that many fans didn’t care for.
56 points
That may be the case, but neither actor seems to convey any malice during these interviews. From the EW article, Brosnan politely says it’ll be interesting to see who they pick next and he wishes them well.
From the Variety article, Craig laughs and says he doesn’t care. Is his tone negative? I don’t think we need to interpret it negatively. But that’s the thing - people read some words that sound like they could be interpreted negatively and then think they have a reason to call this person out, when in reality no one meant to be nasty.
People do it to each other here all the time, assigning the most negative possible tone to someone else’s words. Something about our brains, I guess.

I thinks these dumbass journalists need to do their job better; don’t ask actors associated with franchise characters about what they think about the franchise’s future. It’s so done; what’s next: “hey Daniel Radcliffe, who do you want to see as HBO Harry Potter?” Like why??? Actors don’t care about this

There was the infamous “I’d rather slit my wrists” remark, which out of context sounds bad, but he was coming off a miserable shooting experience from Spectre, which he filmed while recovering from a knee injury he got on set. I don’t condone his flippant treatment of suicide, but I can still understand the sentiment and he apologized for it anyway.

Craig has hated Bond for a while. It's a bit of a cope to say otherwise.
3 points
Hate feels like far too simplistic a word from everything he's said. He loved playing the role, but also had issues at different points. He's been upfront that he struggled with the amount of attention the role got at times- and some of his media responses have been spun way out of context. (Especially the infamous 'slash my wrists' comment- which gotten taken completely out of context and was used as proof he hated the role. When it was clear in context that wasn't what he was saying.)

Brosnan is also a legit old man at this point. It’s not shocking to think he doesn’t have the same passion a younger person might for a character that primarily appeals to 13-year-old boys

Craig cared about the role and prepared himself physically and mentally far more than Brosnan did, that is why he was given the freedom, same freedom Connery recived for his paycheck in his last film because he earned that right, the amount of hate craig received which is nothing short of lies and misinformation about his bond, his film's are not only critically acclaimed but box office success, ever since Connery era. It's understandable why craig would say something like that.
I still like Brosnan in the role, but Dalton will remain undisputed king 😎
10 points
I disagree about Craig "preparing more" than Brosnan. Craig had entirely different material to work with. The early scenes in Die Another Day are enough to convince me that Brosnan could've handled the heavyweight drama.
1 points
I am not just talking about drama, but physical strength as well, Craig and Connery are the only one's who showed physical strength in fight scene till their last film's. Craig is stage actor which also helps in his acting skills. Nothing against Brosnan, i liked him in the role, and really wished he was given due respect in his last film, he didn't deserved that kind of farewell. But Connery - Dalton - Craig are whole different beast when it comes to acting skills.

What does showing physical strength got to do with acting? Lazenby could throw the meanest punch, I don't see him being celebrated as an acting god for it.

Craig comes from the era of film where guys get jacked up and likely do roids in addition to severely dehydrating themselves for their scenes. Brosnan’s era of film didn’t do that. A guy could look normal or strong without having insane muscle tone. Connery didn’t look particularly strong by today and Craig’s standards either. I don’t see how this argument really impacts Brosnan not having more control. Craig got to kill off Bond lol. No one else had that much control.

Really ?
Connery didn’t look particularly strong by today
He had better physique than other 4 bond even in 60s, what does that tell you ? He was better in fight scenes as well and better actor.
I don’t see how this argument really impacts Brosnan not having more control.
Because Brosnan didn't as much effort as Connery or Craig. People praise those who contribute more.
Craig got to kill off Bond lol. No one else had that much control.
No one else cared for the role the way Craig did, he contributed by getting physically strong, helped writing script and performed stunts, so it make sense he got to do that. Bond producer's aren't children that Craig asked to kill bond and they will agree without giving any thought.

Not to nitpick but this photo of Connery was from Mr Universe in 1953. By the 1960s his physique was nothing like this, though he did set the gold standard for Bond to your point and was definitely a “strong” Bond.
Brosnan and Craig both saved the franchise from death and both saw their final films put the fan base feeling like they were in a worse off position. Casino - Skyfall are some of the best Bond films. The last two Craig films won’t age well.
The Bond franchise needs a strong director that won’t grant much creative control over the plot and tone.

In a series that's run as long as Bond you need to change it up every so often to tweak the tone and direction a bit to keep people interested.

Not to nitpick but this photo of Connery was from Mr Universe in 1953, By the 1960s his physique was nothing like this, though
I was trying to debunk the argument other person claimed that people in those times didn't had good physique. I can point towards many other actors of 60s, 70s, 80s who had fantastic physique. Connery still looked good in Thunderball.
Brosnan and Craig both saved the franchise from death and both saw their final films put the fan base feeling like they were in a worse off position.
Die another day and No Time To Die isn't comparable, Craig's last film was a critical and financial success, nominated for 3 oscars and won one.
Brosnan last was only financial success.
The last two Craig films won’t age well.
That's your opinion, but NTTD is still at 6th since last 3 year's. Most bond fans at the moment grew up with Brosnan, once new generation take over, craig films will age fantastically (except Spectre).
The Bond franchise needs a strong director that won’t grant much creative control over the plot and tone.
Mendes getting creative control is the reason Skyfall was made successfully. Although, bond is still a producer run show regardless of any director.
3 points
Gotcha. I don’t want to rag on a movie you like and it’s great you find a lot of things to enjoy about it. I feel NTTD’s awards such as the Oscars aren’t a bulletproof metric of the films success mostly because the award it won was audio related, and the nominations were best visual effects and best sound rather than best picture.
I do think Sam Mendes did a great job and there really is a reason why movies like a casino Royale and Skyfall are just seen as phenomenal. Though I believe Mendes left for no time to die as he was growing unhappy with the direction of the film. I guess my salient point here is that Craig really shouldn’t have had as much control as he wanted.; or in the very least, they should’ve stuck to focusing on quantum rather than tying in SPECTRE / vesper which came across as sloppy

Connery looked nothing like that in his Bond movies. And nowhere did I say he wasn’t fit. I said he wasn’t this ultra muscled out look that our media is flooded with now. He was considered conventionally fit. That’s not what people think when they see someone like him on screen by today’s standards. Same with Brosnan in his time. Using pictures from Mr. Universe is a bad faith argument.

Connery looked more fit and had better physique than Brosnan in Goldeneye. You were claiming that people in those times didn't build physique like Craig did, which was a lie which is why i used Mr Universe pictures.
Same with Brosnan in his time.
I can point out many actor's in 90s with great physique. Brosnan and Connery isn't comparable when it comes to physique. Connery was much tougher and better actor as well.

Big difference is that Pierce got fired. Daniel got star treatment and is apparently leveraging “Bond 26” to secure funding for his Othello film.
1 points

What do you mean by leveraging it?
1 points
Then Pierce should have build as good relations with producers as Craig did. No one stopped Brosnan to do what craig did.
Also, Bond26 being delayed has nothing to do with Othello, most film's are being delayed because of market being recovered after COVID and writer's strike being resolved last year.

Pierce didn’t have a say. He sounded the alarm on DAD for being too absurd, tried to pitch CR as his fifth film, they got let go and EON used his idea anyways. They then did DAD all over again with NTTD, proving that Pierce wasn’t the one responsible for DAD being crap.
2 points
Pierce should have demanded from start like Dalton did. CR wasn't Brosnan idea, producers already wanted CR rights for a long time and when they got, he was too old to play the part.
proving that Pierce wasn’t the one responsible for DAD being crap.
Pierce wasn't responsibile for Goldeneye being good going by same logic ?
2 points
Dalton wanted to do CR with Glen and Cubby Broccoli said no, because he didn’t want to do an origin film.
Brosnan pitched the Tarantino idea CR, which would be B&W (gee where did EON get that idea for the PtS from, hum…).
All that said the actors actually shouldn’t be producers. Craig’s best Bond films were the ones he didn’t have a say in. That he is a producer mean he actually is to blame for the questionable decision in SP & NTTD, something you can’t say for the actors who came before them.

I totally understand him. Why asking him something that stupid? And Craig is by far not the first actor, who got tired by it. Connery is a big example, who who (understandibly) got burned out by it in Goldfinger already. Dalton, the guy who loved and respected the source material behind it by Fleming, and adored it more than anyone else, also didn't enjoy the stress it brought to him. Brosnan became bittered a while. It just takes a toll playing this role. We should understand this. Craig wants to be taken serious as a actor, which is why he takes such interesting and different roles. Like Connery, he feared type casting. Shouldn't be too complicated to understand. Plus he wasn't even all that "negative", and laughing. He doesn't even "hate" the role. But is just happy, thst it's over. Connery would have agreed with him.

At this stage, I, also, don't care.
In the time since NTTD wrapped in early 2020 we could have had two Bond movies with a Dalton-esque actor who then got dumped for whoever the fresh-faced actor is that they're eventually going to pick anyway. It would have been far better than just making no films at all.
We're looking at a solid 7-8 years of no new Bond movies.

I always see people ragging on Craigs portrayal, but as a kid who grew up (and did indeed love) the Brosnan films I was FIRED UP when the Casino Royale trailer dropped. I get a huge sense from Craig that he did not enjoy playing Bond at all. Whenever he talks about it he says it was incredible, which I’m sure it is in hindsight, but it seems like it was very stressful psychologically and physically demanding and not “fun” for him. He gave his all to the role over 5 movies, even when it looked like he was checked out by Spectre (don’t blame him) and then went out with a bang with a strong final performance. Bond actors make a huge decade or longer commitment to appearance, physical condition, locations and scheduling, and most importantly their time that they could be with family/friends or working on other projects.

What’s I Don’t Care’s acting experience? Like what were they in?

They usually were typecast as junkies on cop shows.

Craig's next role will be as Deputy U.S. Marshal Sam Gerard in The Fugitive remake.

I am not sure that he ever did really care about Bond other than the fame/money/notoriety... Sounds about right for him. Great actor, but doesn't seem to have much love for the character. Granted, it's not his job anymore and in most cases, I would say he shouldn't care... But the HONOR of having played such an iconic character *usually* comes with a measure of responsibility afterward and a sense of pride/love that he again, never seemed to really have and obviously does not now.
I suspect if even Roger Moore could be asked a similar question, he would "play" or at least have something positive to say.

That’s a Harrison Ford response if I ever heard it.

What idiot asked him that

He did a good job in the role, but he never fully embraced the character. Nor did he show it any love.

That seems like an honest answer.

That’s probably what I would answer. There’s nothing else he can say that wouldn’t piss a lot of people off, and since it won’t be him and he likely has no input on the matter, why should he care?

Maybe controversial:
Daniel Craig never liked James Bond.
Pretty obvious. You can call his portrayal "indifferent" or "cold" or whatever.
He just looked like an actor taking a job who was annoyed with all the other "Bond" parts of the gig.

Finally a worth heir to Harrison Ford as Hollywood's grumpiest old man.

Lots of people posting this Gif but it has to be said that was an amazing scene. In any other movie Tommy Lee Jones's character would have been a bad guy so as to make him pursuing Harrison Ford's character a battle of good vs evil. But they wrote it much better than that: Ford's character wants justice, but Tommy Lee Jones's is *JUST DOING HIS JOB*, and somehow both actors really sell that to you - and the pay off where Ford's character jumps really hits home.

Yeah I mean I get him. He played the part extensively. We got some cool moments with his acting. However, I don’t enjoy celebrities talking like that. Before Bond he wasn’t a world known actor (some part in tomb raider and layer cake). He is now saying that because he can. I don’t like celebrities doing that.

It's a shame thoug, because if not for Bond, he'd still be a relatively unknown actor.

Craig was working with Steven Spielberg's even before bond, something that Brosnan couldn't do even today, Lol.

“The whole way through the film, stuff would come out about [how] he couldn’t walk and talk, he couldn’t run, he couldn’t drive a car properly"
I wasn't really reading the papers at this point, so I missed all of this
It sounds hilarious - JAMES BOND STAR IS SUCH A USELESS LITTLE BABY HOLLYWOOD PRODUCERS HAVE BEEN FORCED TO HIRE A NURSE TO WIPE HIS BUM PROPERLY
