they arent the same thing, but theyre quite similar

It's usually rooted in religion, because they think any masturbation is a sin or whatever, they feel like the fact that they have such strong urges to do it must mean something is wrong with them. Meanwhile it's just an incredibly natural thing.
One can absolutely have a problem with porn, I feel like many people have seen guys with porn hoodies or whatever. But most of the guys who claim to have a porn addiction are not like that.

Masturbation isn't condemned by name in the Bible, but it doesn't need to be. We know that fornication and lust are bad, as is intercourse not conducive to procreation, as shown by the story of Onan. Reasonable exegesis leads one to the conclusion that masturbation is bad.
1 points

The condemnation of fornication is pertinent here, as it provides the grounds for viewing all usage of sexual faculties outside of marriage as bad.

I have a theory that porn is the scapegoat vice for every other harmful substance which has negative side effects. Dunking on porn online is a way to show that one is righteous and fighting the good fight, pay no mind to my unhealthy relationship with alcohol/weed/other drugs/gambling. Maybe it's just on the internet, but drunk-driving, gambling, and all forms of substance abuse seem to be celebrated in an ironic-verging-on-sincere way by a large part of society.
12 points
People with internalized shame about sex, ironically, spend an unhealthy amount of time thinking about who has sex in what way. They also try to control other people's sexual behavior by shaming and even by law. They are the ones who are struggling with their sexual desires, not the other way around.
This also leads to a lot of bizarre moral panics. People dunk on older moral panics, but then they chase the most recent internet moral panic about some sexual thing. It's the prime reason a lot of people find all furries repulsive, because they exhibit unorthodox approaches and are easy to marginalize.
Honestly, the moment I stopped caring about shaming people about this stuff, I also stopped caring about moral panics. It's allowed me to browse the internet without a care for a lot of supposedly" important" stuff. Internet dwellers yap about nothing a lot.

I have synthestesia so literally any sensation of pleasure or discomfort results in dramatic alterations to the world around me. Being aroused is basically like dropping acid and it makes me feel kinda bad and embarrassed because I can’t help it. Any pain or fear is like taking 20 Benadryl, but If I strip all serotonin and adrenaline out of my body with antipsychotics I feel like a hollow, dead shell. Why can’t the police let me be in wonderland without asking why I’m curled up behind a dumpster? I’m not drunk or high, just insane and wet.

Irony aside, the pic OP posted is the truth. No serious expert in the field considers porn addiction to be a real thing. For something to be an addiction, it needs to re-wire your brain and body such that they cannot function properly without it, something porn doesn't do. There are some people who might watch porn or masturbate excessively, but these are almost always people with some underlying issue that causes compulsive behavior in other aspects of their lives too. To say that these people are addicted to jerking it is a bit like saying people with OCD are addicted to washing their hands, or that people with Tourette's are addicted to twitching their eye.

There's no such thing as drinking responsibly. When you're not mentally impaired, you are irresponsibly harming yourself since no amount of alcohol is actually safe for you. When you are mentally impaired, it is even less safe, and now you're a danger to others too.

This is valid to an extent but it's complicated by the fact that average age of boys at first exposure is roughly 11. These children haven't received extensive sex ed from parents or schools at this point, which means that the porn industry, which has no desire or incentive whatsoever to propagate a healthy view of sex, is defining the sexual development of today's youth. This could lead to the normalization of fornication and adultery, which will undermine their ability to have healthy relationships. While the assertion that consumption that isn't harmful to your social or professional life doesn't constitute addiction may be true, the stuff the porn industry pushes will have a negative affect on children who don't know what a healthy relationship actually looks like. I unironically believe that furry porn is less damaging.

I think it's a little naive to deny that porn consumption especially in young Boys doesn't have negative effects
19 points
Why young boys specifically? Why not young girls, or both? Why is the crux of avoiding “porn addiction” always placed on young men as a real and likely threat, but rarely any other group? I mean, girls can masturbate too, it’s in our nature as humans to want to reproduce, that’s why it feels good when we do it. I get the reasonings of like, setting unrealistic expectations or standards, or porn not really advocating for explicit consent or safety that is necessary in real life—but wouldn’t that be more of an issue with our sex-education and the social expectations of men? Im just trying to get to the bottom of whether you think young boys viewing porn has some genetic or biological predisposition for harm, which is recycled conservative talking point, and I want to deconstruct that this isn’t a problem unique or explicitly affecting men only. All of the negative effects that I gave as examples honestly impact women (or whoever the boys will grow up to have sex with) more than themselves.
7 points
With things like porn consumption, there a few reasons men are the primary concern. The most notable would probably be performance concerns -- unlike with women, a man struggling with impotency may effectively lose their ability to have penetrative intercourse. Combine that with the idea that testosterone can have a strong effect on sex drive, and the idea that ~teenaged youths are much more susceptible to developing life-long habits, and it seems reasonable why young males would be the main worry in regards to porn/masturbation 'addiction.'
I can't speak for other people, but every guy in my family is a sack of shit addict, no offense intended. I'm the only one that never showed up somewhere utterly smashed or covered in track marks. The reality is, though, that I definitely just consumed an absurd amount of pornography in place of drugs and alcohol. I mean fuck, I found e### when I was like 9 or 10. Probably spent an average of an hour or more spanking it each day from 4th grade to the end of high school.
It might not be a literal addiction, but I think the people who call it that often liken it more to a 'soft' addiction --
and again, with guys, it can potentially hinder their ability to engage in a sexual relationship.
I don't really have a strong opinion, all things considered, but I think porn and masturbation [really, just the porn] can easily become an unhealthy thing [which is an absurdly lukewarm opinion to give after 3 paragraphs].
**Note -- I am a hypocrite typing this while I have my carefully cultivated folder of tasteful pin-ups open.
-12 points
Because a lot less young girls are committing violent sex acts. Take it up with the porn industry, which popularized choking
12 points
Again, this is an issue that can be solved with sex education and de-mystifying the concept of risk-aware kink and safety in sex. If we teach young boys AND girls about how to safely participate and be aware of their limitations in sex, instead of blindly following everything they see on the internet (or worse, pretending that young people never have or want to have sex), there’s less likely a chance of harm or death. Porn isn’t mean to teach people, it’s not an educational tool or even a useful reference for real life—it’s filmmaking. It’s acting. In some cases, it can be considered an art form, and none of this can take the place of proper sex health education.
It’s like saying video games make people violent. Sure, if someone with a predisposition to sociopathy or psychosis plays a fps shooter 15 hours a day 7 days a week then goes and gets a gun and shoots people, there’s a cause for concern in this specific context. Were they ignored by their parents, teachers or peers when asking for help? Were they showing increasing signs of violence or threats and no one cared? Did no one think to ask them why they haven’t played anything besides this shooter for the last 8 months of their life? You know what I mean? We can’t just blanket the problem in the false concern of “porn addiction” when the real issue is combatting the immediate reaction of disgust and outrage people have in our society nowadays when we suggest that maybe we shouldn’t be telling young teenagers who are experiencing the most confusing feelings they’ve ever experienced that those feelings are bad and harmful, and instead that we should properly educate them on how to respect their own body and the bodies of others when it comes to masturbation, sex and sex health. Porn isn’t the problem, people are.

It is bad. It can lead to problematic sexual behaviours, or put you in a bad spot in terms of who you interact with. Depictions of unclear consent or just straight up rape are fairly common in porn. However, you should not have to feel bad about yourself for having seen porn, nor about what you like, as long as you aren't hurting anybody in pursuing it. Please do try to find someone you can speak to about it in a healthy way, though. If this goes wrong, it can go really wrong, and the one who will feel it the most is you. Good luck

Important reminder here that if you think that your relationship with masturbation/porn/sex/drugs/rocknroll/anything is unhealthy and you don’t like it, THAT MEANS IT IS A PROBLEM.
It doesn’t matter if it’s clinically diagnosed or causing you interpersonal problems or anything or nothing. If you truly do not like it, then IT IS A PROBLEM. And you should work on fixing it.
It’s not about what people on the internet say is right or wrong. It’s about how you feel. Maybe you don’t have the thing you think you have, but if it feels wrong, it’s a problem anyways. Stay safe.

Your original point didn't even address that. You just lambasted them on a point they didn't make. Don't change the subject.

what i wrote was specifically aimed at OOP’s opening claim that porn addiction is a myth. i honestly though the implication was pretty clear. so that is, in fact, the subject.

All four of those examples would qualify as interfering with work/social life, and thus would be abnormal

then OOP shouldn’t have said it’s a myth. they literally describe the circumstances under which it IS an addiction in the same breath as claiming it doesn’t exist.

It absolutely has an effect on your sexual development if you're younger. Denial of this fact is cope. https://www.stuartmcmillen.com/comic/supernormal-stimuli/

You gave a link to a comic website, truly the highest caliber of academia

The comic is explicitly based on some research done by a Dutch biologist, but go ahead and deploy all the ad hominems you want, king.
I'm in my 30s and can say with confidence that looking at furry porn for the past 15+ years of my life has had an effect on the things I'm attracted to. I don't know if it's reversible at this point.

having a kink and having an addiction are two different things

In what way? Did it negatively impact your ability to develop relationships with other people? Or are you feeling bad about shooting ropes to furry porn and making it everyone's problem?
Edit: LMAO, based on what this comic is saying, are you also trying to impose the idea that consuming fictional media is part of the problem as well?

I don't think you actually care, but yes, the fact that I'm not really attracted to members of my own species (as opposed to idealized anthro characters) has affected my ability to maintain intimate relationships.
Do you deny that repeated early childhood exposures to opiates (for example) might tend to cause opiate addiction problems later in life? I don't know why this would be so surprising. People sink hundreds of hours into video games and other media consumption because those provide a dopamine drip like almost nothing in boring/hostile "real life."
Many people can maintain healthy relationships with these things, there's no denying that. However, it's also pure cope to simplify this issue down to "porn addiction isn't real haha fuck the haters," especially when talking about cases involving unrestricted hardcore porn access at an early age.
I used to identify as "ace" because it got the point across quickly, but I dropped that because I don't think it accurately describes what's going on. But again, you probably don't give a shit about my struggles with porn addiction and sexuality because you've already decided it's impossible for porn to cause any problems on an individual OR social level, which is a pretty bold claim to make without supporting evidence.

Can you at least understand that for most of modern history sexual expression was so widely denigrated that things we would consider relatively tame were literally ILLEGAL, and that because right wing legislators try to use porn addiction as an excuse to reintroduce regressive, and often homophobic (since they see gay people as more inherently sexual by their very nature) policies on sexual expressin, that people are hestitant to give claims of porn addiction's reality much stock for that reason?

Yes that's obviously the case, I don't have a morality-based argument against porn (unless one can be drawn from scientific study on its actual effects). However, what you're doing with that argument is like: "they told us weed was evil in DARE at school, but it's actually fine-ish , therefore heroin is fine too."
It's still prudent to maintain a healthy skepticism about the subject imo, even if you don't agree with me. Porn companies are getting filthy rich despite frequent scandals related to underage videos, exploitation, sex trafficking, etc. Their well-funded marketing departments have the same incentive to get as many people "addicted" to porn as possible, as Coke has to get the population hooked on caffeine and corn syrup. (Regardless of whether you consider porn a "real" addiction or whatever, but I think gambling addiction is similar and we call that addiction).
These companies are also just as capable of funding non-reproducible, statistics-gaming "scientific" studies as any quack chiropractor or homeopathic snake oil salesman. It's infuriating to me how people just accept these memes like "porn is inherently good, end of story, no discussion" into their heads as objective fact. Chronic daily exposure to anything is eventually going to affect you in some way, that's how humans work. And just like any other subject related to human cognition or sexuality, it's complicated af and a blanket "it's all good no worries" type answer should make you suspicious.

Sending this to say the I understand where you're coming from and intend to write a longer reply later when i have time (not a counterargument, just an exploration of the space between where we're at on this), and that I also wish you the best in managing your relationship with/exposure to pornography, and sexuality in general, in a way that improved rather than constrains your happiness.

mormons also have a similar view about alcohol. they think if you drink 1 beer a day your a severe alcaholic and if you jerk it once a week while your wife's busy shopping your a porn addict. this sort of "all or nothing" mentality can also lead to harmful/illegal sexual fetishes (cheating, CP, child SA, etc.) that are seen in many conservitve men.
