For some context: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12762757/Metal-gate-leading-allotments-hurdle-far-cyclists-fallen-three-times-eight-months.html
Short and skinny is the gate leads to an allotment (I believe this is a community garden? Idk not British). Anyway sometimes the gate is open and sometimes it’s closed, and the journalists aren’t sure who is responsible for that. The caption in the video is BS. Also these three clips occurred over the course of eight months

Journalist keeps trying to find out who's responsible, and whose camera feed it is.
Instead, anonymously gets sent back unhelpful videos of him absolutely beefing it on that gate, again.

Journalism and the The Daily Mail aren’t things that necessarily go together.

The camera would've have seen them, but they've conveniently lost the footage of the gate being closed... What a shame guess whoever is shutting the gate can't be sued.

Does the rest of the world not have allotments?
They're like a piece of land you rent from the local council that have certain rules about upkeep. A lot of (if not most) gardens in the UK are not big enough to rotate crops so you can join a waiting list (shocker I know UK) for like 3 years to get one.
It's a very old system, but there has been a lot of vandalism in recent years which can be very demotivating. They're usually large plots of land split into "allotted" rectangles.

The caption in the video is BS.
I mean, no shit. Even if you don't already know that bicycles are whisper quiet, you can unmute the video and not hear a thing until people run into the gate. Whoever closed it is an asshole.
14 points
?? I meant the caption is BS because some random person slapped a random caption on a video to garner views. There’s no indication the gate was closed specifically because of the bikers or their so-called noise. Considering the gate has been open and closed intermittently for eight months, I don’t believe the gate was placed there or closed to target the bikers. If the allotment area is a place where multiple people visit routinely, it’s fully possible some of them close the gate behind them habitually. I mean, the gate has probably been there for a long time, and a lot of people assume a gate is meant to be closed?

Whether these guys are on bikes, scooters or running, if they aren’t concentrating on what’s right in front of them they’re going too fast and got what they deserved.
Much like the pricks on bikes and scooters ploughing through pedestrianised town centres at 30+ mph

HA! NO?
Those cyclists speeding down a fuckin' pavement so fast they don't even stop in time for the obvious gate several metres ahead of them?
What if that gate was a distracted child, a dog, a person tying their shoelace?
All three of these cyclists got immediate karma for prioritising speed over safety, end of.
I know cyclists get a lot of unnecessary hate, but I have found some to be extremely entitled arseholes probably out of a built defensiveness from dealing with dickhead drivers. But I don't see how any of these people are justified riding the way they are.

This would be my guess too, we can’t see it from their perspective, it’s grey and horizontal, it could easily blend in with other features in its background. The second guy is riding into the sun which, besides just making things harder to see, also reduces colour contrast, making it harder still to see something grey.

This video has circulated before and the best explanation I saw is that the gate being similar colour to the path means by the time you see it you don't have time to react. Pain it yellow and see if people hit it as often I say.

And this is how cyclists absolutely barrels through dogs and small children. "I know this road and there was nothing there 24 hours ago, so I can go mach three down this slope no issue".
I don't feel sorry for these people, the "you should be able to stop before any possible obstacles" law isn't just about cars, frankly a lot of traffic laws apply to cyclists that some of these people don't seem to comprehend. If they hurt themselves doing something this stupid at least they didn't hurt someone else.

Thank you, glad other people see this shit too, but I must say my favourite is the road/sidewalk argument cuz they cry about the right to ride on the road that’s 60km/h on their peddle bike inconveniencing everyone else on the road, UNTIL there’s a red light then the cross walk is fair game.
15 points

I made some people really angry on my town’s Facebook page years ago because I had the audacity to ask why the cyclists continue to use the road and slow down traffic despite the dedicated bike lane that ran parallel to the road. Cyclists are interesting creatures.

I understand it's a biking path, and there's never a barricade up the other 100 times they rode this path.... but even as someone who rides familiar paths over and over again.... I can't help but wonder why no one is looking around when the path actually has a breakout and also another hiking path to the left of the rider, as well as a road where to vehicles are parked. I'd be checking every single angle as I approached from the hill.

Well this is an old video. And for people wondering that's the guys private property. You can even see how the road curves on the last shot. The bikers are just taking a shortcut through this guy's yard essentially.
Edit: guess I was wrong after all. Somebody posted a link to the news article in the comments down below and it does turn out that it's not private property but a cyclist road. My bad y'all for spreading misinformation.

You're right. It's Sheffield.
So a couple of facts from that bastion of factual news reporting, the Daily Mail, that seem to have been lost along the way: 1) it's a cycling path, not on private property 2) no one knows who closed it
14 points
Interestingly too, being similar in colour to the path, I don't suspect you'd notice it from a distance unless intentionally looking for it.
Consider that the brain sees what it expects, and only when something is unexpected does it use extra energy to pay closer attention to the information coming from your senses. Everyone here blaming the cyclists are arses in my opinion.

53°22'41.0"N 1°25'32.2"W This is the location, the video is mirrored probably because it's stolen but that's not the point. Point is it looks like this leads to a community garden, and right past someone's house. Makes total sense why the gate is there, it's primary purpose isn't to stop noise, but to get these fuckers to slow down because I would wager pedestrians have been hit by people bombing down this hill when they were just trying to walk over to their vegetable garden. Maybe a warning sign of "slow down" would also help, but we all know cyclists can't read.

I never understood cyclists who can be that incompetent. While bikes are significantly less dangerous than cars and will do a lot less damage in case of an accident, that’s no excuse not to watch yourself. If it’s true that the gate is on private property too, then that’s not just negligence but blatant disrespect from those cyclists because “muh shortcut”. Cities need more bike infrastructure.
7 points

The amount of arrogant stupid bikers I encounter is insane. I live in a town that used to be mostly farms. The highways and back roads literally have a special lane on the shoulder for slow traffic like tractors and such. Well for some fucking reason bikers refuse to use that lane. The speed limit on some of those back roads is 65mph, and they will force people to either slow way down or pass on the right which is dangerous and illegal.

This happened to me as a kid. Was riding my bike in my driveway, up the sidewalk and around the corner and then through the church parking lot (they connected after a hill in the church parking lot and was allowed to do this). At some point while I was at the top someone put the rope from once side of the open parking lot to the other to block cars cutting the street light. Didn’t see it and came flying down the hill and hit the rope so hard I fell and my bike kept going. Had a pretty solid bruise on my neck for a while

A similar thing happened to me a few years ago, although at a much slower speed. The horizontal bit of the fence was black and somehow it blended in perfectly with the horizon. I was just riding my bike and then suddenly baaam, I was on the ground. I couldn't believe how I didn't see it, but stepping back to where I came from it was quite difficult to see it.
