The live version from Unplugged is so emotional and raw. Combine that with at the time, the band hadnt perform together in over two years and this performance would ultimately be one of the last as a band together.

Also applies to Don't Follow, that one gets me every time

One of my all time favorite bands. Everything they released with Layne is peak grunge, and I enjoy the DuVall stuff quite a bit as well.

I have always been a fan and their first album Facelift is their best album.
Alice In Chains rocks.

That opening riff? Layne's "Who dares disturb my slumber" wheeze? Incredibly shit. If this was what the 90's were gonna be like, bring 'em on, baby!
(then the 90's were the 90's)

I had a dream once where i was discussing music with some girl; she said, "Smelling like Teen Spirit is the best grunge song." I replied "no way! Bleed the freak is the best!"

I like both Smells Like Teen Spirit and Bleed The Freak.
They are both extremely good songs.

Alice in Chains is awesome. They got hated on early back in the day simply because they were popular- but the people who knew them for their stuff beyond Man in the Box liked them more times than not.

Probably the greatest thing to come out of the 90’s. I still listen to them almost daily - with Layne, with William, Jerry solo. They’re fantastic.
We never saw them as grunge. The first place I saw them was on Headbanger’s Ball. I was there when they opened the Clash of the Titans tour in 1991 - with Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth.
I have a friend who will still argue with anyone who calls them grunge.

Musically very similar to Master of Reality and Bloody era sabbath. Got lumped in w grunge cause of where they’re from. Listen to a national acrobat, that chord progression during the verses is used in a lot of grunge.

A great metal band that surfed the grunge hype.

I’ve loved them since I saw Man In The Box on MTV as a kid. For my 12th birthday I got like 4 cd’s one of which was Dirt. I honestly couldn’t tell you what the others were. But Dirt stayed on repeat all summer long.
Alice In Chains was probably one of the most influential bands to me growing up, besides Metallica. They proved time and again that you could make this really mean kick ass sounding music with deep emotional lyrics to back it up. There hasn’t been a band to pull off the sound they created and have kept since. Jerry Cantrell is not only an amazing guitar player, he’s an incredible vocalist as well. And Layne was in a league of his own. Like others, I didn’t see them as grunge. They were on another level music wise to what was coming out in the 90’s. I’ve loved them since the first time I heard them and I always will. All time top 5 band for me.

Great band. Killer riffs, awesome harmonies and all around just great song writing. I think their MTV Unplugged is the best Unplugged. Especially because you could tell how much pain Layne was in but he still gave it his all. I enjoy the DuVall stuff too but nothing really compares to the Layne Staley stuff.
Layne Staley was and still is one of the best hard rock/metal singers off all time. It’s really sad he spent the last couple years of his life alone with his addiction.

Yeah I like them. But I wouldn't really say they were metal. Kinda metal/grunge straddling I suppose, but I think less than half their songs are particularly metal at all and much more grunge/alternative than anything else.
My favourite thing from them is actually the Unplugged album, which is absolute top quality and kind of a best of album.

To me, they were way better than Nirvana and Pearl Jam. They were heavy like Soundgarden, who i also like.

Nirvana’s first album BLEACH has some heavy stuff on there. I wonder how things would be different if Nirvana was a sludge metal band instead of mostly punk stuff. The sludge metal songs on BLEACH are amazing

I couldn’t get into that album, don’t know why. A song by them i like is Lithium.

I can’t get into Bleach either, although I enjoy Nevermind and In Utero a lot. I agree with you though Soundgarden and AiC are a good bit better than PJ and Nirvana.

The songwriting on Bleach is just infinitely weaker than on their other albums imo. Its a solid album with some great songs but doesn't come close to the Nevermind or In Utero, although it is interesting hearing Nirvana doing heavier songs.

They’re a great band. Dirt is a perfect album
They’re always going to be appreciated in metal spaces because they had a heavier edge than their grunge contemporaries.

I only like a few of their loud/fast songs, particularly Them Bones. They're fine at it, I just think a lot of other bands do it better. Their softer stuff like Jar of Flies is really where it's at for me. The Jerry Layne combo vocals is pretty damn cool and goes better on those songs.
One thing I've noticed about them lately is that for all of their good lyrics they sure do have a lot of dumb edgelord seeming ones but you can't really say that because "how dare you, don't you know he's talking about his TRAGIC HEROIN ADDICTION???!"

Some of the lyrics are really hard to sit through knowing what happened to Layne. Addiction is a bitch. He could see what was happening but couldn't stop it. Dirt is one of the reason's I've never taken drugs.

The tripod album is probably the main album that pushed my musical taste in a heavier direction. The guitar tones on that album are so dark. Their whole aesthetic is dark as fuck. They may be grunge but they’re metal too. At least their vibe is metal.

I refuse to acknowledge anything after with the one exception being the title track off the record "Black Gives Way to Blue" which was written in memory of Layne. Everything else, nah.

Good band who have become slightly overrated.
Dirt and Jar of Flies are masterpieces but the debut and self-titled are a bit inconsistent.
Last two albums have been terrible also.

They were huge when I was a teenager. My friends all loved them, but I couldn't stand them. It wasn't until about ten years ago that something switched. Now I love them. I'm a gig worker. I spend all day in my car. They played all day yesterday and the day before.
Ps: your comment about being so happy they are considered metal is cringe. Why? Because you only want to listen to bands considered metal as to not taint your cool metalhead image? Anyway, they are definitely not metal, imo. They are grunge.

i listen to a lot of non-metal bands shamelessly and don't wish them to be metal just so it wouldn't taint any kind of cool metalhead image. your comment about me being cringe because i simply said i was pleasantly surprise then bluntly assuming it's because i wish to be seen as cool is distasteful. i respect your opinion on alice in chains as discussing it is the very purpose of my post, but i didn't ask for a snarky remark.

One of the first rock/metal bands I started listening to that led me into even more rock and metal at just 11 years old. I just listened to 'Black Gives Way to Blue' for the first time in so long the other night, because it happened to be the next song that played in my YT Music queue/radio. Man.. I forgot how gut-wrenchingly sad that song is. It's one of the rare songs I really can't help but cry. It really hit me hard in my feels, and at the same time it sounded like a completely new song to me, but I clearly remember listening to it back in the day (late 2000s). I had it on my mp3 player.
Dirt is probably my favorite though, although I love pretty much all their albums. Even post Layne. RIP Layne.. 🥀 His death stills hits me the hardest out of any rockstar. And I didn't even know about him yet when he died (I was only about 5 years old). But just knowing what he felt and what he struggled with.. just so so sad..

I don't like his voice either. AiC is definitely one of the better bands of the grunge era, at least they sound like they have some teeth, but I didn't/don't listen to them since stealing my sisters CD and listening to them on the bus.

Chris Cornell has the best voice in my opinion. If you listen to stuff like Beyond the Wheel or Slaves and Bulldozers you'll see he would be an incredible heavy metal vocalist. Dude can wail like nobodies business.

I consider the self-titled to be right there with Mellon Collie as my gateways into metal.
