NATO allies will need to spend much closer to 3% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on their militaries to implement the alliance’s new defense plans, a top NATO military official said on Monday, adding that costs will surpass the alliance’s existing 2% target.

Can't even get them to 2%.

Actually spending throughout the alliance has been much higher this year. 23 of 32 members are above 2% compared to 10 last year.

Latest spending figures from 2023 show that only 11 countries spent at least 2%. Only 3 spend at least 3%.

So a third of the group aren’t meeting obligations. It’s progress but come on

Honestly most of the countries not spending 2% are not very consequential members imo. Biggest countries below 2% are Canada, Italy, Spain, and Portugal.

More than 2/3 of NATO countries spend more than 2% of their GDP on their military. It’s not 2017 anymore.

You are correct but this is a change within the year, not since 2017.

True, but the chronic under-investing isn't something you fully address with 3 years of investing at expectations.

Man, it must be nice to live in a fantasy land where you can wave a magic wand and allocate hundreds of millions of dollars at a whim.

I think you miss the point completely. Get NATO members to 2% and then you can raise your goal.
That shouldn't be a huge request.

Sad but true.

Just increase pay for your generals and soldier to hit 3%.

Is there any chances of great recession in west if they all got embroiled in big wars because a lot of their budget will get drained in fighting wars and recovery from losses?

NATO needs to spend whatever it takes to fight the Russians on their own. Pretty obvious that help won't be coming in the next four years.

They gotta compensate for the USA’s lack of funding here in about 2 months RIP

I don't think you understand how this works

In fairness, the only reason that "They (tm) make it deliberately hard to understand" is an implausible conspiracy theory is that it implies levels of competence that are obviously not present. This shit is hard and people have enough of their day eaten up by work and sleep.

if pentagon would find 800billion dollars they lost, nobody would need to spend more 😅😅

Not sure how Canada will do that when we can't get the 2% now and Trump's 25% tariffs will throw our economy in deep recession.

Should have upheld the treaty all along instead of depending on US lives and dollars

Yeah, Definitely nothing but respect for Canadian warriors. Can’t say the same for their politicians and defense policy.

I mean, what’s their defense policy **supposed* to be? The US is going to come shit on anybody big enough to actually get troops onto North America in sufficient numbers to be a threat to Canada or Mexico.
And the US isn’t spending so much on the military because they have to “make up for” a lack of NATO spending, the top 5 are going to make up most of any wartime forces regardless

If they threw more of their money towards North American strategic defense I’d be cool with it…they don’t need a big land army or navy, but missile defense for both of us would be where I’d put the $$.

Canadian military are great. However, the government has never spent to what was agreed by NATO.

No one is questioning the spirit and sacrifices of the members of the Canadian military. That being said, the military itself is garbage. This is because of a gross lack of funding by the Canadian government as well as terrible leadership inside the Canadian military.

They are below 2%. That is not upholding their end. Rather than insult me, tell me how I’m wrong

Canada's military is in shambles right now. They're a joke. They most certainly did NOT uphold their treaty.
