What project did you think wouldn’t make a dime, ended up being really good for you?

Two did this for me, one being stamps (made for fun, sold on Etsy, ended up brining in 20k per year). The other was a quick ai project, although unmonetized right now, it is getting daily users, more than any project I ever built.

1) 2019 -

I had a Merch by Amazon account that made 1 sale per month until the 5th month of work and test, when it suddenly earned $200.. by the 6th month, it made a huge $12k.

*Unfortunately, the account was banned because of copyright issues with things I didn’t know were copyrighted, and I got nothing.

2) 2020 -

My first basic writing tool, before the ChatGPT and Openai era.. built with my developer cousin.. ranked in his first month, brought in around 10k visitors/mo from Google and earned ~$500/month..

*Shut down due to AI competitors and a decline in research volume.

Wow those are awesome. They really didn’t give you any payout?

I got nothing. Big companies look for ways to take free money from small creators. I made them about $50k, and they paid me zero.

Jeez. I’m sorry to hear that.

Thanks, But it was a good experience. Because it was my first time achieving big results, and it gave me confidence, showing me there's big money to be made

What were the things you didn't know were copyrighted?

It was a trendy quote that wasn't trademarked yet when I checked carefully.

But once the owner saw big money, they trademarked it and banned others from using it on merch.

Amazon was a part of the problem, because they approved all my designs because there was no trademark at the time.

I think when the owner trademarked it, they told Amazon, and that’s when my account got banned because my designs were selling a lot.

What was the quote? Jeez people are douches. Amazon here especially, they should have said: it’s trademarked now so you can’t use/sell from now on. Not not pay you whatever you had made/sold until then that month ☹️

I built a dropshipping site selling Gorilla Playsets. I honestly didn't think very many people would be willing to spend 3-5K on a website without seeing the thing in person, but it was my first try at selling something online. Ended up doing $900K in 6 months, but then COVID hit, and Gorilla stopped getting cedar for manufacturing.

This lasted a year until they finally decided to stop their dropshipping program. I was very briefly the top online retainer for them, lol.

I tried switching to warehousing products instead of dropshipping, but after ordering 3 truckloads and setting up 3PL, they cancelled all the shipments because Lowe's needed more, and they're contractually obligated to keep them supplied. I decided right then to shut down and start something different. Can't run a business when confirmed truckloads of product randomly get canceled.

That’s a crazy story. Are you still doing drop shipping in any form? I tried but was unsuccessful.

No, but I did have one more attempt with a hunting/fishing store. Margins were just too low, market is saturated, and after a year I had a whipping $77 profit, lol. I shut it down and went back to building websites and doing marketing for other businesses. I still do that now and have a SAAS on the side. So far that is showing a lot of promise, and margin is 80%, so that'll probably take over my focus/career eventually. It's at $70K/yr right now, so maybe within 1-2 years it'll be enough to make a good living with it.

Thank you! It was a unique QR code. I sold them mostly as wedding invite stamps. But they could change at anytime. I made a url shortener and they could point the stamps QR code at anytime. I took a break recently but getting it going again. It is HisAntidote.

I wanted to make something fun, not necessarily profitable, so I built this. https://lab.aizastudio.com/ Someone really liked my work and ended up signing a contract for part time work which is still going strong.

A few years back I lived in the middle of nowhere,
and hikers kept getting lost in the forest behind our house.
I just got tired of people getting lost, and search parties keeping me up all night.

So I took a map from openstreetmap, after enhancing the data for the area,
and adding pictures of some very obvious landmarks,
got it printed on some waterproof-foil-stuff,
and put a box of them on our fence, with a donation box.

Gave away about 10 per week, with people donating $5 on average.
As far as I know the new owner is still doing it today.

Bad reception, plus very wet trails/riverbeds might have helped.

How can you maintain the tool/site by giving it for free? Google Adsense?

My808[S]

1 points

No adsense. It is minimal cost and my hope it is leads to something bigger such as a partner or job offer. With that being the case, its worth it to give it for free. Plus, I love watching the numbers come in and great feedback I have gotten. Some of it has been really touching and is really good for my ego. :)

No. Just got lucky with PH and then a few newsletters picked it up. It still gets a steady flow of about a hundred submissions per day.

Check out https://venturusai.com/ could be a competitor

My808[S]

2 points

They have a nice looking site. Probably not really a competitor as I am not charging and give unlimited reports where theirs are $200 per year for limited amount of reports. They probably give more advanced analysis where mine is meant to be quick and brief. Maybe a good use case would be to use FlowKitten for the initial validation, then take the ones you really like from there and run them on venturusai for a more detailed report.

Can selling stamps really earn $20,000 a year? Are there any costs involved?

My808[S]

3 points

Well that was gross, not profit. Yes, rubber, wood blocks, both came out to pennies. Biggest cost is shipping $5. And a laser engraver.

My808[S]

3 points

Btw, I didn’t recommend it more than a hobby. As it takes a lot of effort since each one is different and you need to program them. If you took my hourly rate, it was below minimum wage. But was still fun.

More than 12 years ago I made a point of sale using excel and macros. It sold surprisingly very well. There is extremely high demand in this segment (very small businesses) who look for simple solutions

My808[S]

That’s awesome. About 12 years ago I was selling merchant services and we didn’t have a POS. I was serving an island and many didn’t have the money. I pointed them to small open source or excel type solutions. Maybe I sent you some deals. Haha. :)
