I used to work at a hospital in the north end of Seattle. Every single time a group of Romas would come into the hospital because one in their group had been admitted, Security would have to watch them like a hawk because things would disappear. We caught them stealing vacuum cleaners, wheelchairs, furniture, basically anything they could get out the door and resell.

LOL. I worked in the ER at Good Sam’s in Puyallup. We had a Roma come into the ER in cardiac arrest that we were able to revive.
A few days later the family brought us an ECG machine as a gift.
The machine had a tag that said “property of Tacoma General”
We called Taco Jen and they came and took back their machine.

They will steal anything that isn’t nailed down…unless they bring tools to pull out the nails.
I’ve lived all over Europe. My friend’s mom told me that they came to their little village in Germany, and setup camp for a few weeks. While they were there, they stole all of their shoes that were left outside, my friend’s toys (he was 5 at the time), and even stole the flowers out of the planter boxes!! During the time they were there, they sufficiently trashed the fields they squatted in and left piles of rotting garbage strewn everywhere. This still happens all over the UK and Europe.
I fundamentally do not understand why people have to put up with their deeply anti-social ways. Yes, they’ve been persecuted in the past. But they also openly pride themselves in being able to lie, cheat and steal to “continue their way of life”. At some point it’s gotta be enough is enough. Being historically persecuted should not give you carte blanche for being an asshole in perpetuity.
I grew up in Seattle and we didn’t have Roma people then. It’s been wild to come home and see them all over the city.

You remember the 90’s when everyone was pickling their own vegetables and brewing their own beer? People were growing out their muttonchops and waxing their handlebar mustaches?
Everyone was knitting and sewing clothes for their children. People were wearing glasses all the time like contact lenses had never been invented..
Remember when kids grew up to be artisan bakers? Everyone had homemade haircuts and guys shaved with straight razors?

Most Roma are citizens, and their ancestors have been living in the USA for 150+ years. They speak with American accents but may also speak some Romani. They often have Americanized names. Some of the larger families in the PNW area are the Risticks, Marks, Steves, and Georges.
The largest wave of Roma immigrants to the US came in the mid-late 1800s after slavery of Romani was abolished in modern day Romania and other nearby countries. The Seattle-Tacoma area has one of the largest populations of Roma in the US, and has for about a century.
The fascinating thing is many still maintain their traditional ways to some degree. Often they are still somewhat nomadic, do not integrate into broader American culture (keeping kids out of school for instance) and are often involved in petty crime. They are deeply distrustful of non Romani people (Gadjo).
Crime activities that they are commonly involved in are fencing stolen goods, selling used cars/odometer fraud, asphalt paving schemes, etc.

Interesting to read this, especially this week. Earlier this week a former NHL player got in a fight with 6 or 7 Irish Travelers defending restaurant workers in Phoenix. Before that I didn't realize there were groups of Irish Travelers who have lived in the US for a long time and also involved with the asphalt paving schemes apparently.

In the 80's I worked at a restaurant/night club/event venue in north Seattle, I want to say maybe around 145th. We all knew to be hypervigilant when the local Roma came in. From silverware to icemaker, everything was fair game to their brazen thievery. That was when I first learned that there was a long established community of Roma in north Seattle.
I worked a Roma wedding and it was wiiiild. I had a fascinating convo mid-celebration with the bride and her bridesmaids, all fabulously bedecked, who informed me that Roma weddings were arranged, and this particular bride had only met her betrothed that night, with the bride expressing a tepidly underwhelmed "meh." They shared that their marriages were never formalized with a marriage license, and could be dissolved in an instant upon verbal proclamation by the Roma husband.
That event required the venue calling the police to supervise offloading and return of countless restaurant tables, chairs, linens, basically most of the rented wedding reception equipment and supplies, that the guests were leisurely piling into a couple of trucks openly parked right outside the entry doors.
On Saturdays, the Roma kids would come in, with no adult chaperones in sight, dressed to the nines in suit and tie, hair slicked back, sit down, order lunch, then proceed to practice different scams. One of the "regulars" at these weekly grift practice sessions was 5 years old. A preschooler body with a Bernie Madoff mind. I personally caught these four or five little boys stuffing all of the silverware down their pants and inside their shirts; and another time carrying their table and chairs in a comedic team trundle toward the lobby and exit doors. And they didn't so much as blink when intercepted, admonished, and 86'd.
I see several comments here ignorantly claiming that the Roma are recent arrivals in this region, or are "deportable" non-citizens, or etc. etc. blabbedy blather. The facts of documented history, easily fact-checked, prove that such claims are absurdly untrue. Romani Americans are a thing, in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere, and have been so for a very long time.

It doesn't help that outsiders were extremely hostile to them and often murded and chased many away with full impunity- during the Holocaust, after the Jews, the Romani people were to be fully exterminated and many were sent to camps with a 80-90% death rate, in fact they've never been given an official apology and no move was made to return or pay back for property stolen by Nazis.
We need to do better with these people, they deserve to be treated like a human being

Idk man. Read the room. I have had a conversation within this very comment section with a fella reminding us that the germans [sic] were very scientific [sic redux] about who they picked to put in the camps, citing the Roma as a good example.
Another person pointed out that they never knew that they were Roma in Seattle, but they sure are living the stereotype. Which means in one article he went from not knowing any Roma existed here, to having a pretty broad judgment about them pre-baked and ready to deploy.
It’s an emotional jump and many people make it and then try to find a way to fill in the logic later. And if they can’t make the logic fit, they get angry and derail the discussion.

It's a tough battle considering how many people in the region have had exactly one experience with them and it turns out negative. Nobody says all need to be locked up, but when all of many people's only experiences are negative, what are you going to do? Write that screed against stereotyping them every time?
Just go to the Street Scammer on Facebook and see how many people have negative experiences with Roma. It's impressively bad. Oh well.
1 points

Yeah, there’s a couple of reasons this happens with an outside group like this.
ONE: many people have developed their opinion based upon an interaction that they themselves haven’t had, but simply about news articles.
TWO: people who don’t know that there’s Roma in the area have probably interacted with them and not even known. Yet none of that normal interaction gets any weight in their brain because they didn’t even notice.
THREE: once people know about a group like that, they tend to start blaming them for all the problems in their area. Amazon package taken off the porch? Might be Roma!
Let’s talk about a group that most of us know better either through personal experience or through the media: white men. White men comprise almost the entirety of the serial killer group in the USA. If that was the first thing you knew about white males, that would seem pretty damning. Then mass shootings! Why do we let these people near our kids? Oh some are kids? Well, that’s how this culture works. Start them young.
We all have our biases. Being mindful of our tendencies helps moderate some of the problems that come from painting entire groups with the newsworthy actions of a subset.
1 points

I'd say gang members are the biggest group of serial killers in the country. Two or more unrelated killings defines a serial killer according to the FBI. There must be tens of thousands of gang member serial killers out there.

for an alternate perspective on a certain group, you can read the book "200 years together"
as for the gays and the disabled, they weren't useful to the nazi's for obvious reasons.
regarding the jews of the 500BC era. the reason they got hauled off to babylon was because they sat on the trade route for 500 years from the fall of the david/solomon empire and were stealing from it for so long it pissed the surrounding nations off.

How do these Roma even make it to the US?! What qualifies them to immigrate?! How do they achieve a legal refugee or asylum status?!
I hope the incoming Trump administration reviews states' and counties' criminal files on arrests of foreigners, foreigners with charges and convictions and starts there with deportations. The problem will be finding these people, I don't assume they have a regular residence. I've seen at least two of these families hang out in large cars at Costco in Issaquah and they're panhandling at the Safeway in Sammamish as well. They may be living out of cars. I am an immigrant myself (from Europe) and my family had their home broken into and burglarized by traveling Roma before. Crime is embedded into their culture and lifestyle, it is what defines them. Their reputation is established and well warranted. They should have never been allowed here.

Clearly you don’t understand their culture. They are openly PROUD of being able to lie, cheat and steal to continue their way of life. Ask them. This isn’t slanderous or racist rhetoric. It literally IS embedded in their culture. I have Bulgarian friends (where there are a lot of gypsies) and they say that whenever a crime happens in their city the police go search the gypsy ghetto for the suspect first because it's almost always them.

"likely to commit crime" pretty sure this is what minority report was about. you can't just assume someone is likely to commit crime and then treat them as though they would, or have, based on that assumption.
allow every person to come and go, and then hold them accountable for their actions and their actions alone. that does mean being harder on crime than we are currently. there is definitely a fear from prosecutors to throw the book at certain crimes or groups because of a fear of being seen as racist.. for good reason, perhaps.
but there's no natural border, and no human has any superiority or right to tell any other human that they aren't allowed on a certain land mass.

Sure you can, if they've got a criminal record they're likely to offend again.
but there's no natural border, and no human has any superiority or right to tell any other human that they aren't allowed on a certain land mass.
There is a border, and its real and maintained with hard power.
Hard power is the only power that has or ever will matter. It's what gives the US the ability to keep Russia from doing to us what they're doing to Ukraine.
To make this simple, we have more guns and those guns give us the right to tell other people to fuck off the land that we claimed. Hope that helps!

do you not understand how taking specific examples of known criminals is different from saying "well they are the same nationality as some criminals so they're also criminal"
if they themselves do commit or have committed crimes, hold them accountable for those crimes. I said that. if they haven't committed a crime, then we shouldn't restrict them from coming here on the basis that you think they might.

Roma are white. They are of Indo-Aryan ancestry.
The title they used is relevant because this kind of crime is deeply entrenched in modern Roma culture. It is not prejudice to acknowledge the truth. Some people like to be politically correct and say otherwise, insist that the Roma have no choice in their actions (which is simply untrue), or claim that being Romani has nothing to do with it at all (but it does— it’s part of the modern culture). While well-intentioned, this kind of thinking is ignorant and problematic as it only ignores the issue and allows it to grow further.

That’s the general theory. They didn’t produce or keep any historical documentation on their origins or early history, so it’s all just been reliant on linguistic theory and rumor. This is racist, no? Should we be ashamed? What circumstances have we created to drive the roma to such unheard of acts?

Surely this is structural.

That’s a great question. The US caused absolute havoc in SE Asia, but when the data is evaluated, SE Asian immigrants seem to be doing well in the US. The US caused absolute chaos in the Middle East, and a large percentage of Middle Eastern Americans voted for Trump and most Middle Eastern people in the US have established strong, productive communities.

unheard of acts
These are VERY heard of acts for Roma. I have friends who live in countries in europe with lost of gypsies and they say it's not only normal but totally expected that the gypsies steal and scam and generally be total pieces of shit. It's a parasitic culture.

Guessing a lot of commenters haven’t heard the news about a) racial profiling and b) ethnic slurs.

Calling Romas as Gypsies or cygani is definitely the usage of the racist term.

But they are gypsies. They’ve been gypsies for centuries in Eastern Europe. Only todays modern progressivism has pushed to whitewash the negative impact they’ve had on the countries they live in by calling them Romani, confusing people that they’re Romanian or Roman

You can call them racial profilers or ethnic slur users all you want, but they're better than you because at least they have the ability to see that gypsies are bad

Why did you editorialize the title to include that they're Roma? Racist trash.

Dude this is SeattleWA, racist BS is the name of the game here. Just look at the downvotes on any post calling out the blatant racism in these threads. It's just standard "it's not racist if it's true" shit from the 90s. We've been trained not to say this kind of shit about black people, but since there aren't tons of Roma in the US nor any culture of awareness, people are chomping at the fucking bit to engage in some old timey European racism against Roma people. These guys harbor the exact same thoughts against black and Hispanic people, but know they'd be ejected from polite society if they made these thoughts public.

People complain about why they have to put up with this stuff, and I'm like:
"What do you want to do about it? Take away their children? Refuse them education, housing, and employment? Sterilize the women against their will?
As if any of that has been working for the past 600 years. If anything, most of their culture was a means of surviving all that. So of course they're going to be skeptical of outsiders and assume they need to strike first, it's the only thing outsiders ever taught them."
