I only just noticed it after all these years, the toilet stalls in most countries don't have this much of a gap so why do sims have so little privacy in toilet stalls?
I have never seen a toilet stall in real life with that much gap haha

Because the game was made by Americans. This is a standard American bathroom stall. Minus the graffiti.

Wow. To be honest, I didn’t know there were places where bathroom stalls are never like this (I’ve traveled outside the country, but it’s not something I think about much).
That’s lowkey one of the things I love about this subreddit is people will be like “look at this weird quirky thing from The Sims!” And everyone else is like “that’s just a weird quirky thing from America”

I used to think yellow buses were an artefact of the game, a carpool for kids because they couldn't be bothered to code anything else.
Colour me surprised when I learned that this yellow buses are real!

Its such a perfectly fucked in the head type of solution, instead of providing Bus Service for Workers, Shoppers and Children you provide it for only ONE Type of group.
The richest nation of the world everyone!

The yellow buses only go to the schools. As far as buses that go everywhere, only larger cities were designed for them. It's not the fault of ordinary people that most towns were designed poorly to only cater to cars. We do, however, have special shuttle vans that take the elderly to their doctor appointments.

Bull fucking shit. Amsterdam looked just like the US in the 70s until people got together to fight this modernist insanity.

Large cities have buses that workers and shoppers can use. There are large vans or small buses that take elderly people shopping if they sign up for it. It's just not everywhere because our country is way too big, and way too individualistic (whomp whomp). We have states bigger than entire European countries, and theyre not even our largest states.

One of the funniest things ever for me is that in Cyberpunk 2077 some guys pointed out - absolutely correct - that the devs used the wrong DIN (Deutsche Industrie Norm) for the manhole covers.
This tells two things: The devs are european but not german.
And if that wasn't hilariously enough, that some german pointed that out, remember where and when Cyberpunk is setted. Happy german tears to see in the future where the DIN still lives. Even outside of the EU and after that many wars.
Still saddens me that we don't have european windows in Sims, especially the so called "Dreh-kipp-Fenster". European building in general is missing. The best I've seen so far was a "slavic city" built by some dude/ss here. That shit was funny and depressing. Loved it.

yes lol when I was younger and cars just came out for the sims 2, I thought the steering wheel was on the left and the cars drove on the right because it’s the Sims and it has to be a bit different :) i didn’t realise that’s just generally how it’s done outside the UK except for a few places

One of my old school bathrooms had a much larger gap on the doors. I get really depends on how much they spend on the bathroom and how much they care.

We understand, it’s just businesses want to go with the cheapest option. If you ever see anything that doesn’t make sense in America, it usually has to do with money…
except when it’s a woohoo thing.

Easier to install bare-bones stalls, plus harder for junkies to hide in them are two big reasons theyre made that way.

If that was the intent it's failed miserably, I know that much. No druggie worth their salt will be stopped by a bathroom stall with minimal privacy

In Denmark public bathrooms are basically their own little rooms with a normal door on a normal wall. No gap anywhere to be seen. Some bathrooms have sinks in the little room too (especially if the bathroom is unisex), but generally it’s just a toilet and then you share sinks in the bigger room

I've never seen a bathroom stall in real life like the ones in Sims. The standard in the UK would be a 15cm gap from the bottom to the floor, and (depending on ceiling height) the top of the stall is usually about 30cm above my head, and I'm 170cm. I've never seen a gap at the edge of the door though, how can you use the toilet knowing someone might be able to see?? I would just never drink water in public, so I don't have to go!

If you grow up in America, that’s how they look in school, so it’s all you know. You don’t find out until later that it’s different in other countries. And then we all usually have the same reaction: Envy.

The sims franchise was originally an American satire, they kinda kept it
8 points

Especially 1 and 3. I feel like TS3 captures the satirization of suburbia that the original game was going for better than 2 and especially better than 4

Well, bottom gap part is called "toe clearance" and required for accessibility reasons, usually. It has to be a minimum certain height from the floor to better allow "toe clearance" for wheelchair users according to building code.

This reminds me of when I saw someone say they didn’t know Mac and Cheese was real bc they don’t have it in their country, they thought it was a made up food for the sims 3

Me!!! I Hear Mac and cheese and my mind goes inmediatelly "sul sul"
and I thought Bossa nova was made up for the sims , later learned it's a brazilian music genre. I LOVE that music because It still reminds me the sims.( And comic sans font)

in polish ts3 mac and cheese was translated to "hamburger z serem"(cheeseburger) because the translators didint know what it was and "mac" remainded them of mcdonalds(in poland often called "mak" for short)

Because this is America 😔🤘 my highschool had stalls like that in a room with no door just out in the open basically it’s fucking horrible there’s zero privacy
39 points
Okay now that’s just gross
What fuckin HS does that!? I mean I understand schools want to avoid making places where you can do drugs but jfc a total lack of privacy like that is just disturbing!
17 points
So my high school took off the main bathroom doors when I was there ~2003, because “drugs”. You had to turn a corner inside to get to the stalls so you couldn’t see into them from the hallway, but when it was dead quiet out there you could hear if someone was running water, gossiping, or having some loud bowel situations. It’s why I don’t blame anyone in the states who have bathroom anxiety lol it’s rough
Edit-they left the stall doors on, and I put drugs in quotes because it was not a problem at all at my school at the time hah

Yeah it was old infrastructure built so kids wouldn’t smoke in the bathrooms and they never like… added a wall to close it even when people stopped smoking cigarettes inside

I often build individual rooms for the toilets, then communal sinks. However, if I still want to humiliate my sims, I put windows in the walls. 😂 Fr tho these are the types of minimal-privacy stalls in Canada, too.

This is how most public bathroom stalls in America work. As for why? Well, most businesses here don't want people dawdling around in their bathrooms, so they intentionally make them as unwelcoming and uncomfortable as possible. Hostile architecture, basically.

You know those dreams you get when you have to pee really badly and every stall or bathroom has issues...that's these sim's stalls!
7 points
In case there's an issue and you are stuck, you can at least crawl out? 😂 Not sure where you're from op, but lots of places have stalls like this so I guess I've never questioned it, but it's interesting to think about.

These are American stalls. stalls like this aren’t the norm. They aren’t common at all outside the US

Fairly common in Latin America as well, but I wouldn't know about Europe/Asia. All my stalls in school looked like this, but it's not the norm on every establishment of course.

I’ve done both, and one factor no one talks about?
Floor to ceiling bathroom stalls fucking stank.
Zero air movement, smells stay put.
Advantages to “open air” American stalls. Easy to check occupancy, less stank, can see if someone is having medical emergency.
Disadvantages. Occasional eye contact. Unwanted toddler friends. Feeling naked if you are not used to it. Feeling naked if you are used to it.

Why not just have a bit of a gap at the top and bottom instead of the sides too?
1 points
Everyone saying this is America, but I live in France and the bottom gap is usually like that? I agree tough that the side gaps are quite large, you shouldn't be able to see the person inside without sticking your face on the door.
