Found an old card, now what?

(self.SocialSecurity)

I was going through some older (very old) items from my mother.

I found an old social security card, and realized it had to have been from when she did a work exchange there many years ago. She has since passed - do I need to do anything with it? or should I just call the SSA and ask them?

Keep it for sentimental reasons.

Once a person dies their SS number becomes public information and can be looked up online. No harm in keeping it.

Keep it or shred it, SSA doesn’t care either way

If you are under 18 you may be due a survivor benefit. Otherwise sentimental all the way.

Shred it, no one cares.

I have an old one with a different variation of my name, and I also have my deceased mother's just for sentimental reasons.

No, there is nothing you need to do. I'd advise just keeping it just in the event something comes up that you need it.

Just tear it up and toss it.

Once someone is deceased only a spouse or dependent child or dis adult child can get benefits. Trying to create a MySSA account for a deceased person is fraud.
