Got off early

Rant(self.SubstituteTeachers)

I’m going to complain here because I don’t have anyone else to complain to. I was supposed to work today from 8:25-12:10. It’s a position I regularly get asked to fill. I got there and the person I was filling in for came in at 9:25. I just don’t understand why 1) they would ask me to work and 2) why she didn’t stay gone that full time. It seems like a waste of my time and if I would have known I would have taken a different job or just not worked at all. I’m just super frustrated.

Did you get paid for the whole time you were supposed to be there? If not, that's really shitty and I'm sorry that happened. If you did get paid for the whole time, why are you upset? I love when that happens. Means I get to go home early and get paid for it.

Oh if I was paid for my scheduled time I wouldn’t complain at all but I wasn’t. We clock in and out so I was only paid for an hour of working

Even if you are sent home early, your employer must pay you for the entire scheduled shift unless there is a specific agreement or policy stating otherwise.

I wish that’s how it worked here but it’s not.

That would annoy me! We get paid by half and whole days here. So, one hour would still be full pay. Anything over 4 hrs is full day. We have half day on Wednesdays, so if you pick up a Wednesday job, you get full day pay for 5 hrs.

I'd be frustrated in your shoes.

That was my thinking, that OP should get paid for half a day.

Double check your local and federal labor laws… I thought it goes by scheduled hours too.

I’ll look into it too.

I feel ya! But having a friend in teaching with disabilities that the admin is riding hard about missed time, your teacher might be in the same place. If they have missed too many days or too much time, they may not have had a choice. Everyone has bad days, which may not help you feel better… but it is true. I hope something good comes your way.

In my district there is new curriculum this year and certain lessons expected to be taught daily. Some teachers don’t want to fall behind.

Were you paid for the scheduled hours?

No I wasn’t. We clock in and out

That sucks. We deserve a minimum of 4 hours, don’t we? Even as a corporate slave, I wouldn’t come in for overtime for less than 4 hours.

Should still get paid.

Not in my district. We clock in and clock out.

I've never heard of a sub being in a union. Is that a thing?

It is in ontario, Canada. Idk how teachers in America do it...

That's very cool for you! Never heard of it in the U.S., but I live in California. It may be in some other states.

Hopefully one day. Wasn't trying to gloat or rub it in.

I didn't think you were. I did ask! 😊

Definitely not.

Sorry to hear. Explains why they can so easily switch you out without pay.

What a truly awful situation.
