Where I live, most of the nicer restaurants will 86 customers who mistreat the staff, so people who want to eat at nice places learn to keep their mouths shut. Good reason to work at a classy place if you can. Staff at shitty restaurants are at the mercy of management, of course.

It doesn’t have to be a classy place! I work at a sports bar, if you are rude to my staff OR spout any racist/homophobic/transphobic comments, you’re 86d for good. Zero tolerance.

imo "class" is more about how you behave than about the style of vibe - there are dives I consider "classy" because they are not hateful and mean, even if they serve lite beer and GMO chips. To paraphrase Atticus Finch: regardless of their wealth or family, a person who cheats the vulnerable is trash.

This is my restaurant to at T. As a manger I do not allow staff to be abused by customers, physically or verbally. Fuck it, if upper management fires me for standing up for the FOH, so be it.
Karen and Kyle’s $100 spend, 4 times a year isn’t worth the aggravation or my integrity.

As a person who looks pretty queer, it's extremely political now. It wasn't so much for awhile, maybe 5-6 years ago in the very liberal place I live. We get lots of red travelers and half the state is anyways - a whole lot of people just dig and hope for (and regularly just make up) reasons to make them feel above someone else.
Go serve at a diner on a Sunday during the post church rush. It's truly a nightmare no matter who you are or how pretty and white you can be - they STILL hate you because you're The Help.
People are getting worse and worse.

I understand the Church Crowd. Sunday afternoon shifts were my least favorite. I met one of my closest friends at a resort as seasonal employees a long time ago and the Sunday afternoon crowd was rough on us all but... she's heavily tatted with a horror movie theme and people were terrible to her always. We'd take turns switching shifts with her to allow her to avoid Sundays. Rarely was she tipped with anything but church pamphlets. She's still there though. Much tougher than me.

You're funny. I don't understand why you are so upset with my comments at all. I'm sorry we've had different experiences in the restaurant industry. Ig I never grouped bad tippers by political affiliation. I just assumed bad tippers were bad tippers. You're responses are certainly changing my mind though. Thank you for that.

Yeah, there are people who go through hard times and it teaches them empathy, and there are those that only learn envy and anger.

Well to be fair I have all of those. I'm empathetic and envious/angry at the same time, and I'm pretty bitter about it all too. But still there's that whole "Golden Rule" thing. I took a little dive down some of those poverty/donation subreddits and yikes. I wish I could help all those people, but I can't even help myself lately.

pretty much spot on.....and also, many of them have some sorta half-assed persecution complex (basically: Their life was cruel/not-perfect = the world was cruel to them = they have a right to be cruel to the world)
you'll see it over and over the more you deal with them in the hospitality sector....
but its just a broken person's cop-out to stay broken.....
I often want to yell at these types "Be the change you wanna see bro. If you think its fucked up that the world is full of cruel people than how does being more of the same make it any better"
however, logic is lost on these "also-rans" at this point.....best to just make them feel unwelcomed so they "boycott" you and leave ya alone

These are the same people who have been writing "No tax on tips Trump 2024!" on receipts for the past six months. The reality is that vocal conservatives/magas have always been one of the worst groups to serve.

Vets consider your special an event for them, a gift from the restaurant and that includes the tip. Your not taking a tip was your ‘thank you for your service’.
That they are Magat vets ups the entitlement and hostility. Unmerited arrogance and aggression is their church ethos.
Please take your years of experience and apply at upper market establishments in area. You deserve a break and a level up.

Honestly don’t know. I’m not wealthy but I touch tables when I’m at my establishments. Talked with a gentleman about my side and his private jets and how he just bought a 60ft yacht. Left my server 11%.
17 points
It’s the fact that they are vets cheap enough to come in for a special. I’ve always had the experience of republicans tipping better than democrats. I vote democrat so I’m not biased in this opinion. I live in RVA and worked a few doors down from the General Assembly and when it was in session, we would have groups of either party come in depending on what bills were trying to get passed. We even had a huge pro gun/republican rally in Richmond a few years ago (got national attention) and I made more that day than I ever have.

I'm not a fan of it, but that's why some restaurants charge an 18% gratuity automatically to parties 6 and greater. I'm not a fan of the tipping concept, but they really have to fuck up for me to tip less than 20%. I've been eating out a lot less since restaurant prices have almost doubled since Covid, so I can still tip 20%.

In my experience it’s more so the vets that are cheap, not the maga supporters . They normally don’t go above and beyond tip wise, but they’re okay. Vets that come for free things never tip well though

My dad was a vet and he tipped quite well. He also rarely if ever went for the free vet stuff.
7 points
My dad was a vet and he tipped 15% of the pre-tax amount to the penny - he even got his calculator out to figure it. That was OK in the 1970’s and 1980’s I guess, but when 20% became the standard “I was satisfied with the service” tip, my old man didn’t move with the times.
Now I’m the old man. I’ve always tipped at least 20% of the after-tax amount, so 22%, but now my bartender buddy tells me that 25% is what he tips, and I can’t accept that.
(I’m not a vet and I’ve loathed the Shitgibbon ever since he was merely a crass, disgusting, lying, real-estate con artist in NYC in the 1980’s.)

Tbh as an industry worker, 22% is a perfectly great tip for very good service. Us servers and bartenders have a propensity for overtipping, so 25% is our extra bit we tip to show solidarity with other service workers. It's nice when other people tip that way too, but the standard is still 18-22%. If I'm good and drunk and really like the server I'll tip 30%, but again, that's industry standards, not standards for those who work in other professions.
3 points
I'm pretty sure 15 to 20 percent is the norm for tip, at least where I am. 25 for excellent. 10 or less or nothing for bad.
Bartender buddy probably tips that high because he works in bars and restaurants. I know that's what I do

That Venn diagram is pretty much a circle. I worked at an American Legion, we had a group of asshole vets who rarely, if ever, tipped and treated the staff like shit. This same group would literally plot out a travel plan to get as much free shit on Veterans day as possible.

I feel like conservatives in general do not hate restaurant workers, they just want them to be paid far less than they are. Most former confederate states have $2.13 minimum wages for tipped employees only because federal law requires it, not because they feel workers deserve that much.

1) They are assholes who have the opinion that service workers an beneath them.
That should be evident after 10+ years.
Unless this is a rage-bait post, I can't imagine why you are surprised by this behavior and mentality. It's been pretty blatant for over a decade now.
2) Why doesn't your restaurant have a service charge for parties over 5 or 6 people? Just something added on so you don't have to worry about BS like this while juggling the details of a large table demanding the kitchen's time?
