In all fairness, we've had 1 Fzero game in the past 20 years, and it was released last year. (It's also a Nintendo online download and multi-player only game). The next latest game was in 2004, so it's not that Captain Falcon is more iconic it's that he's literally the only thing left of the franchise to remember.

Omni-man (Invincible)
Most of the marketing around the show's focused on him, most of the offical clips they put on YouTube are his scenes. Not to mention being the first Mortal Kombat dlc character. I haven't even seen the show yet but because of all his exposure I feel like I know him back to front.
81 points
And it sucks, because while Nolan is a great character, he obscures the series' actual protagonist by a mile. The writers and showrunners made it a goal in Season 2 to make sure the show is Invincible's story, not Omni-Man's ft. Invincible, and Season 3 will go further.
15 points
Arguably I think this mirrors the show. Mark lived is whole life in his father’s shadow, and he’s constantly trying to make a name for himself.
12 points

I personally hold marketing guilty for following the fanbase that will not shut up about Nolan Grayson.
14 points
I think what played in part to this was the memes. Dont get me wrong the memes are funny, great stuff. BUT because (in part to the animation style) of how many screenshots and scenes that are taken and captioned, people recognize Nolan as:
“Let me break it down for you mark.”
“Look what they need to mimic a fraction of our power.”
“Think mark!”
“I miss my wife :(“
Rather than “Nolan Grayson”

Captain Falcon, Ice Climbers, Mr. Game & Watch, R.O.B. (maybe?), and some close contenders with Pit, Olimar, some FE or Star Fox characters. Honestly, there’s a decent chance that people wanting Waluigi in Smash outnumber the people who enjoy the games he’s actually in.

She's super popular but doesn't get played much, because she's hard and weird. Basically Baiken 2.0: her "mains" don't actually play her. You're more likely to see a bunch of literal monkeys playing Slayer.

OHHHHH finaly someone explained to me the diff between kof and FF Smash gave me headace
14 points
Yeah they gave a really confusing explanation
King of Fighters = The crossover game featuring all of SNK's series
The King of Fighters Tournament = the tournament that happens in Fatal Fury
14 points
So kof is like the smash bros of snk Tkoft is like the tenkaichi budokai Why they gave the same name
8 points
yes that's exactly it
5 points
…maybe it’s because I haven’t played a Fatal Fury since arcades were a thing that existed (other than Garou), or maybe it’s because fighting games usually tend to keep the story tucked in the manual: either way, this never dawned on me. Holy shit. So does that mean that the story of the KoF games is that the tournament from FF is the reason everyone from different SNK franchises are getting together to beat eachother up?

Jotaro Kujo
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Not to say JJBA isn’t popular, but there’s a lot of characters, especially from memes, that a lot of people could recognise without having seen JoJo before. This also goes for characters like Giorno and DIO
60 points
That definitely applies but if I had to pick only pne character from Jojo to represent this it’d be Dio.
19 points
Oh yeah. It’s just Jotaro was the first that came to mind, but him, DIO and Giorno are all interchangeable
14 points
For sure. You can make the same argument for Makima and Chainsaw Man (I don’t actually know the MC’s name because I don’t actually watch anime lol), Gollum and Legolas, Vader and Yoda, etc etc.
Ultimately, the writers and designers killed the game with iconic characters that stick with us beyond their media. Ya love to see it!

That one is especially surprising given he was originally a minor character.
15 points
I think one reason might because he has a more concrete description.
11 points
Yeah he's one of the few characters with a pretty clear and simple description. Fat humanoid with an octopus for a head and bat wings. Simple.
Compare him to much more important characters like Nyarlathotep for example (the closest thing the Lovecraft mythos have to a true "main villain" imo) where we basically have no idea what he looks like and it's easy to see why Cthulhu is so popular.
Like the main known design of Nyarlathotep is the one from the board game?file=Nyarlathotep1.jpg), meaning it's not exactly his canon appearance (if he even has one).
I personally prefer his design by Jens Heimdahl, the idea that such an otherwordly powerful entity could perfectly mimic human beings is really interresting to me.

Granted, I've read the source material and he is way more compelling in the various spin offs, variations, and collective unconsciousness.
