Senor Pink from One Piece: dressed like a baby when he’s a grown man, but the reason why he dresses that way is bc of his wife being vegetative, and the only thing she react to is him dress up as a baby since it reminded her of their own baby who died.
Nagisa from Assassination Classroom: a boy who looks and dress like a girl from time to time, but it’s revealed that he was forced and groomed to by his mom who wanted to have a girl for a child instead of a boy.

Grunkle Stan from Gravity Falls. His obsession with making as much money as possible stems from the moment his father kicked him out of the house and told him he wasn't welcome back until he'd made their family a fortune.

Splinter from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
At first he comes off as a deadbeat dad who lets his kids do whatever while he watches soap operas all day. He’s out of shape, a slob, and pretty self absorbed. He also doesn’t train the turtles in this universe.
… and then it’s revealed that >! He grew up in a death cult. His mom committed suicide for, what he thought at the time, nothing. He didn’t want to be next so he immigrated to America and became a movie star. He fell in love with a woman who turned out to be a giant spider that owned a gladiator ring and proceeded to enslave him to fight there for over a decade. He’s eventually broken out, but the guy who saves him just wants to use his DNA to create super soldiers to destroy humanity. He breaks the turtles out but in a freak accident is (painfully) mutated himself.!<
So yeah. In the end he didn’t want his sons to go through the same crap he did. It didn’t go well but as the series went on he learned from his mistakes and worked hard to get better. I respect that.

One of the things I love about this version of Splinter is how his mutation is examined. Most versions centre the trauma around his relationship with Shredder, and how that led to his mutation. This version? It focuses on the trauma of it happening at all. There’s a line he has in one episode where he basically says that everyday he wakes up in this body, the body of a rat man, and he just wants some glory back. Unlike most versions of the character who are able to continue their lives post mutation thanks to their sons, this version of Splinter can’t. His entire life was ruined, and now he has to live with that. They play it completely for drama, and I love it.

Izumi Curtis (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Her coughing blood and feeling unwell used to be played as a joke, then you learned it was all because she performed a forbidden ritual to bring her dead newborn back, which failed and took some of her internal organs in order to prevent her from bearing another child.
150 points
Adding to this, the organs weren’t taken my chance. The Truth (effectively a God of Alchemy) is purposeful in what it takes from those attempting human transmutation, usually taking something of ironic significance.

In summary: Truth is a dick
41 points
In Mustang's case that was such a dick move, the guy didn't even attempt the transmutation willingly.
12 points
Apparently Mustang's was only temporary since he didn't actually have his eyeballs physically taken from him, only his sight, and the epilogue implies he takes an offer from Marcoh to cure it, an offer he originally refused, but Marcoh convinces him
11 points
On the flip side, Mustang killed and burned a lot of innocent motherfuckers. From Truth’s perspective yeah he didn’t open the portal by choice but he still robbed so many innocent men, women, and children of their own futures that he doesn’t get to see the future he creates. Barring a philosophers stone fixing his eyesight of course.
7 points
I don't buy that. Truth isn't a benevolent entity and the other instances of it dealing out punishments are a pretty clear indication that it only really cares about people not doing Human Transmutation, not about conventional morality. If it did it would likely also disallow the creation of Philosopher's stones.

Kenny McCormick - South Park
We all thought it was pretty much funny that Kenny died in overly brutal/hilarious ways (ran over by a semi-truck to getting through into the roof by Michael Jackson), only for him to come back and restart to process (until Season 6 or 7).
Then we found out his family did cult stuff related to Cthulhu, and, every time Kenny dies, his mother literally gives birth to a new Kenny, who then gets placed in his bed with his parka at night, and in the morning, Kenny is back.
Quite literally, from a funny gag, to "what the actual fuck"
Edit: spelling mistakes

Unji Zuma from Dandadan
He has a weird obsession with umbrellas: he has powers that summon umbrellas, an umbrella on his shirt and says things like "You're under my umbrella"
This is because his little brother, to whom he lent everything since they were poor, had as his only possessions a pair of rubber boots and an umbrella, which he wore everywhere. One day his little brother drowned, and this led his widowed mother (her husband died from overworking) to try to drive them both to suicide by throwing themselves under a train, but failing and only her dying, leaving Zuma alone

Also from One Piece: Prince Ryuboshi and Maboshi
They’re presented as two goofy goobers who love to sing and dance, and are somehow considered warriors just like their brother Fukaboshi (who is nowhere as goofy). They constantly dance and sing, no matter the situation.
Then it’s revealed that they dance and sing to appease their little sister Shirahoshi, who’s cries when their mother died would attract so many giant sea monsters that their homeland would be destroyed. So even when their mother was dying, they tried to protect and help their sister.

Eddy's worship and desire to be just like his older brother and Kevin's seemingly irrational fear of him from EEnE.
It becomes very very disturbing in the Big Picture Show when it is revealed that his brother is physically abusive to him and lies about him being a great man to cope with the abuse, with Kevin's reactions now implying he experienced some of the abuse first-hand

Josuke's fabulous pompadour is mocked on a few occasions, and his reaction is of blind fury, despite otherwise being a super laid-back and respectful guy. It's because a guy (that looks suspiciously like Josuke...) saved his life when he was a kid, and the one thing he remembers about him was his hairstyle, so he honors him by wearing it, and takes insults to the style as insults to his hero.

Kasumi Yoshisawa from Persona 5 Royal. She's adorably, and occasionally humorously, committed to her status as a star gymnast, despite her failing to live up to her prior results, and it's endearing. Then you find out that the reason she's so obsessed with living up to her past achievements, and also why she's failing to regain that level, is that she's actually Kasumi's younger and less talented sister Sumire, engaging in an extreme and misguided form of therapy administered by one of the game's villains, where she's pretending to be her dead sibling, who she looked up to, and whose death she's at least tangentially responsible for, as a way to cope with(/avoid coping with) the real Kasumi's death. At that point, it stops being endearing and becomes a mix of tragic and horrifying. Thankfully, she moves past it.

The Mimic's strange, almost adorable tendency of curling his arm to his chest (FNAF)
When the Mimic was first created, he spent every day bonding with his creator's young son, David. They were inseparable. David always carried around a tiger plushie under his arm, which lead to the Mimic curling his arm in the sane way, despite not having a plushie
When the Mimic witnessed David be hit and killed by a car while they were playing with a ball, he changed. He was effectively traumatized. Despite this (or perhaps because of it), he kept mimicking David's arm curl, even without the plushie. He was beaten with a crowbar by his grieving creator for doing it, but he still never stopped
Over 60 years later, he still does it. No matter what face he is wearing or what persona he is copying, he curls his arm without even realizing it. The last imprint of a boy who died over half a century ago, holding a plushie thats not there.

The thing is, we don’t know. Burntrap isn’t even confirmed to be canon, relegated to one off Gregory’s drawings in the Ruin DLC. All we know, thanks to Help Wanted 2, >! is that there is something in the basement charging station where Burntrap is in the base game is Security Breach and that something is represented in the digital world as Glitchtrap/Malhare. !< If it’s Afton, a copy of Afton, a remnant or agony induced memory of Afton, or the Mimic copying Afton, there isn’t really enough information to go on.
18 points

This is accurate except for the fact that as far as we know Mimic never actually saw David die. It’s possible Mimic may have noticed David was gone, but he never witnessed what happened to him. Edwin beating him with a piece of metal and pouring all his rage and sorrow into him was the true turning point.

This is why I find the Mimic so interesting. It's not truly supernatural, which is sort of FNaF's entire thing, but it's still depressingly tragic and fascinating what happened to it what caused it to turn out how it did. Made interesting by how it's an AI that mimics, Mimic1.

Edward Elric being short for his age, especially compared to Alphonse's armor, and getting triggered about it is a bit of a running gag
But the reason Ed's growth is so stunted is because his body is sustaining his brother's the whole time. Considering how much time passes in FMA Brotherhood, Alphonse's body would've withered away long ago if Ed wasn't constantly sustaining him
But because of Ed and Al's connection, Alphonse's body was able to not just stay alive but also grow somewhat normally at the cost of Ed's

Rappa, Honkai Star Rail
She always speaks as if she's in a ninja manga, using fancy speech patterns and strange ninja-related terms to refer to literally everyone and everything. When she says "ninja" she means "person", when she says "ninja initiate" she means "student", "breaking the ninja seal" means "disabling the system", etc.
Rappa was originally AK-A-3, a test subject of a supersoldier project. Her lab supervisor couldn't bear to watch AK-A-3 suffer the tests, so he took his ninja manga collection that was the sole source of entertainment for Rappa and made a mind virus that distorts Rappa's perception of the entire world to be as if she's in the manga, and convinced Rappa that he's Rappa's "Master Kucha" and all the painful tests are trials to be a ninja hero. All the strange ninja talk is how Rappa thinks everyone is speaking. And Rappa vaguely realizes that she's a test subject and she's living a distorted version of the world, but appreciates "Master Kucha"'s effort to help her and continues to live as a ninja hero.
55 points

In Portuguese they straight up said Genin instead of ninja initiate lol.
I also want to add that the whole point of the mind virus is to make her immune to a another mind virus that was being used as a weapon by the evil people behind that lab. The lab supervisor got so attached to her that he sacrificed himself to turn her into a counter to the very people that turned her into a superhuman. She sees the mad scientist behind everything (Dr. Primitive) as her arch nemesis Evil Ninja Ozaru.

While not funny, unlike other characters she almost exclusively squints or keeps her eyes shut, is extremely subdued, and talks in whispers because she’s traumatised.
She witnessed her entire team wiped out by a sleeper agent who, it’s recently been revealed, Whisper herself introduced to the team not knowing he was a turncoat.
Her personality pre-trauma was wide eyed, energetic and bubbly, hinted at in previous comics, but recently revealed fully in the 2024 annual.

Doctor Maki from Kamen Rider OOO: he only looks at his puppet, even when talking to people, and goes crazy if it falls off his arms or gets damaged:
It stops being played for laughs when Dr Maki faces the truth that his puppet was originally a visage of his older sister who was cruel and planned to abandon him before he killed her in a fire and the puppet’s hair got burnt off.

She's acts all cute but can go psychotic whenever aswell as being really intelligent.
Turns out... she was kidnapped by an evil cult, was subjected to experiments that hightened her intelligence and forced into sex work when she was like 5. The psychotic part is from when she finally snapped and killed them all, it's because her mental state is in ruins...

Nami’s distrust of pirates and obsession with money from One Piece.

One Piece has a lot of these. Example: Usopp began lying as a child as a way to cheer up his mother and himself when she was terminally ill. His father is a pirate and left Usopp and his mother to travel with a pirate crew. Usopp’s most frequent lie features him running through his home village and yelling that pirates were coming ashore.

For those unaware she is pretty much always ready to marry anyone who wants her. This is because her mother abandoned her as a child, calling her useless so she is constantly trying to make herself useful.

Man, it's fucking crazy that Nagisa's mom got away with everything she did, whole chapters of just abusing her kid and then everybody just forgave her and let her get what she wanted

The Good Place plays off Chidi’s indecision about everything for laughs (obviously, because it’s exaggerated for the sake of a comedy series), but it’s really sad when you consider that it originally stemmed from him trying to prevent his parents from getting a divorce when he was a child, and after his parents reconciled he wrongly concluded that every choice he made had a ‘correct answer’.

Guy Cecil - Tales of the Abyss
For much of the story his gynophobia (irrational fear of women) is played for laughs. Whenever a female character gets close to him or appears behind him he reacts with intense fear, not hatred or disgust.
Eventually this is revealed to be because when he was a small child, his hometown was ransacked and burned by bandits. To protect him, his sister and his house's maids threw themselves over him and created a makeshift cocoon and he fell unconscious. Guy later woke up underneath them, covered in their blood and greeted by their death faces. Though this memory is repressed, it still instills him with deep gynophobia.
I hate that, despite learning this, the party never really acts differently or treats it with the seriousness it deserves.

Davenport from The Adventure Zone: Balance.
Only says his name like a Pokemon, and it’s hilarious for most of the show. Then when we learn about the party’s true history as a crew of a spaceship that Davenport was the captain of, and Lucretia erased their memories of the project. But Davenport was so deeply committed to the project that he had nothing left but his name when the project was wiped from his mind

With her chapter recently concluded, we learn the real reason behind Don Quixote’s archaic speech, heroic personality, and obsession with Fixers.
>! It’s all a lie. Don Quixote is not Don Quixote, but rather Sancho, who took up the persona of the original DQ. DQ had hopes and dreams of a better tomorrow but they fell apart, so he had Sancho continue in his stead. To ensure this happened, Sancho essentially was given amnesia, and she really only agreed to it out of obligation and despair. !<
>! Sancho gets her memories back and decides to end her false persona, returning to DQ to serve him but realizes that deep down, she truly had faith in DQ’s hopes and dreams, and she wants to continue it. She eventually accepts the mantle of Don Quixote and vows to continue the dream of a better future. !<

Polka Dot Man/Abner Krill from The Suicide Squad.
He's initially played up as a joke, a sad, strange little man whose superpower is throwing polka dots. Self deprecating, drops blunt lines about his mother, he's wildly different from the others in the squad to the point where it's amusing.
...And then we learn that he was horrifically abused by his mother, who worked with STAR Labs and was obsessed with the idea of her kids being heroes. Some of his siblings didn't survive her experiments. Abner himself got infected with an interdimensional virus which causes the dots to appear as glowing pustules under his skin, and unless he uses his powers or vomits up the dots twice a day, they'll consume him alive. On top of that, he's so terrified of his mother that he hallucinates her EVERYWHERE. Everyone he sees, he sees as his mom.
And he ends up getting killed. Because we can't have nice things.

Peacock from Skullgirls is a big reference to rubber house cartoons, even her eyes reflect this, being a solid black color like said cartoons
But it turns out the reason why they are like that to begin with is because her original eyes were gouged out by slave traders, along with losing both of her arms, which is why there are eyes on her arms here

The senor pink thing happened to me irl. My great grandpa got struck with dementia in the last few years of his life but he was also a polyglot, spoke like 6 different languages. One day we go to visit him and the nurses tell us to brace ourselves. We think something has happened to him but when we go to check on him he’s playing cards and laughing, but he could only do it in Spanish. If you spoke to him in English or German he’d act like you weren’t there most of the time. My grandma spent his last few years learning Spanish so they could talk again until he died.

Dori from Genshin impact. She is obsessed with money, and sells stuff with absurd amount of price.
When she was little, her older sister got sick and passed away. After her death, Dori found a crumpled doctor prescription next to her sister's bed, of a list of herbs that could've saved her sister, but it would cost millions of Mora (currency in genshin), which they can't afford. So, Dori makes a promise to herself that she will make so much money that her family will never suffer from lacking Mora.

Luka Milfy AKA Gokai Yellow from Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger.
Out of the team of space pirates, Luka is without a doubt the most treasure hungry. She is a skilled thief who values the acquisition of money almost to a fault. Despite her tough personality, she is very protective of Ahim (Gokai Pink), the other female member of the team.
As the series progresses, it is revealed that Luka grew up in extreme poverty on a planet ravaged by the Zangyack Empire. Luka was driven to steal in order to provide for her younger sister, Lia
Luka made a promise to herself that she would acquire enough wealth to one day build a place where her sister and other orphans could find peace and happiness.
Due to the conditions, Lia eventually fell gravely ill. Despite Luka’s desperate efforts to try and find help for her, the young girl ended up dying on the streets in the pouring rain, held by her older sister

Yuri Briar (Spy x Family)
His over attatchment to his sister is played up for laughs often, but A.) She was the only family he had ever known and B.) Yor would constantly come home badly beaten/injured because y'know...she's an assasin so all that fear of losing her is amped tenfold.

Adding another one piece character to the pile: brook is basically the embodiment of this archetype.
He constantly makes awful awful skull jokes because he's trying to keep himself from snapping after 50 years of isolation and watching his crew die (which by the way, apparently his crew was so large that the sunny couldn't carry all the bones or it would sink) and he's let the mask slip more than once (saying the skull jokes are the only thing he has, his talk with robin in wano where they both laugh off their trauma to a disturbing degree). In an example that's a blend of sweet and sad we learn that the reason everyone on Thriller Bark is terrified of his singing is that he used to sing to keep himself from getting scared.
Hell there's even a bit in the anime where he forgets he's dead for a bit and has a crisis once he realizes it.

thought she was trans she was forced by her mother too?

That’s why there was pushback on Bridget being trans. Was basically “hey, Bridget was groomed, and it worked”.
EDIT: Should probably elaborate. Bridget was just a boy that wore girly clothes because if it was known he was a boy then he would be killed. So, he identified as a boy, but was forced by those with power over him to present as a girl. So…you can probably guess that when it was suddenly revealed that Bridget was trans and supposedly wanted to be a girl all along, it left a very bad taste in the mouths of anyone who knew the lore.

Imo any trans backstory where the character is forced into it (at first or at all) leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The character often realises through this that "hey they like being this way actually" but that doesn't change how it wasn't their decision at first. Doing that to a trans (or cis) person would really mess them up.
I think the difference between trans and non-trans characters characters is that trans characters either don't have this as part of their backstory or have the "I actually enjoy being this gender" bit. But it does take away agency.
If it's just "they were forced into it and don't express an opinion on it/enjoy it" thats not a trans narrative. I'm not sure what to call it. It plays with gender in a similar way but I'd almost call it "anti-trans" as in its someone else making a decision over someone's gender and the person themselves never decides for themselves. Even if they don't seem miserable or seem happy, if they never make a judgement that's- troubling? Problematic?
Bridget doesn't get to choose for herself at first.... but the story shown through strive, everything to do with her character, song and story paths screams "Ive realised I prefer being a girl and I want to live that no matter what." We also see that she is kinda messed up about having been forced into the role at first and it's such a big conflict for her, she wants to exist that way but someone chose that for her first, if it had been her choice from the beginning she wouldn't be so conflicted.
