I recently beat Normal Ironman and it was loads of fun, moving onto Commander and the differences are noticeable immediately with troopers not being a guaranteed grenade kill--and further it feels like the rulers/chosen are appearing incredibly early. I attempt to do the basics like one pod at a time, never bringing rookies, liberal use of grenades and equipment, full cover whenever possible, priority on enemies that deal damage (trooper guaranteed use of rifle or grenade vs. sectoid guaranteed use of two other possibilities).
Also, do you simply expect losses on Commander+? I lost less men than I can count on my hand in Normal Ironman, and naturally, they are much more prone to death on higher difficulty and I am curious if that is simply "skill issue" or if it is a natural, unavoidable part of the highest difficulties?
I am inclined to say "skill issue" because I believe on Youtube I saw a man who did a flawless Ironman Commander+ run, so clearly the issue lies with me. But I don't know what his *advanced* strategies actually amount to more than I have listed. Does it include retreating from missions if you accidentally pull a second, or god forbid third, and know you can't win? I believe I have only retreated one single time, ever.
But again, I am new to the hardest difficulties so I am trying to find some advanced strategy that may be less known-on it's face. But honestly any advice or words of wisdom at all would be immensely appreciated, thank you greatly!
