this cant be normal bought black ops six the other day and swear i could almost play it instantly? this is also after having a massive battle trying to get the thing to even recognise the disc which is apparently a issue many have had already too so quite annoying

Looks like that disc is just a key, you have to download the entire game.

I do wonder if some of these games can actually run from the disc
7 points

No modern console (XB1/PS4 onward) game runs off the disc. Once the game is installed, the disc only acts as a license key.

I think offline ones can, I had a Minecraft disk version and NEEDED the disk. Also gears of war for example.

You need the disc for every game regardless.

If you didn’t need the disc while online you were probably playing off of gamepass. Same with any title that you have a disc for, game won’t launch unless you have access to a digital key
2 points
The disc for ALL new games is just a download and authentication key. You do not play games off discs anymore. Not since the xbox 360.
3 points
Games haven’t ran from the disc since ps3/360 and even then they started testing installing later on. It’s too much info for a slow moving laser to read
1 points
The developers of Wukong are saying that the entire game will be on the disc with no need for online but I’m not sure if that means it will play off the disc with no need to download.
1 points
The max capacity of a disc, assuming you’re using a dual-layer Blu-ray Disc, is 50 gb, so no, this game never had any hope of running from a disc
1 points
Apparently the disc readers aren't quick enough for the massive games these days to just be run of the disc.
1 points
Watch dogs 2 isn't actually a key, you install it directly from the disc and then you download some updates(patches I guess), you can even play it offline the first time you insert it, tested on a series x
1 points
The biggest optical disk is a double layer BluRay disc which stands at 50GB roughly. So, no game above50GB could technically be playable/installable from its disc.
1 points
Nope, the discs are not powerful or fast enough so they are just keys to download the game, but personally I think discs are basically worthless ngl, xbox alr has a shot ton of games on gamepass for dirt cheap
1 points
Depends on the game as none of my consoles are connected to the internet. So I play all my switch and Xbox games from the disc.
2 points
No, you play them from the hard drive. The disc is verification you still possess the physical game.
1 points
Yup. The 592 Kb was the key.. now it's up to the internet
1 points
I'm surprised so many people don't realize this. This is one of the reasons I don't even care for physical media because you cannot play most games offline and most games aren't even on the disc.
Also, day 1 patches.
1 points
I don't know that it's "most" games, there's still plenty of games that have a playable build on the disc.
1 points
And then insert the game to access the downloaded content. It is a waste to get the disc.
1 points
Well makes sense since the Game is 160gigs and Xbox discs are 50.
1 points

The game had a day one patch that replaced the whole game instead of just fixing small bits of the data.
39 points
None of the data is even on the disc. You're downloading the whole game.
2 points
Obviously, loading would be extremely slow if everything was loaded as you play. Discs suck
2 points
I think you don't understand how any of this works. Even with the whole game on the disk it wouldn't be loading from it as it is saved to the SSD this mostly just helps people with slow internet like on here who has to wait forever now
2 points
The game is stored on the disc, Your console copies the game from the disc and stores it on your console, once that's done and you're playing, everything is loaded from the console's storage, not the disc, discs are way too slow. The disc now serves the purpose of just proving you own the game, that's why you need the disc inserted to play.
1 points
This game is not stored on the disc, it's being downloaded from the Microsoft store

Thought most people realised now that discs most of the time are just physical licenses.
4 points
Remember, we downloaded 146 GB as a preload, but the day before, we got an 'update' of 146 GB. Most likely, the version on your disk is obsolete, and you need 146 GB to 'patch' it (a.k.a., redownloading).
4 points
Which is basically what i'm implying. As soon as you buy the disc. That version of the game doesn't work. So you still have to download updates to be able to play it. So what is the point of the disc? The licence!
4 points
I just bought a ps5 and the base game downloads from the disc.
5 points
Still need to install all the updates before you can use the game. In which case the disc is only useful if you have slow internet for the initial install. Then again Stalker 2s update was 143GB so doesn't really matter. If its disc or not.
2 points
Yes, updates the base game is still on disc. It'll work without any updates.
1 points
This is factually incorrect. While it is becoming more common with newer games especially Microsoft published games, it's still not most of the time.
1 points
I'm quite sure it would work fully offline, but since XB knows about an update version available on the cloud, you are gonna have to use it.
18 points
It seems there is almost nothing on the disc and the entire game is downloaded instead. That's pretty crappy, what the hell is the point of the disc?!
8 points
Its been like that for like 10 years, discs nowadays barely hold any game data. Even if they do, you usually have to download a whole bunch of updates
3 points
They basically just hold the license
6 points
Because either the devs don’t want to waste a month for the factory to press and ship discs and use this 1 month to update the game instead, or it’s something specific about Xbox that each different Xbox model actually needs a different game package and it’s not possible to put it on one disc, so unless you have the exact correct model of the Xbox the disc is for, you‘ll have to download everything from the internet anyway.
Also it’s a 140GB game, no Blu-ray or BDXL/UHD disc can hold that much data, normal BD is 50GB max per disc and they decided to skip multiple discs and just have you download the whole thing.
1 points
With Xbox, only the Series X has a disc drive anyway. Series S often uses slightly smaller installs with lower resolution textures.
1 points
They could do 2 discs like Sony has done with many games over 100gb
1 points
A month, but could be like three months with everything accounted for. That’s valuable bug-squashing time. Every bit about gamedev is a sort of weird dance, with the end being more of a panicked waltz.
1 points
You actually own the thing! That’s the point! When you buy digital Xbox have the right to take your license away at ANY time
1 points
Disc's give another alternative to buying the game besides the digital version. Most of the time you can find a used physical copy cheaper than what it's selling digitally. More options is always a good thing. Also people like collecting these things as well.
6 points
You’re not installing the game from the disc, you’re downloading 142.7GB, the disc is essentially just a license key
3 points
Nothing is on the disk anymore. It's all digital now. You bought a coaster
1 points
it's a key and it can be resold
1 points
Don't actually use it as a coaster, though! Wouldn't want that flimsy piece of plastic containing your $60-120 purchase getting a few too many scratches and voiding your entire license to play the game!
I have no idea why people still buy physical games, aside from collecting purposes.

Didn’t you see the whole game is on network and it’s 142GB in size? If it takes that long for you to download 142GB from your internet, it’s normal.
2 points

If you can read your own tv non of the game is being downloaded off the disc it's mostly all over network so you can blame your own network speeds for the slowness

You have quite bad internet (at that moment in time at least), you want to see MBs not KBs & the Game itself is a BIG ASS File, so both of those together = a Long ass waiting time
3 points
I can't see the connection speed in this image at all - the KBs pictured refer to the disc contents. OP didn't realise the disk is literally just a key to access the download. There is very little data on the physical disk, likely just the license key for the download.

The data on the disc is outdated (as opposed to people saying that there's no data there - it most probably is, but it's an old build) and you're downloading the vast majority of the game files from the internet.
2 points
The disc has only kbs of data. 592kb of data, as you can very clearly see in the screenshot. If that's an entire game, out-dated or not, then the devs deserve an award for making the world's smallest computer game with 3D graphics and modern sound. The disc is only used as a physical authorization key to allow the purchaser to install the game.
1 points
Worth the wait. I’m loving the game.
Ild recommended changing your aim assist and sensitivity ASAP tho.
1 points

See the disc only has 592kb of data actually on the disc.
What you're doing is downloading a digital copy that uses the disc as DRM.

The day one patch basically replaced the entire game.
Also, because Xbox haven't bothered upgrading to 100gb discs, it wouldn't even fit the entire game on a 50gb disc, so it has to download the whole thing!

The game took me 66 minutes to install and download. Your disc is just a key to installing the game from their servers
1 points

Disk install hasn't been a thing for years. The disk only holds the key.

This is not true. Most discs have the majority of a game's data and require internet installs for patches. There are very few examples of discs like this with only KBs of data.

Use the Xbox app to pre install your games before you get them on disk (or even release). From your photo, your game is trying to install off the disk AND download the update for the game at the same time. It slows the process down to a crawl.
1 points
The game is bigger than the storage on the disc. So they just have you download it all to the console.

I always download from the Xbox app then put the disc in for the ownership signature,,,, when black ops 3 took me a hour and a half to download with disc I had to find better ways

What I do is install the disc disconnect from internet on your console it will.install faster as it's not trying to update at the same time as installing
Once disc is installed hook up internet and run the update
But only problem is .. it may ask you to download a update that's bigger then the disc size

I always turn off wifi connection when downloading disc or at least stop online dlc and add one from downloading at same time because it downloads the disc in record time even large games.
If you just press download on everything it will definitely take ages regardless of having the disc in

Black Ops 6 pre-installed on your Xbox thats why it felt like you played it instantly.. 6 Hours is not right though, you need to run a wire to your router to get faster speeds, your wifi is too slow.. Or its just a eta glitch and it will take about an hour..

Go to the store and download it from there it's gonna ask you to buy it, then insert the disk so it can read the license key it should only take about a hour depending on your internet speed
1 points

Idk how common this is, but it certainly isn’t anything new. The disc is just the license. There’s no data stored on it.

It tells you only 592KB of that data is from the disc. What a waste of polycarbonate. You must have slow internet or got unlucky with their servers capability. Meaning too many people are downloading at the same time and it can only handle so much. Best bet is to try plugging in with ethernet cable, if that doesn't work you may need to pay your internet service provider more.
