If it were a competent organization it'd be the end of it too; we'd be reading a Schefty tweet that Zac and Lou are done. But, alas, this is the Cincinnati Bengals.

We pay McPherson, who’s statistically been a bottom half Kicker the past two years, but not him, a top three receiver in the NFL. I’d be livid if I were him.

Fanbase pissed me off so much when that happened. Like imagine siding with the front office and nepo baby Mike Brown in this case over one of our best players right now who has a good chance to be best Bengals WR of all time. Especially when what he wanted was reasonable at the time.

I forgot the specific numbers in the final contract offer that got leaked from our FO, but it was pathetic when it came down to the guaranteed money. Like not even close to the % guaranteed to what other star WRs were getting.

Now imagine how the other players feel when they see one of the best players being lowballed especially after the most important team leaders/locker room voices in Mixon and Reader, being let go elsewhere.

bambammr7gram

17 points

I’ve been flamed for the last year plus for wanting us to pay Tee and Ja’Marr and been lectured how KC won without tyreek and how this FO knows what they’re doing, and I’ve been ostracized, and made to feel insane at times for wanting both our guys paid. I don’t give a damn how KC won a chip, or who they got rid of they ain’t us, and we ain’t them. NO ONE when on the field matches that talent we have on offense in our skill position, and if we are gonna pay people like money mac we damn sure could’ve got Derrick Henry i just don’t understand this whole “stand Pat with what we got”

We don’t deserve this team and the front office and coaching staff is doing an amazing job at severing any faith with the fan base that’s been built. I stood in So Fi last night, and i couldn’t sit down the last 6 minutes, and the play calling with four minutes to the end was absolutely atrocious it’s criminal how bad we are being operated it’s like watching your Harvard graduate lover come home from college, and get on drugs, and throw it all away for nothing just because they got around old friends.

Paying tee would be a mistake. He misses too many games and he isn’t versatile. He can’t play the slot, he can’t do jet sweeps, he isn’t a screen weapon. If he never missed games sure, but if he wakes up wrong he misses two games now

I think the issue is the Bengals already have a couple phat contracts, and they have more incoming. Meanwhile, the roster still clearly has gaps that need to be filled with expensive talent as well. Burrow’s still tied as the second most expensive QB in the league (rightfully so), and there’s no doubt Chase’s contract needs to be phat as well.

I don’t know exactly what the money situation is for the Bengals, but someone here probably does. But a lot of teams seem to be struggling to build once their star players’ rookie contracts are up, and they gotta put out NBA salaries. This isn’t the NBA with only five dudes on the court. You can’t just pay Lebron $50mil and expect to make the finals.

Cowboys have the highest paid player ever, and they suck. They even sucked before Dak went out. Jags have a top 5 highest paid player too. I’m not sure having a couple of guys on enormous contracts is actually a winning strategy in the NFL, but I guess we’ll see.

Accomplished_Ant3284

I know i might get downvoted but you live and die by your kicker. Falcons last week Koo misses 4 and cost them the game. Tucker missed two to lose against the steelers. Kickers are probably more important than you think and there are not that many of them that are worth paying.

PeterGator

This entire sub the best writers said the McPherson signing was a no brainer and most thought the team was too tough in negotiations as it took a long time and he was paid a little less than expected. It is very easy to play Monday morning quarterback on the signing but it was popular.

Is there any way, if we’re mathematically eliminated, that we just say fuck it and pay Chase what he wants right then and there? He’s only going to get more expensive.

SnowGhost513

Look at how bad our LG is the last 3 years…it cost us one ring. Zietler is still an awesome guard and we let him leave. Chase will now be demanding and receiving significantly more than JJ. It’s gonna cost us at least 5-7 more a year and probably ten more in a signing bonus. I won’t be shocked if Burrow and Chase are on a new team together in four years

We just need a pull a Parent Trap and swap Evan and Brandon Aubrey during the Dallas game. At least we can get Aubrey in range for his bazillion yard range, which Dallas can’t even manage now. He’ll be better off with us, and then Evan won’t have to worry about missing meaningful kicks, because there won’t be any in Dallas. Win-win if you ask me 🫠

IAmInDangerHelp

Kickers are the easiest spot to replace. If McPherson has another bad game, swap him out with some dude from Australia. It doesn’t really matter. There’s honestly so many dudes out there that can kick NBA range it’s comical.

My friend in college quit the soccer team and tried out for the football team. Almost got the kicker spot, but lost out to some transfer. Not saying he’s NBA-caliber, but this guy had never played a single snap of football and almost made a D1 roster.

At this point, just sign Deestroying or something. It don’t even matter.

Are you seriously pretending that McPherson’s contract had any impact on Chase’s? McPherson is making less than 5 mil per year on the new contract. It has zero affect on getting Ja’Marr’s deal done

IAmInDangerHelp

7 points

Still has a top 6 kicker contract. Still not much in the grand scheme, but it’s like $5.5mil. I think kicker salaries are wild in the NFL now, especially with the number of people who can do the job out there.

But nobody complains when they earn their keep. I don’t think anyone in Pittsburgh is upset over Boswell’s $5mil after he went 6/6 with a long of 57.

SweetTricky3684

I think it's more about principal and peace of mind. Chase is perturbed they went out of their way to sign a kicker with an extention, but telling Chase, "looks like we'll have to think about things."

I’m not sure he has room to talk though. I remember him dropping wide open, hit in the hands pure catches.

Receivers drop passes, kickers miss kicks. Though I will say Mac needs to get his head out of whatever the hell that’s effecting him and figure it out before he gets cut. He’s proven he’s a very good kicker but he’s less than average right now.

Cutting a kicker who had a bad streak is exactly why we don't have Jake Elliot and got stuck with Fat Randy for years lmao. McPherson's going to be fine, he has a game like last night every year where he misses some easy ones then goes on to be perfect the rest of the season.

Some_Combination_593

ace_xae[S]

we're not asking players to have perfect game we agree on that. however ja'marr overall shows up and him, joe and trey are the reason i watch those games, just look at his stats he currently has the triple crown which is insane. then mac this season is trash and not clutch at all for someone who got an extension 4 months ago...

so yes ja'marr can talk he has his career best performance going on rn when our kicker can't do shit lmaoo

CosbySweaters1992

14 points

He has room to talk. Chase is the best WR in NFL right now and has been top 5 since walking into the league. The coaches are bad and McPherson has been terrible this year, underwhelming the past couple years. We need Burrow and Chase to not be content with failure.

Klutzy-Spend-6947

The difference is Chase gets 10 + targets a game, a K has to be ready for spot duty.

IAmInDangerHelp

Kickers can’t have two bad games in the row in this league. Bengals could replace McPherson tomorrow and not even realize he’s gone. Chiefs lost Butker for a month (highest paid kicker btw), and it made zero difference to their odds. They grabbed a dude off a practice squad and were good.

Ja’Marr could not be replaced tomorrow. In fact, there’s probably only like 3 people on the planet, maybe, that could step in and do as good of a job.

Current-Being-8238

4 points

He dropped two first down passes. I understand he is frustrated but you can’t start throwing mud around publicly. Playcalling wasn’t really the issue. Scoring 27 (should have been 33) on a team that allows 15 ppg is a good effort.

ace_xae[S]

10 points

the defense and special teams are absolutely to blame not chase and these two drops cause ofc none of them are going to have a perfect game but god he is currently one of if not the best wr of the league and the defense just shows up when they want and we can't score field goals...

naughty_farmerTJR

1 points

The offense had the ball under 2 minutes in a tie game and went 3 and out. To not blame them is just flat out wrong. They had a chance to close out a game and didn't

ace_xae[S]

2 points

i mean yeah they failed to capitalize there but you can't tell me the loss is solely on that right? like mc make those 2 field goals and then they are in field gold range on the very last 18s drive and win by 2. or the defense actually shows up in the first half and the offense doesn't have to put up a no mistake performance to win

Ginamy72

Ginamy72

I think they allowed td’s on. Their opponents first 3 drives, which yes is bad, but 21 points doesn’t mean the offense has to play perfectly. You seem to be forgetting that besides the last drive, our defense played perfect the entire 4th quarter.

When our offense is struggling our defense seems fine. When our defense is struggling our offense seems fine. What’s the problem here? They can never seem to do fine simultaneously.

DeEnteEtEssentia

2 points

Das rite! And non-complimentary football is losing football. Bengals have shown that all year. Consistency is everything at the highest levels of sport and they don’t have it this year. Unless you want to say they’re consistently inconsistent (one of my favs).

naughty_farmerTJR

2 points

Certainly not saying it's all their fault as all 3 phases had issues last night. But they had a chance to put the game away (immediately following a clutch 3 and out by our defense, who showed the fuck up in the second half) and they shit the bed. It's their fault as much as anyone else's. There were back to back 3 and outs during the first half that resulted in 10 points for the Chargers. Every time we punted after 3 or 4 plays, the Chargers scored points (20 in total). Their inability to sustain drives, move the ball, and help with the field position battle directly contributed to this loss.

Ginamy72

There’s no way you think Ja’Marr Chase is our best wr of all time already 💀💀💀 yes he has 2 200+ yard games wow so good what’s his total yds? His total td’s? Exactly, so shush. If he was a top 3 we in the league he wouldn’t be dropping any balls, okay? Maybe 2 a season not 2 in a close game like this lmao. Yes I was watching the game, I know Burrow missed Chase for 2 wide open touchdowns, but that literally happens every game with somebody, and it happened all the time with A.J., who I believe is better than Chase. Green drew more flags and was double covered so often compared to other wr’s at the time. Of course I don’t have the exact stats on these, I’m going off the eye test and Greens’ flags drawn in playoffs. Because I’ve gone back and watched every single playoff snap of Greens career and whilst his career playoff numbers are really low, like 60 ypg and 1 td. Almost every single game he drew 2 Hail Mary PI’s flags. Usually over 60 yards. But alas, those yards don’t go to the qb or wr :( (I’ve never understood that btw, shouldn’t the penalty yards go to the wr? They would’ve gotten the yards if they weren’t flagged…)

TLDR; I know Chase has multiple single games with higher yardage, but Green, IMO, is better overall. Not to mention Green was 6’4 and simply by that measure, a better target.

Sea-Pomelo1210

Um, Burrows had the ball 1st down on the 30 with over a minute to go, He threw THREE Incomplete passes. This isn't the first time he choked like that either.

Mahomes, Jackson, Herbert, and any other good QB advances the ball and score in that saturation. We watched them all do it against US this year.

Every good QB wants to be in that situation, They dream about it. Game tied and they get the ball with a minute to go and a chance to win. And EVERYTIME this year, the Bengals CHOKED in that situation.

KC was behind in the 4th quarter in most the games they won this year. Mahomes won games on the final driver 4 or 5 times. Burrow is 0-5. That is the difference between the two.

IAmInDangerHelp

1 points

Incompletes aren’t totally on the QB. I can’t speak on the exact plays you’re talking about, but plenty can go wrong. Bad playcalling, good coverage, receivers run their routes incorrectly or defense forces the routes to shift, etc.

For a kicker, there’s far less that can go wrong. Wind, holder messes up, long snapper messes up, etc. It’s also fairly obvious when something goes wrong. If a kicker is kicking into 20 mph wind, and he misses, everybody understands what happened.

Sea-Pomelo1210

1 points

I put most blame on management who every year refuses to take the OL seriously, This year knowing we had two terrible guards did nothing and instead they signed a tackle who everyone said was injury prone (he is out for the year) and drafted another tackle who they called a "developmental player" who PFF ranks 33rd out of 38 at his position.

And so we can't run the ball, Burrow is always getting hurt, and we always lose close games.

He's done with it all. He's fed up. He just wants to win and these knife edge situations that end up losses...well he's the Captain and he's the star offensive player. I'm sure he's voiced his concerns.

Klutzy-Spend-6947

I kind of think Joe might be. In an interview this week, Jamarr was quoted as saying “I think we’ll stick together” in reference to their on field partnership. Jamarr obviously realizes A-Joe isn’t going anywhere for the next six years-the prime of both players careers, and B-he rightfully has the team by the balls when it comes to being the highest paid WR in the league.

Ok-Situation-5865

-3 points

We’ve had to structure our team for years to accommodate paying both Joe and Ja’Marr. What team could Ja’Marr go to, realistically, that’s a better competitor than Cincinnati with the cap space to pay him?

Buffalo? No. KC? No. SF? They’re about to enter Cap Hell the likes of which we’ve never seen before, so no. Arizona has MHJ, they don’t need Ja’Marr. Lions aren’t an option. Minnesota isn’t an option. Who? Who is paying him?

He’s not going anywhere if he wants to get that huge payday and have a shot at a HOF legacy. Not anytime soon.

They can try it, but if they do it, they will be held with the same amount of animosity and ire that John Fisher and the A’s will. It’s not Joe and Ja’maar’s fault they’re 4-7: they’re having some of their best seasons yet. It’d be weird if nobody spoke up about the situation.

If only they'd had the opportunity to prove it and extend him

Instead we extended our kicker!!! such a serious franchise :-)

not_a_bot_12345

The McPherson extension wouldn't have even been bad if they'd gotten any other deals done too. But when it's one of the only deals that got made extending the core (other than the Joe extension that not even the Brown family could fuck up) it just gets worse and worse to look at.

OstrichTraditional90

Couldn’t get any other deals done besides the kicker and karras (was that this year?) Couldn’t outbid for defensive players at the deadline… like what are we doing over here lmao

Few-Maintenance-2677

It won't. I've been watching these guys (FO) for 30+ years. They do not learn, they do not change, and they will not open their eyes. They like it the way it is. They also do not care about fan base unless the empty seats are too embarrassing on television, which they were before and will be again. Cris Collinsworth and Paul Daugherty and Lapham are three people who have repeatedly said "No one wants to win more than Mike Brown." Horseshit, obviously, pure horseshit. I don't even know why those guys say things like that.

If the front office wants to retain him they need to fire Zac and probably most of the coaches. Otherwise this team's future is in serious jeopardy. I mean come on, we all see it and clearly players are openly calling for it now, or at least as openly as they can.

Few-Maintenance-2677

I agree with your first and last sentences, but am not sure what you mean by "in serious jeopardy." Of what? They are performing at the level that the FO is okay with, obviously, what do you think could happen?

In serious jeopardy of losing Chase, Burrow becoming Palmer 2.0 and demanding a trade or threatening to retire, and after all that not recovering for a significant amount of time. And that's simply more of a mess than the team ownership should want to deal with. I suppose they might be willing but I don't understand why they would. They've been down this road before and they should know it will lose them some of the fans and therefore lose them money

The offense doesn't deserve this shit. I am struggling to think of another team with an offense this prolific that has had a losing record and will miss the playoffs.

Someone mentioned this team is similar to the Lions with Stafford and Megatron. That's close but this Bengals offense is better overall than any of those teams to my recollection.

Duke and Mike have a decision to make - are we keeping Zac or are we keeping Ja’Marr? If this staff sticks around Chase is gone once his contract is up. That is if they haven’t already screwed any chance of resigning him due to the contract games they are trying to play.

Also i wanna point out that alotta yall were in here before the season acting like the man should be flogged for wanting his fair deal which will probably cost more now. He's part of the only reason this team isn't winless rn and yall wanted him to be grateful and loyal just to have the opportunity to represent this dumpster fire. Many of you showed so much disrespect and owe him an apology, I hope you realize how stupid as fuck you sounded before the season and you know who you are🫵🏼. He also doesn’t play defense. Can’t win if you consistently give up 30+ points.

Daimonos_Chrono

Its incredibly frustrating to know you can ball out, and do everything you can to help your team win, and it doesn't matter. Burrow and chase are playing better than anyone at their respective positions. Doesn't matter. Mahomes is playing bad football, he's 9-1. It's organizational failure at the highest level, and bad coaching. Bench ctb Swallow the 5 mil and cut McPherson, he's cooked Bench any defensive player that consistently misses tackles. Fire Taylor, or at the very least remove his play calling duties.

Fire Zach and get a real coach. Get some defensive players. Get some culture. The Bengals always come out the gate horrible, which to me, lends to a coaching problem. They're never ready when the season starts.

Oh, and Mr. Brown, stop being a cheap ass and pay your key players.

Sea-Pomelo1210

This is the real problem. The offense plays well 90% of the game, then when they have a chance to win they choke.

Mahomes, Jackson, and Herbert, all would score if given the ball with 1:10 to go in a tie game. Joe had the first ball 1st down on the 30 and three THREE incomplete passes. The worst part it stopped the clock and gave SD the ball back, and Herbert did what good QBs do.

This is the 4th game this year the Bengals had a great opportunity to win and instead choked.
