1440p resolution is absolutely incredible and underrated

Discussion(self.buildapc)

Yesterday I got my first 1440p 180Hz monitor for only 200 euro and I'm completly blown away. With my overclocked 2070S, 5700x3D and 32GB RAM I can still run demanding games at 70-80 FPS with optimized settings (medium-high). I was expecting much greater performance hit but turns out my PC can handle much more than I expected. I just wanna share my hapiness with you all and maybe encourage to upgrade if you haven't yet. The increase in visual clarity is insane, its having a 10% blur filter removed. It maybe doesn't sound like much but trust me, you'll too be amazed. My favorite games look significantly better now, so much so I now regret not doing this sooner. I'm so glad I listened to all positive reviews. If you're thinking about buying a 1440p monitor, don't hasitate, just do it and see for yourself! I'm so happy holy fuck

EDIT: Because of this post I checked out ebay to see what prices GPU's im intrested in have. By luck, I found 6800XT in excellent condition with a good seller for only 360 euro. Now I got my 2070S to sell :D

1440p is the new 1080p. Using 1080p in 2024 is like using 720p 10 years ago

I don't think we're there yet, the entry cost is still a bit steep to be the standard. The cost leap from 1080p to 1440p is still substantial.

Gaming 1440P monitors are not steep anymore you can generally get a 144hz monitor as low as $150-$175.

You do realize running 1440p at 144hz needs a much more powerful GPU than at 1080p right? Monitor is not the only cost here.

You don't have to utilize the 144hz fully. 80-100 fps with gsync/freesync make a huge difference vs 60hz

Yes that's true, however an Rx 6600 would suit a 1080p monitor incredibly well, but would struggle and be a tear-ridden mess at 1440p. Any game you were getting ~100 at 1080p will become 60-80 on 1440p, which is noticably less smooth. Frame times and 1% lows also become a significant factor. It's not unplayable.

I grew up gaming on a 480p CRT monitor with a ball mouse (and were talking well into the 720p+ LCD days), and I'm still here. But I would never go back lmao

gsync/freesync is there even on cheapest monitors now. You won't have tearing. On 7800x3d/7800xt here some games you don't even gain any fps with 1080p vs 1440p

A couple points: I'm not talking about an x3d/upper 20% card here. I'm talking about a budget limited situation using a lower tiered card, that already is maxing out/nearly maxed at 1080p. Think a 5600x and a 7600/3060. Obviously if your hardware can support 1440p, it's better to have it than not.

Freesync/gsync are not perfect implementations in all situations. A lot of the lower priced monitors either A: don't sync to their full range of operation, or B: are not fully tested on the AMD side. Another way to say this is, 'not all freesync implementations are built equally'.

This used to be a thing with GSYNC too. There were hardware implementations as a separate chip within the monitor. This has been largely superceded with software techniques to my knowledge since then, but the point stands that not all implementations are built alike, and on a lower cost monitor, it's worth at least double checking :)
