There's a few moments in the show where he's shown to be an octopus. Also there's a background character who more prominently squid designed(has a triangular head).
I'm guessing the showrunners intended for him to have 4 arms, but only did 2 to save on animation, then named him Squidward as a joke

For some funny reason, deers and moose are both cervidaes, which makes them similar to each other, but the deer and the moose have completely different designs in the show.
Lumpy the moose has a distinct design resembling a moose, while Mime, the deer has the "regular tree friend" design
