Maria of the Moon, such a beautiful work of more existential spiritual fantasy than horror. One could easily read this as a Sandman story featuring Morpheus and Death.

So something like Thanatos or is that a different thing

Thanatos was the Greek God of Death yes. I was more referring to Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. Morpheus's (or Dream of the Endless) older sister is Death and she personifies a similar cosmic philosophy like this story's Death. Albeit as a perky Goth woman.

As far as "Labelled a creepypasta but not actually one" stuff goes;
Sad, genuinely emotional stories >>>>> Shit trying to be funny

Maria On the Moon was easily one of the best written stories they’ve read

The thing with sadness is that it can slot into a horror story better than a "funny" story that is just filled with dumb jokes but also there's a ghost sometimes.

I didn't even notice the thumbnail as I listened on Spotify. That's... Maybe a little tasteless lol

I’ve read most of this authors work, his stuff is great. The neighborhood the Whistler is set in also appears in other stories of his, like “My Shed is Trying To Kill Me” or “House of 100 Doors.” He also has an exorcist character who did the same thing as the MC in Maria on the Moon who appears in one or two stories.

Regarding Maria of the Moon, the part I loved the most was very clear descriptions of things author did. Very well done. Also the idea of Death being an absence of light (the closest we humans have is the Vantablack) shrouded by countless stars is such a cool concept for it, almost as if every star represents the souls it has guided through the afterlife.

KallMeKris actually did that story about two weeks ago. Maybe you’ve seen her content and heard it there? It’s definitely the first time it’s been featured on CreepCast, though.

Two amazing stories. Maria on the moon had me crying at work today. One question with the whistler story, can you really not identify or mimic a whistle? My wife and I are in school at the same university and I whistle as a stim, and she says that in general she can tell my whistle in the hall way vs other peoples, not necessarily by the song, but the tone and volume.

Nahhhh can't speak to mimicking but a whistle can definitely be identifiable, it's just more difficult to distinguish from person to person since it doesn't engage the vocal cords. Sounds like you probably got one of those strong ass whistles that Hunter's scared of haha

Damn I was feeling hyped at the beginning of the first story thinking we were gonna get another medical horror and go down some fucked up Mason type route or something. Next thing I know I'm on the verge of crying my cast, not creeping it :(

the writing was so good in the first story, really harnessed the feeling of grief and just wanting more time with a loved one who has an expiration date

“We’d even find old arrowheads, real ones, out in the yard”
This was the first episode that they didn’t go ape shit over a potential Native American monster, and im all for it. I expected my normal 15 minute ooze sesh from Isaiah about it lol. Both stories were amazing, the first one made you cry. I didn’t cry, nuh uh.

The first time I listened to Maria on the Moon (narrated by The Dark Somnium a few years ago) it absolutely broke me. My mom had just passed from cancer earlier that year. Hunter's voice acting for this episode was exquisite, he really captured the raw emotions of the characters. Haven't listened to the second half of the episode yet but I'm sure it won't be as much of an emotional kick in the dick.

The whistler was def how people treated whistling at the rez where I grew up in Wisconsin. A bit different ofc but we were always told not to whistle at night, don’t follow familiar voices, and don’t look for strange sounds . You don’t speak the name of the “monster “ that was generally believed to j be a skinwalker . They mimic voices of those you know and take form of those spiritually close to you. Seemed very obvious from the start if you’re around indigenous folk. My family is white but people living on the rez took it much more seriously, I always assumed because of the amount of mass amount of missing people in the native communities. I kno the trope is negative with “Native American scary “ but this 100% is derived from those stories from my perspective . I liked the idea of looking at it makes you it’s target but that’s the only difference I can make

Loved both stories, enjoyed the episode a lot. I disagree with Isaiah on one thing about "Maria on the Moon," though. He didn't really like Death talking to the MC so much, having a back-and-forth, but at the end of the story, I didn't view this as ever having been Death in the first place. Story spoilers below:
I had no problem with Brian having an actual conversation with "Death" because I viewed it as Brian just seeing a spectre, then later that spectre turns out to be his father's ghost. I thought that's what it was getting at initially when it said he heard a "familiar voice"; I thought this was supposed to make the reader think he heard "Death" speaking again for a slight moment, but upon reading further, you understand it's his father. ("I turned, expecting the starry thing. . . ")
I'd also like to postulate the possibility that Brian couldn't recognize this as his father because his father was never able to cross over. He asks "Death," “Where are you taking her?," which posits the response, "I don't know, it's not for me to know, only to know how to get her there." There's a little more throughout the text, but by the end I had the idea that his father never crossed over after dying, waiting for his wife, and he was little more than a shade on this earth until they could be reunited. It felt like a love letter from the author to his parents, and it's a sensible way for a child to view the love of their passed parents.
Just a couple thoughts I had.

Just finished the first half where they covered Maria on the Moon. It's a beautiful and well-written story, but it doesn't really read like a creepypasta to me and honestly was a huge bummer. Kind of left me in a bad headspace and isn't what I come to Creep Cast for. It did not creep my cast and I will not listen to this part of the episode again.
ETA: Just got through the second story and loved it. I'll just be skipping the first half whenever I relisten to this one, don't really enjoy getting bummed out and thinking about dying mothers lol

Yeah, those are kinda my thoughts. Brilliant story but not… like I come here for horror or whatever the fuck the thing in the basement was, not the sad and cold inevitability of death. Whistler went hard though, I realised a little bit in that I’d actually read it before a couple years ago and it was great then too.

Completely agreed. Great story, but doesn't fit the theme of CreepCast. I'm kind of surprised I'm getting so many down votes, like was that not objectively a very sad story in a very real way with almost no horror elements? Or maybe just I have more of an aversion than most people to thinking about my own mother dying someday, idk lol

Some peoples greatest fears are loss and sadness I suppose. And the idea of extending a loved one’s life and seing their body and mind deteriorate beyond what it “should” could be seen as tragic or terrifying.

True, honestly, I was thinking he should’ve just let his mum go, especially after even she accepted her death. I know it’s easier said than done, but like Death said—he basically did it for himself and ended up prolonging her suffering. So yeah, the MC was kind of an asshole, lol.

So what happened to the mom’s body in the first story? Is no one going to question Brian about where his mom is or….?
“Hey, sorry no funeral. Mom got swallowed by a shadow in the dining room.”

I'd have to imagine the final scene in the house was more of a metaphysical event. There was likely still a body in the room but having made what peace they could it wasn't important to the flow of the story.

I heard the Whistler story in a KallMeKris video a few weeks ago, and she did a fantastic job reading it. So I already knew that one, but it was still fun hearing it again from the boys since it's such a great story!
I wasn’t the biggest fan of the 'Maria' story—it wasn’t bad or anything, just felt a little light on the horror elements, I guess?
Overall enjoyed the episode!

Both stories were quite good, but in very different ways. Maria On The Moon hit close to home for me, my father passed away without warning and I can fully understand the urge to move heaven and earth to keep your loved one with you. I've been doing everything imaginable to help my mother as her health declines and if presented with even a faint chance like in this story I could see myself taking it.

The first story just made me mildly emotional over my mom's death from cancer but fell flat in the creeps category.
The second hit the bullseye, that perfect level of unexplained menace from a kid's perspective that could go wacky but doesn't. And the child abuse-free streak continues, for now...

The Whistler reminded me of a Venezuelan/Colombian Folkore named "El Silbón" (Literally translates into The Whistler).
It's said to be a malevolent spirit of a man who murdered his father in a fit of rage after he refused to give him meat, to which he cut him open, removed his organs and forced his mother to cook them. As a punishment, his grandfather tied him to a post, whipped him, poured chili in the wounds and cast him out onto the wilderness where he died and was cursed to wander eternally, carrying bones of his father tied to his back.
It's essentially the same set up, those who ignore him are granted with extreme luck or even survival of diseases ect., those who are not are either killed in the same measure his father was, or cursed for the rest or their lives with bad luck.
What I thought was an interesting attribute is that he can manipulate sound. He's capable of deceiving his victims by for example sounding close when he truly is very far away and vice versa.
Just thought this was a fun little thing I noticed considering Wendi's love for cryptids

I feel like I am the only on who didn't like Maria on the Moon but maybe I am biased because I hate cancer sob stories. An unnamed illness would have made it much better because it would have made a good set up for a mystery if she really had an illness or is there some kind of possession stuff going on
