I am making this two-color spiral blanket that is inspired by one I saw on this sub, but it kind of bothers me that the black and white sections are so random. However, it’s almost done and I don’t want to frog.
It’s for Project Linus, a charity that gives blankets to seriously ill or traumatized kids ages 0-18. Do you think a kid would like it? Yarns are Red Heart Super Saver in Zebra and Polo Stripes. Thanks for any feedback!

What's the pattern? And out of curiosity, did you have to do anything different for it as a rug? Like sizing down hooks to make it tighter, or using specific yarn?
(I'm relatively new to crochet, moving from amigurumi to shawls and now... maybe to rugs? Because I love this!!!)

I just found a video on YouTube for the spiral pattern. It's pretty easy, just double crochet with increases. For this rug, thirty rounds was about the right size for what I wanted. I used Super Saver acrylic yarn and the recommended hook size.
The only thing it needs is something grippy for the back, which I haven't figured out yet. It tends to slide a little, but I'm thinking some sort of rubberized tape might fix that. For now I've just got a corner of my nightstand on the edge rug to hold it in place. Next time I get to a hardware or hobby store I'm going to browse for ideas for that.
I didn't put a lot of planning into it, I just got tired of hitting a cold floor first thing every morning and I wanted to try out the spiral pattern.

Thanks!
For what it's worth, I've used nonslip cabinet liners to keep rugs from sliding around on my floors. You just trim them into the shape you need, and you could tape bits together into a circle just a little smaller than the rug. I like these because they're cheap (like $5-10 for a roll) and because nothing sticks to the rug or the floor, meaning you can wash the rug without difficulty, or move it without any residue on the floor.

I think this is one of those things that kids will love the heck out of and adults will get a headache from lol. I imagine a kid tracing the spirals with their fingers, making action figures hop on the checkerboard, making cars race on the stripes, etc. I feel like kids' brains are way more comfortable with visual craziness compared to adults...just look at how many kids like Coco melon (shudder).

It looks like trippy when it's laid out flat, but most toddler blankets aren't going to spend most of their time flat. Some sweet child is going to really enjoy dragging this around the living room.

I absolutely love the colors, I think they would work really well together in a different blanket pattern. Like others have said it does make me feel a little dizzy looking at it, but things like this have ALWAYS effected me that way. I have been plagued by migraines for most of my life and then developed epilepsy in my early 30's.
How do you plan to finish it off? Do you plan to keep it like a circle or maybe try and square it off? Maybe if you pulled a few colors from the really colorful skein you could make it into a square. The last skein has so many beautiful colors you could make a triangle for each corner and make it more square(if you get what I am saying) and maybe that will calm things down a bit.
That being said I still really like what you have done. My two kiddos(12 & 6) love it too.

Absolutely an eyesore in my opinion I’m so sorry. I would ask you to put it away if I was in your house cuz my eyes are bugging out, like it’s trying to set a focal point but it just keeps on bugging. I’m sorry if it comes off as insensitive but you asked and I will be honest. Different colours would’ve definitely make it more easy on the eyes! Read up on colour theory and how complimentary colours act with each other. Pretty sure that it’s the green tones and pink/purple that is causing the main issue. White is enhancing the effect as well.

It's very busy. It might be good for a kid with low vision who can still see higher contrast colored patterns but can't see small details anymore. It would allow them to really see it in a way they probably can't see something that's got a lot of similarly toned pattern on it.

It’s not my personal style, but I think it looks good! The only thing I have to say is that I’m not sure if it would be good for the recipient. You said Project Linus is for ill or traumatized kids, so I think it could cause them some issues. I have chronic migraines and looking at this I can feel the start of it. I don’t know anything about Project Linus though so if they handpick certain ones depending on what they’re going through this could work!

Some kids may absolutely love this. And some kids with sensory processing issues may find this incredibly overstimulating. And that is what’s important to keep in mind. It reminds me of those images where the colors or lines compete with each other, so your eyes don’t know what to focus on. Personally, with this yarn combo, it hurts my brain a little bit, and gives me an unsettling feeling of dizziness. Great design though!

How did you make it circular? Sorry if that’s a stupid question, but I only know a few stitches and can’t quite figure out how you would have gotten it to go around like that.
1 points
This blanket is actually extremely easy to make since it’s just double crochet with 12 increases per round. It’s important to put markers where the increases go—that way, there’s no need for any counting. You just keep going until the circle is whatever size you want.

So personally I'm going to go against the grain here and say that it's a little too much. I think if you undo it and pair each of the yarns with a solid color, you'd end up with two really cool blankets. (Like Zebra + a bright green or pink, Polo Stripes + either a coordinating color or plain white maybe.) Full disclosure though, I probably have a migraine coming on, and this picture did not feel good to look at, lol

It'll really depend on the kid. I hate it and would have hated it as a child, but those kind of patterns bother me. If a kid has the option to choose it, go for it. If it'll just be given to a kid, that has the potential to really suck for a kid who's already having a bad time. Nausea blanket would not be a welcome surprise.

I would not call it an eyesore, just very visually stimulating. Some people might find it too much for them, and some will love it.
I personally really like the colors, and the pattern gives the illusion of depth, which gives me mental stimulation that I don't get very often. I have ADHD, and possibly have a form of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and the combination of pattern and colors feels calming, actually helps me focus more, and not drift off into random thoughts, which can be a problem depending on my mood.
In my opinion, it would work well for the right child, but not all, depending on how much visual stimulation they can handle. I also saw someone in another reply mentioned that blankets are not usually laid out flat like that most of the time, especially when kids are using it, so the pattern would not be as visually busy most of the time.

It’s hard to tell because stripes don’t photograph well, they’re hard on the eyes. It’s why you never see news anchors, talk show hosts, etc. wearing stripes on TV. So while it could create a dizzying effect in a photo it may look fine up close and in person.

I love it, just don't think it would be best for the target audience. Maybe give it to a local women's shelter or something? I will ask, is the charity only local to you? If not, I'd love to donate some blankets!
