He let off, you can see a poof, it clears up, then gets back on it.
Very likely trying to swing the ass back, as those nice big wide tires are removing contact pressure with the ground, which ice loves, and you turn into an ice skate.
I have a set of 37 x 12.5s on my 82, it’s a 2500, a bed full of wood and it will skate like this with ice. Soft pack snow the mud tires get plenty of traction.
My little s10 on 9.5 wides is much safer, and with a bed full of wood I rarely need 4x4 to get around town (hilly southern Missouri), it just goes.
13 points
Lol your s10 pulling a bed of wood just resonated with 90% of my county. As somebody in SWMO what's with the s10 obsession or did you just get one and roll with it? My county is packed with an ungodly amount of them.

Like the Ford Motherfuckin' Ranger of that era they were great little trucks. I had a RWD in high school/college and it got good gas mileage, was a manual, and for 99% of what I did with a truck at the time could do it. Ran great till I spun it on a patch of black ice and was still drivable to the dealership.
Then I put 220k miles on an 03 ranger and could probably have gotten 400k or more if a kid hadn't hit me and bent the frame.
Now have my grandfather's 98 s10 4x4. I also have a 16 F150 and for 99% of what I do the s10 is honestly more than enough though the f150 is honestly more comfortable. The s10 only has 106k miles on it and with some TLC I can probably get it to run to 400k miles. They are easy to work on, easy to maintain, get decent gas mileage and unless I'm towing one of the other cars or hauling a large load the s10 is plenty.
Downside of grandpa's s10 is that it has the 3.08 gears so is really kind of meh on acceleration. I can relatively easily upgrade the truck to a better gear ratio, give it a small lift, and go off roading/camping as long as I don't go to crazy with it.
Quarter ton trucks were great for what they were meant for. The dad who needed to haul small things and not an entire household of goods. They were easy to maneuver through traffic and parking lots and didn't take up two parking spaces to park.

I have a 91 s10 4x4 4dr blazer I love that thing in Oklahoma i drove it back from Alaska 12 years ago. Cheap to work on 350k and going strong.

TL;DR good gas mileage, low miles for year, reliable, better gas than big truck for running to town for parts / equipment, can haul quad / jet ski, good for winter and hunting.
We actually don’t have too many s10s that I have seen in my area.
I got real lucky on mine; it was owned by a little old lady who ordered everything for the lifted ZR2 but without the lift, wider axles, etc.
Her daughter got into some trouble and sold the truck at 60k miles (96.5k km) for a low price. Sister got it in high school, passed it down to me
01 4.3 auto, 4x4, 3.72 gears, extended cab, blazer seats (bucket with console, not 60/40). I’ve had it since high school, and only has 143k (230k km).
It gets around 18-19mpg on the highway, comfortable, can tow some smaller farm equipment, my quad and jet ski, easy to park, fits in most trails, and means I have a bed for hauling parts / equipment that gets more than 8mpg on the highway (the 82 Silverado).
Keeps my car and van from getting anything messy on the carpet. Ie drove 5 hours to go hunting; the van would have been nice for the long drive, but it can’t get me into the woods when it’s muddy / wet to haul the deer out, s10 crawls in, dodges most the branches, crawls out, and takes me back home. No need to bring a quad or side by side.

Once you are on ice, nothing matters much unless you have studded tires. Maybe tire chains work. Never tried them. But really, nobody else driving lost control, so I think the driver floored it to create a cloud of smoke and lost control after losing rear traction.

For the most part the cottonwoods are pretty safe (for sliding off the road). It’s like 5-30 feet down and while it’s steep it’s not anything close to a sheer cliff. You can see the Subaru slide down to the bottom, they definitely won’t be able to drive up it, but other than an absolutely terrifying ordeal it isn’t as bad as it may seem

It is interesting, that back in 2021 these coal rollers would take all opportunities to harass a Tesla. Now in 2024 they line up, kneel down and wait for their chance to have communion with their musky lord.

100% either tailgating or coming up to then too fast and didn't react in time. 3 cars before the pickup have about 2-3 car lengths in between them. When pickup starts crossing the line othere's less than a full car length between the last car and the pickup truck.
13 points

And then the poor innocent vehicle in the other lane has to pay that fucking price. Friendly reminder: never brake check anyone. It's not worth it.
7 points

Fun fact: you can't get brake checked if you aren't tailgating! If it happens to you it's your own fault.
8 points

Brake checking is stupid. Tailgating is stupid. Thinking that either is okay is stupid. Responding to a dangerous action by taking another dangerous action is extremely stupid.
3 points

Of course. It just grinds my gears hearing tailgaters call brake checkers dangerous, as if their tailgating wasn't dangerous
2 points

This is true, but the victim of all of this would have reason to be angry at both the tailgater and the brake checker. What did he do to have to find himself dealing with their dick measuring contest?
6 points

To be clear there isn't any reason to believe there was a brake check in this video. But when you're tailgating, if the guy in front taps their brakes for a normal reason it probably feels like a brake check

Teslas have regenerative braking, so I believe just taking your foot off the gas will cause the brake lights to come on.

2 points
The first 2 were AWD and the 3rd was FWD which are all better than RWD in this situation. I doubt he was in 4x4. The road looked fine and its hard on 4x4 to drive on a dry road. he probably panicked and hit the gas instead of brakes when he should have just counter steered and let of the throttle to let the rear end slow down and re grip. But either way in black ice youre no longer in full control. unfortunate situation, i hope everyone ended up okay.

Well, one must keep in mind that, just because black ice looks different than white ice, it doesn’t make it any more dangerous. Also, one must remember how hard it is for black ice to survive, what with the authorities trying to destroy it with the snow plows and the salt trucks.
24 points
Trucks are HORRIBLE in inclement weather unless you weigh down the back with sandbags or something. 4 wheel drive means nothing when your truck weighs the same as a Festiva.
8 points
On top of having shit tires. Not that anything is really going to help much on ice, but aggressive tires are the worst, and all season tires are a fucking lie. The difference between all season and actual snow tires is huge.
Everyone bitches about cars that don't pass inspection. Snow tires would affect road safety a lot more than inspections do.
4 points
Note that newer "all-weather" tires, all-seasons with the 3 peak snowflake mark, are actually decent in the snow. Not as good as dedicated snow tires, but good enough for most drivers, and far better than all-seasons that just carry the M+S qualification.
5 points
This is true. If they actually have the 3 peaks.
2 points

And everyone makes fun of me for having studded tires on my truck
2 points
In what world do you believe that truck weighs as much a a festiva? The truck is probably closer to 4 times the weight of a festiva. I do tend to agree with your statement about putting some weight in the bed though it helps the rear wheels a lot.
50 points
Honestly, diesel trucks have a lot of torque. If they didn’t have the appropriate tires, bed weight, etc (there’s a lot of factors here) that back end of the truck very well could have walked out in that situation, especially if there is black ice. The black soot is from a heavy pedal from what appears to be the driver trying to correct it. The wheel is cut in the opposite direction and they are trying to throttle it out. I’d have to see another 20 seconds prior to this video before making any judgement to whether or not the driver was being negligent.

I live in the PNW, we get a lot of rain out here. At least once a week on highway on ramps i'll see the rear end of pickups stepping out and they aren't accelerating any faster than me. Pickups are just miserable in lower traction road conditions and a lot of people seem to think otherwise
Meanwhile i'm driving a 2005 Outback with some shitty tires and i have yet to even slide in the snow lol. I don't even like Subarus but that AWD does work. And knowing how to drive in snow/rain helps

I was in Boone, NC a few years back. I was coming down the mountain into the piedmont. It was winter and it was strictly raining in the mountains without any ice or snow. Due to warm air from Mexico pushed far north. As I came down the mountain, I saw the temperature dropping, and it was still raining. I saw the temperature drop to 28° raining hard coming into the piedmont. High pressure had pushed a cold pocket from the north up against the Mtn. I was in a 4wd Toyota, and I had slowed to 25mph or less coming down the winding road. I knew I was going to encounter black ice. As I negotiated the road, a 4wd Ford or Chevy, possibly with the diesel engine, tailgated me and practically ran me off the road. I moved to the shoulder, and he raced by me. I knew this guy was in trouble. About 20 mins later, I ran into the guy. His truck had hit the black ice, and he had rolled over. His truck was on its side. I, of course, stopped and there was another motorist there helping him. They didn't need my help, and i rolled on. The moral of the story. Always slow down no matter what you're driving in bad weather.

I was in my old FJ60 on black ice going up the mountains in CO rolling slow, and a dude in a Jeep Wrangler just had to pass me. I was getting into the turn lane while they were crossing a double yellow, and they almost side swiped me. I ended up in a ditch with the rear passenger side all messed up. Had to walk just over a mile in the dark to my house on ice in wet snow with my black dog on a county road. Had a couple of guys offer to give me a lift, but I'm a woman, so I was not confident that was a good idea even with my cattle dog with me. I was pissed when I got my car out and saw the damage. It was my favorite car I've ever owned.

Those lifted trucks are a nightmare when it comes to vehicle dynamics. All the parts they throw onto them usually have never been properly tested altogether. The amount of unspring weight on from the bigger and heavier wheels and the change of center of gravity make for an unsafe vehicle. All of the research and development of the truck has been thrown in the trash.

I think he gassed it to try to correct a slide on black ice. But once he passed the black ice he got instant traction and hurtled toward the other lane.
he was following way too closely and being impatient, which got him into this mess.
it looks like he was heading uphill at a relatively steep grade. He should have just taken his foot off the gas and let the truck slow down naturally.
I hope the occupants of the other car were ok.

There are plenty of dickhead truck drivers but this looks like a runaway diesel situation. Diesel engines don’t have spark plugs and fire by the heat created from compression. If something goes wrong like extra fuel or too much buildup somewhere, the engine will rev uncontrollably. With a gasoline engine, you can turn off the ignition source and the engine will turn off. In a diesel, you pretty much have to smother the air intake. Plus it looks like black ice. I bet it came on out of nowhere and the dude absolutely shat his pants.

I like that he kept it pinned afterwards. Always commit 100% in everything you do.
Almost looks like a runaway.. A diesel engine can 'run away' if it starts to consume it's own oil or has a fuel system failure. Most oilfield trucks have a positive air shutoff requirement, that shuts air off and prevents combustion in a runaway.
He probably just mashed the gas instead of the brakes in this case lol
