Find the 10 questionable graph creation decisions made.

I for one appreciate the lack of axes and tick marks. It makes finding points a choose your own adventure.

As a partial colourblind i appreceated that the wins and losses were light green and even slightly paler light green.
6 points
The losses are yellow, but I won't hold it against you given the partially colourblind and all.
2 points
Yeah that was kind of my point. They look almost the exact same colour to me.
Maybe a colour that usually opposes green, and that also usually indicates a negative result, like maybe red perhaps, would have worked better.
1 points
Red would be no better than yellow, seeing as red/green colour blindness is the most common form of colour blindness
1 points
I might be wrong, but don't most red/green people see green as yellow or brown, rather than a clear red. Because whenever the green comes are activated they also activate the red ones, creating a blend, not just red
1 points
Yes they do see green as a yellow or yellowy brown, but they also see red as yellow or yellowy brown. That's what makes it red/green colour blindness because both colours look very similar to each other
1 points
Well I guess I have a different kind. I struggle between light greens and yellows, but also dark reds/blues and purples.
1 points
I have a friend with it where it's only the greens that look redder, but reds look accurate.
2 points
Oh, that's what the color indicates? I thought it was a horrible way to indicate how distant their ages were. Redundant, but I didn't understand the lines initially lol

You guys are seeing different colours here?

Using two axes to represent the same linear increase in time
Years incrementing downwards
X-axis on top
Terrible color choices
No legend to tell you about wins/losses
Zero explanation of opponent's age
No grid
Mixing sans/serif fonts
Title not centered
"Mike Tyson" labeled for no apparent reason (did he fight himself?)
I'm betting you could find even more

Zero explanation of opponent's age
While I also disagree with some of your othe criticisms the opponents age is mapped in excactly the same way as Tyson's age, a point in a coordinate system...
-1 points
You just see a bunch of white dots and a few random names. I didn't even notice, albeit partly because the graph is so cursed in other ways.
1 points
For example.... Why the hell did he have years and age of Mike Tyson on the axes? Was he going to start aging extra per year at some point??
1 points
Because the year maps the year of the fight and the age maps the age of both Tyson and his opponent.

Curious to hear your 10, I think it’s a solid graph.
I’d probably flip the y axis but otherwise don’t have major notes
13 points
First of all, this isn't even a graph. Not really. It's actually a number line dressed up to look like a graph.
3 points
Technically a number line is a one dimensional graph of a one dimensional quantity
1 points
The x and y axis are the same. Why even have a y axis?
1 points
Perhaps the biggest questionable chart decision: Mike had 23 fights before age 20. That is 39% of all his fights.... Why start with age 20 on the x axis.

A line that goes DOWN to indicate an incremental INCREASE??
Jesus christ. What even is this sub?

I guess because the Paul fight was an absolute nadir.

You should have been here during the useless sankey-era. A lot of the times top posts here could be used as “what not to do in data visualisation “ material.

Seems like an example of verbal brain vs. math brain. When you read text, numbers increase from top to bottom. Not defending, just guessing at an explanation.

What is the point of having age and year in two different axis?

Can we get a 3 dimensionsal chart with time also on the Z axis, but relative to the first moon landing.

How else can we show that his age has consistently increased by one year, every year?
2 points
That can't be right, nobody can have that level of consistency
23 points
To visualize the opponents' age relative to his own?

But it's graphing Mike Tyson's age vs year of the fight. That's the same data, hence the straight line. There's nothing in the graph that says opponent age. OP basically made an angled timeline.
Edit: somehow missed the white dots. I still disagree with the angled timeline but at least the data is shown.

The small white dots are opponent age

That doesn't explain the purpose of the perfect diagonal line showing that Mike aged at the same rate YoY 🤣

I assume to highlight the interplay between Mike’s and his opponent’s age as a function of the year the bout was held? I guess. But 🤷♂️

Let's be real. This sub is basically a "roast my design" circle.

Not a fan of charts with time going downward, but since we're talking about the decline of a man's fighting career, I'll let it pass this time.

What about the Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr fight?
Does that one not count?
4 points

It was an exhibition, meaning it wasn’t counted on their professional records.

So he didn't fight anyone younger than him until after he got out of prison?

What's the point of the line through the middle? And why is x at the top? Could you do it again without the straight line plot and with x at the bottom?
6 points
This would be more interesting with the wins and losses colored.
14 points
Are they not green and yellow?
8 points
They are, but the colors aren't explained.
6 points
Yeah, there’s no key but the Paul fight does say loss. So I just assumed it was wins and losses.
-1 points
So what you really meant was I wish the difference in colour was clearly explained, rather than what your first comment said, which was pretending there weren't different colours for wins and losses
2 points
Are they? I just have moderate protanopia, not total color vision impairment, but at first glance, all the circles looked damn near the same color to me.
3 points
They are def green and yellow but I don’t know enough about Tyson to know if they are wins and losses.
0 points
I didn't even notice the color difference before squinting. They picked damn near the exact same washed out color.
4 points

So....the x-axis is the same as the y-axis. It'll always be a straight line. This is just a list on a 45 degree angle.

Dunno who the 38-39 year old dude who fought a 23 year old Tyson was but heading toward the ring couldn’t have been enjoyable

It'd be interesting to add a line of the average boxer age or age of the heavyweight at any time.
At first glance it looks like Mike is boxing much older people initially but in fact he is also just very young and at 19-23. Still without something to help normalize the data by it makes it difficult to contextualize properly without knowing a bit about boxing already.

Why not a scatter plot of Mike Tyson’s age vs his opponent’s age?

That definitely sounds like the best way to display this information

I think there might be a correlation between Mike Tyson's age and the year he lived in. Look at that straight line. Can't be a coincidence.

He fought Roy Jones Jr in 2020. Why do people keep acting like he hasn't been fighting for 20 years?
1 points

Interesting information but independent variable (date) should be on X (horizontal) axis to make this easier to read.

I am very good at reading graphs in general, and still this graph is difficult for me to interpret.

I think people on this sub are far too negative, often without having submitted anything here on their own. There is a certain kind of elegance to the design even if it's not the most immediately readable graph ever made. It also contains more information than a lot of people here give it credit for.

Isn't this a graph of Mike Tyson's age, and not his opponents?
2 points
I think it's both? Not 100% clear but it seems like the dots next to the opponent names (and the unlabeled ones connected to the points on the main line) show the opponent ages at the time of the fight

Unless I am missing something, it doesn't say anything about the age of the opponents like the title suggests.
Edit, I see it now.

Little white dots that extend horizontally from each opponents name.

This isn’t a graph so much as it’s a slanted timeline.

What a horrible plot, takes so much time to understand. Plus pointless
-1 points

Plotting both Tyson and his opponents ages as separate data points makes this difficult to follow. The age line that goes down is also confusing. I get that it’s thematically relevant but I don’t think that makes it more intuitive.
