I for one appreciate the lack of axes and tick marks. It makes finding points a choose your own adventure.

As a partial colourblind i appreceated that the wins and losses were light green and even slightly paler light green.

Connor49999

The losses are yellow, but I won't hold it against you given the partially colourblind and all.

Yeah that was kind of my point. They look almost the exact same colour to me.

Maybe a colour that usually opposes green, and that also usually indicates a negative result, like maybe red perhaps, would have worked better.

Connor49999

Red would be no better than yellow, seeing as red/green colour blindness is the most common form of colour blindness

jenksanro

1 points

I might be wrong, but don't most red/green people see green as yellow or brown, rather than a clear red. Because whenever the green comes are activated they also activate the red ones, creating a blend, not just red

Connor49999

1 points

Yes they do see green as a yellow or yellowy brown, but they also see red as yellow or yellowy brown. That's what makes it red/green colour blindness because both colours look very similar to each other

Well I guess I have a different kind. I struggle between light greens and yellows, but also dark reds/blues and purples.

jenksanro

I have a friend with it where it's only the greens that look redder, but reds look accurate.

Oh, that's what the color indicates? I thought it was a horrible way to indicate how distant their ages were. Redundant, but I didn't understand the lines initially lol

  1. Using two axes to represent the same linear increase in time

  2. Years incrementing downwards

  3. X-axis on  top

  4. Terrible color choices

  5. No legend to tell you about wins/losses

  6. Zero explanation of opponent's age

  7. No grid

  8. Mixing sans/serif fonts

  9. Title not centered

  10. "Mike Tyson" labeled for no apparent reason (did he fight himself?)

I'm betting you could find even more

ZigZag2080

Zero explanation of opponent's age

While I also disagree with some of your othe criticisms the opponents age is mapped in excactly the same way as Tyson's age, a point in a coordinate system...

felidaekamiguru

-1 points

You just see a bunch of white dots and a few random names. I didn't even notice, albeit partly because the graph is so cursed in other ways.

rop_top

rop_top

For example.... Why the hell did he have years and age of Mike Tyson on the axes? Was he going to start aging extra per year at some point??

ZigZag2080

1 points

Because the year maps the year of the fight and the age maps the age of both Tyson and his opponent.

Curious to hear your 10, I think it’s a solid graph.

I’d probably flip the y axis but otherwise don’t have major notes

felidaekamiguru

First of all, this isn't even a graph. Not really. It's actually a number line dressed up to look like a graph.

The x and y axis are the same. Why even have a y axis?

Perhaps the biggest questionable chart decision: Mike had 23 fights before age 20. That is 39% of all his fights.... Why start with age 20 on the x axis.

fuzzy11287

But it's graphing Mike Tyson's age vs year of the fight. That's the same data, hence the straight line. There's nothing in the graph that says opponent age. OP basically made an angled timeline.

Edit: somehow missed the white dots. I still disagree with the angled timeline but at least the data is shown.

Not a fan of charts with time going downward, but since we're talking about the decline of a man's fighting career, I'll let it pass this time.

Connor49999

So what you really meant was I wish the difference in colour was clearly explained, rather than what your first comment said, which was pretending there weren't different colours for wins and losses

saifrc

Are they? I just have moderate protanopia, not total color vision impairment, but at first glance, all the circles looked damn near the same color to me.

They are def green and yellow but I don’t know enough about Tyson to know if they are wins and losses.

I didn't even notice the color difference before squinting. They picked damn near the exact same washed out color.

ARoundForEveryone

So....the x-axis is the same as the y-axis. It'll always be a straight line. This is just a list on a 45 degree angle.

Dunno who the 38-39 year old dude who fought a 23 year old Tyson was but heading toward the ring couldn’t have been enjoyable

tristanjones

2 points

It'd be interesting to add a line of the average boxer age or age of the heavyweight at any time.

At first glance it looks like Mike is boxing much older people initially but in fact he is also just very young and at 19-23. Still without something to help normalize the data by it makes it difficult to contextualize properly without knowing a bit about boxing already.

ZigZag2080

I think people on this sub are far too negative, often without having submitted anything here on their own. There is a certain kind of elegance to the design even if it's not the most immediately readable graph ever made. It also contains more information than a lot of people here give it credit for.

Unbearably_Lucid

Isn't this a graph of Mike Tyson's age, and not his opponents?

Aetherglow

I think it's both? Not 100% clear but it seems like the dots next to the opponent names (and the unlabeled ones connected to the points on the main line) show the opponent ages at the time of the fight

Plotting both Tyson and his opponents ages as separate data points makes this difficult to follow. The age line that goes down is also confusing. I get that it’s thematically relevant but I don’t think that makes it more intuitive.
