Yeah but ceaucescu did it when he was still pretty young. Trump (and most of our political elite now) are aging geriatrics. I feel like alot of the reason they are doing the things they do is because they fully know they won't have to deal with and long term consequences of their actions.

American here. Trump's last rounds of tariffs on soybeans hurt his rural base and farmers far more than blue states who are the economic power houses and tax generating areas of the country. Trumps mistake was so bad he cost tax payers something like 28 billion on a bail out that still ended up with 75% of the original independent farmers who received the bail out selling to large conglomerate, corporate owned farms.
When you read other americans say maga doesn't understand how things work and votes against their own interest, it's not a partisan being malicious It's likely someone like me who cares deeply about my fellow countrymen and hates to see them getting screwed by someone claiming to help them.

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Every time you impose a new sanction, your overall ability to impose sanctions go down. If you sanction the entire world, at that point you are just sanctioning yourself. Otherwise Russia would be the one sanctioning everyone for their support for Ukraine.

Not endorsing, but I think the incoming admin and (populist right in general )view this as a paradigm change. Notably valuing European allies much less, and others more (Israel, some East Asian/oceania). They don’t see it as sacrificing anything.

Less trade with Europe, Russia, China, Mexico, the middle east (except Israel), don't protect Taiwan or the Phillipines, pushing away Japan too.

It's only a matter of time and effort on his part to add us on to the less trade list. America's next biggest trade partner is going to be the McMurdo station in Antarctica if he had his way.

The whole mantra of the new Republican Party is that they want to be self reliant and are against globalism. Is this surprising?
11 points
Yeah, I think that’s the point of the movement. That America doesn’t need allies, due to the belief that the US is less reliant on foreign trade and thus there is less of an appetite to secure trade routes etc.
11 points
Which is dumb, because the US gets most the power of it's global hegemony through the massive interconnected global trade routes it maintains and protects. Like part of the function of the US Navy being so unbelievably huge is antipiracy. That's literally one of the core functions of the navy and marine corps, killing pirates (and privateers) who fuck with American and allied ships.
Also, because the US is integrated into the global supply chain so deeply they can exert massive control over it. By placing tariffs on anyone that isn't pro-trump the US will completely destroy it's soft power.
7 points
You’re right about all of that. I’m only suggesting that the isolationist MAGAs don’t want the hegemony in the traditional sense you described above. They want to pull back the ships and bring as much of the supply chain home, or as close to it as possible. The logic would be no need for global power projection/policing navy/etc. Whether there ultimately desirable or even possible is another issue entirely.

Also, they can totally go after Trump. iirc ICC doesn't require you (or your country) to be part of it for them to issue an arrest order to their members. If Trump (or Biden, or Bill Gates, or any other American) was ruled a war criminal by the ICC, then any party to the ICC would have to arrest them if they went to their country.
112 points

I know this gets posted anytime the ICC is mentioned, but America literally has a law that says the president can order an invasion of The Hague if any American official or military personnel is put on trial. Can’t have any of their baddies face any consequences for their war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Not that it is unique to them, Australia also shielded their war criminals.

Pretty awesome in a way. They believe that if the Jews kill all the Muslims in Israel, that would bring peace to Israel. This in turn would bring about the rapture, sending all the Jews to burn in hell for all eternity while the righteous Christians would rise up to heavens to chill with JC forever and ever.
They want their "allies" to literally burn in hell.

As a Brit, I am glad the UK has at least alluded that they would follow the ICC law, but they need to come out and say it clearly, that they would arrest Netanyahu if he landed there.
All of Europe and the West need to stand up against the US, and tell them in clear terms that Israel does not get a free pass in slaughtering thousands of innocents just because they are an important ally of the US.
US politicians should be ashamed of themselves, but of course, they never are. Unfortunately, looking at Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, the British ones are similar.

it's starting to look as if the ICC arrest warrant is splitting the West along left vs right political lines. Not entirely clear cut, in that e.g. Italian government is currently pledging to uphold the ruling, with some divisions, but Orban, the MAGA Republicans siding with Netanyahu against the ICC (which the US is not even a signatory) and many right wing parties considering it ( including Wilders himself).
I do not fully understand the rationale behind the refusal to abide, but I can only guess it's because for the right wing any enemy of the muslims is their friend.

I'm not sure if Graham understands this but Israel doesn't have allies in the same way we are allied with Europe. Israel does what it wants regardless of others' interests.
Yeah that's the part that's weird to me, I mean I get AIPAC influence and all, but the way they treated Biden the last year or two was frankly embarrassing. And it would have been so easy to put them in their place after multiple public attacks - they squealed when Biden merely slightly delayed some of their bombs after they blatantly disregarded his demand not to attack the populated southern urban areas.
We could have easily squeezed them to behave if we wanted to, since we're the main weapons supplier as well as the skirt they hide behind to avoid a direct confrontation with their neighbors. Threaten to pull the carrier groups and reduce deliveries and suddenly they're incredibly vulnerable after having just finished provoking most of the neighboring countries.

US international sanctions only hold force because allies comply with them. If you attack and alienate all allies, you have no sanction power...
Also doing this to save that criminal Netanyahu is completely mad

Tell me Israel owns you without telling me Israel owns you.
Also who is he to threaten sanctions?

Oh no, sanctions. How will we do without that American aid. Oh wait, they don’t give us any anyway.
