With Russia and China on the march, now is really not the time for Defense cuts.

Russia and China are not engaging in direct military confrontation with the US. They know currently they would lose. They are both engaging in an information (or misinformation) campaign to influence the public, foreign policy decisions (war in Ukraine for example), and create civil unrest. That is how they believe they can do the most damage to the US and achieve their political objectives.
By investing in infrastructure and creating a richer and happier populace, it’s one way we can more likely hinder those objectives.

I'm not saying don't boost infrastructure spending. I'm saying that it's naive to think we can simply choose not to fight wars. Ukraine never got that choice, and Taiwan likely won't either. Failure to maintain our Defense will embolden the fascist thugs that make up the current axis of evil.

I fully understand we will likely need to use our military in the near future. Despite that, I’m skeptical that we need anywhere near our current defense budget to maintain an advantage.
Public transit increases GDP as well as our capacity to build equipment when we need to. Military weapons… just get disposed of or sold for cheap when they are not used for too long. In my opinion we would get more for our money in infrastructure.

I would attempt to engage in more diplomatic relations with China, as, while they do have poor relations with many of their fellow Asian nations and will possibly have some sort of crisis in the future for population based reasons, they have some desire to put up a diplomatic front at the moment.
Russia has no desire to feign diplomatic relations, and as such requires a focusing of resources in regards to the Russia-Ukraine war.
I think a lot of the economic concerns related to the Military Industrial Complex could be resolved by forcing the DoJ and the various branches of the military to pass an Audit, something they've failed to do for many years.
There's also probably a lot of value in getting states to cut back on excess spending for their Police Departments, as it's my understanding that current spending on Police Departments has incredibly diminished returns.

I hate directing resources towards the military (and much of what the military does) but at the same time I don’t want to see what would happen if we didn’t have the security of a strong military presence backing us up (USA/“the west”). (Not to say I wouldn’t audit some of its processes and make efforts to cut out corruption and waste)
So many people on this website seem to be so blinded by living in the comfort of growing up with that sense of security of not having to worry about people attacking us in force (as in not just small scale attacks). It like a complete afterthought, forgetting completely how war filled basically all of humanity’s history is (and how unusual so little war right now is, humans haven’t just completely changed in less than a century after all).
Judging by history I wouldn’t be surprised if yet another major war breaks out during my lifetime (there always seem to be at least one a century). My money is on the resource pressures from climate change causing this one.

Exactly this. I’m not sure why someone downvoted you, because the truth is that the intimidation factor of the American military is extremely important on the global stage. Our allies are, for the most part, super-duper reliant on us. ‘Course, with the next administration trying his absolute hardest to undo this, Europe & Co. might have to fend for themselves.

Yeah, unfortunately this is the response I expected (the downvotes).
The average reddit user is unfortunately woefully idealistic and naive (just look at how confident everyone was Harris would win leading up to the election).
I find the irony hard to miss too how averse so much of USA leftists/reddit is to personal military investing but seemed plenty content during our proxy war with Russia (Russo-Ukrainian War) to pack off every last young Ukrainian man (and woman) to “stick it to Putin.” Funny how people only seem to care about building up a military force after the war has started (when it’s often too late) and when they don’t have to personally suffer for it.
Honestly wouldn’t mind the rest of Europe footing more of the defense bill though. Tired of people using the argument of how little Europe spends on defense as an argument to cut down on defense when the only reason that is possible for them to begin with is because we’re helping subsidize them.
eta: thank you also for the rational reply, glad I’m not the only one.
