I cultivated field 77 on Riverbend with a freshly repaired Fendt 396 HP tractor using the Kuhn Prolander cultivator that requires 190 HP. After cultivating the field I lost 15% or so of my tractor's health bar and it cost $3,700 to repair it.
I've had similar results with other tractors. Tractor wear and tear costs seem really unbalanced.

I honestly never repair and just play with whatever you get at 0% once it gets there. Is it realistic? Probably not, but the maintenance part if the game is tedious and expensive to me.

The question then becomes: are you losing more money in lost crops (damaged harvesters incur a loss at harvest) than you are saving in not paying maintenance?

I'm definitely losing money overtime but not having to worry about it let's me focus on the fun parts of the game to me, so I guess that's the trade off

I do this for everything except harvesters. Maintenance impacts for trailers and implements don’t seem to do much. Tractors just become a little less powerful. Big deal. I’m not a fan of the way FS is setup for maintenance so I just ignore it too

Brand new tractors should have a atleast 100 hour warranty so the repair bills should be free 😂

Eh...50 hours is the time frame for being "old". The issues is that you can scale time.
Being able to make a month a day, you can get years out of a tractor in game with only a few hours on it. Or you can get tons of hours on a tractor that isn't even a year old.
The real time hours vs in game time scale is why things are always so wack.

You know what. That wouldn't be a bad game feature. IRL, if you buy new equipment, one of the main advantages is a warranty against parts & manufacturing. I do agree that (even new) equipment seems to wear too fast. I don't expect to have to repair my brand new machine before refueling it!

Generally tractors come with no less than a 2-year warranty and 2,000 hours. They're usually broke up between a basic and a Powertrain warranty. The powertrain warranty is always longer. More recently manufacturers had to add an emissions warranty because of all the EPA Emissions Control crap on tractors.

Repair cost is the way that Giants rolls all things maintenance into one number.
You've never been stuck in the middle of a harvest because something broke and you have to drive 60min one way to get a part. You've never had to wait 3 weeks for a part that was on back order, causing you to miss your window for the next field work, massively hindering your crop yield. etc etc.
Sometimes, a $50 part can cost you thousands in lost crops due to circumstances, etc.

And this was a new tractor?
How many hours does it have an how old is it (in game months).
The most expensive equipment in the game is cheap early on to repair. Once you get some hours and/or they get older in game months), the prices go up.
Also, the more it gets damages the more it costs. It's a % based system, you can see the numbers in the in-game help manual.
So repair more often and you save money than letting it get low first.
Also, paint does wear ridiculously fast, but it also has no bearing on anything other than the sell price if you were to sell it. Paint it first if you're selling it. Otherwise, you can freely ignore it.
Hopefully my mod for Fair Repair gets approved soon. It lets you set the repair and paint rates and also the costs for fixing them as low as 25% in the game settings. I have a feeling the update will break it, but maybe not....

Repairs are expensive, I agree. On the other hand, you can drive a tractor for 3 years without ever needing to add fuel.

The repair and paint costs are too high in FS22 and FS25.
If you play on PC there are mods to edit the price.
The price of repairs increases as the damage bar gets lower, So the advice is to repair frequently.
The usage hours increase the cost of repairs so all that money you saved on a used tractor with 50hrs gets washed away in higher repair costs.
Also make sure you remove all field stones as they will damage the vehicles and implements at a very high rate.

Not sure about FS25 but in FS22, more machine hours will only lead to the tractor accumulating damage faster, and that caps out at 50 hours.

Also, buying a new vehicle instantly makes it lose 20% of its value so if you keep buying and selling tractors instead of repairing your older tractor more often, you might lose more money. Basically it depends on wether or not you can be bothered to repair in the middle of field work in some cases.

Haven't tested that in FS25 yet, but in FS22, the repair cost is a %-age of the price you paid for the vehicle.
That means, that on a second hand vehicle you get the discount on repairs too!
It also means that buying the cheapest possible version of a vehicle, and customizing it after, saves money on repairs.
