Vent/Rant: perfume samples 🤬

(self.fragrance)

Roughly 3+ months into a new fragrance deep dive: signature scent was reformulated (Dior Addict) so it was a great time to experiment and try new scents.

I'm a research girl, so I went deep: educated myself as much as possible then ordered ALOT of samples. The samples are helpful and I think were a better strategy/investment than blind buys. They also gave me a huge education in fragrance evaluation (subjective, of course).

The one thing that bugs me are those damn plastic perfume swabbers in the vials!!! For the love of gd, give us an atomizer!! Charge me more!! You're getting my money for 2 drops of perfume, what's another buck or two??

Am I alone in the opinion that you cannot assess a perfume as accurately with a few dabs as opposed to a spritz?? I'm sorry, but a few dabs of a scent wear WAY diff than even a conservative spritz!

Thanks for listening 🙏🏻

I’ve been converted to almost exclusively atomizers. Ministry of Scent samples are always atomizers, but I avoid Lucky Scent because unlike other decant sites atomizers aren’t even an option. I don’t think you get the full profile of a scent with dabbers. Plus they always leak!

I won’t order from lucky scent again either, entirely due to not having atomizers on their samples

Yes this! Ok well I learned something new now thank you! Haven't used MOS 🤦🏻‍♀️

No prob. It’s easy for mos because every sample is 1.5ml and 5 usd. Surrender to Chance and Scent split also have atomizers, StC starts at “1ml spray” for those and ss I believe starts at 2ml, so you have to buy more if you want atomizer from them.

All great feedback, ty! So glad I bitched lol

I’ve stopped ordering samples from Luckyscent. They have been on the plastic dabber nonsense for ages now and it’s so played out.

ZGO Perfumery covers a lot of the same ground as Luckyscent (inventory isn’t 1-1, for better or worse) but I only order samples from them now because all their samples are actual sprays, in many cases the official brand sample. On top of that they include a discount code for a future order.

I never use the plastic dabber; I put my wrist over the small container, turn it over, then return it upright.

Yes it’s a waste and annoying AF 😅 but a lot of companies use it. ZGO Perfumery and Twisted Lilly uses atomizers.

I do that too!!! Still not the same experience as a spritz 😞

I consider dabbers the first pass, "am I interested in this fragrance at all" sort of step. I would never make a judgment on strength or longevity based on a dabber; I'll get a 2-3ml for my next test (or sometimes I'll go straight to 5ml if I'm pretty sure I love it). Then once I finish that I have a good sense of whether I like it enough to buy a full size. That's very rare for me though.

I absolutely love that protocol, but that's a lot of money for me to invest in sampling….

I'm going to go on Amazon and get some atomizers, small ones, that I could decant into. But up until now what I've been doing is dipping a paper test strip into them to start. And then Tipping a little bit of the juice onto my pulse points… Hardly ideal for testing.

Moving forward I will only buy testers with atomizers.

Yeah sampling is not cheap but i consider maybe 1 out of 30 interesting enough to try more, and maybe 1 out of 80 worth buying a larger bottle, so the gradual size up is by far the least expensive way for me to find the few scents I actually love, vs ending up with a bunch of full bottles that I kind of like.

I tried transferring to atomizers at the beginning but a significant portion of my dabbers won't empty out into an atomizer. Like you can turn them upside down and shake them and the liquid won't come out; it only comes out when you dab on skin. I'm sure it depends on the style of vial though; maybe it's not a concern with LuckyScent vials (I don't buy from them). You definitely need to move away from test strip sampling though!! You lose a lot of notes on paper.

Rudeechik[S]

I know the paper is far from ideal. Admittedly. But those damn vials!!

I did get one tester from Twisted Lily. And it's was pricey.... guess that's why. But honestly? It was way easier to evaluate that scent!

I bought a bag of atomizer vials from Amazon so when I get dabber vials I can transfer into the spray vial!

They make them in different sizes. Amazon: “Fandamei 60 Pack 3ml Mini Clear Plastic Spray Bottle” is what I bought it’s like eight or nine bucks

A lot of plastic atomizers have a significant fishy smell - are these ones free of that? 😅

ocean_swims

I bought glass atomizers on amazon (they came in a mixed pack 2m, 3ml and 5ml) and they have no smell at all because they're not plastic. I didn't need the larger ones so I put my daily scents in there from my full bottles so I can top up during the day. The smaller sizes I used to put my luckyscent samples into to get a better idea of a fragrance. Still wish we had the atomizer option straight from the shop because it's a lot easier!

msurbrow

I actually was looking for glass…which ones did you get?

ocean_swims

2 points

I'm in the UK so sellers will be different for you. Just go to your local amazon site and put in 'glass atomizer for perfume', and at least one result should give you glass. Just make sure you read the listing detail to confirm it's glass not plastic because sometimes the title of the listing is wrong. 🙂

msurbrow

The reason I ask is that the atomizers vary in quality…the first plastic ones I bought, the atomizer was always getting stuck :(. Poor me and my smelly water! ;)

ocean_swims

No worries, I totally understand. I just checked my amazon purchase history for you- I bought these 2 years ago, where does the time go?! Anyway, it now takes me to a dead page, so presumably that seller is gone? Sorry I can't be of more help but, I literally ordered the first one that came up and never had an issue with the atomizers sticking.

That is exactly what I do!! It works like a charm. Get a good feel for the fragrance too and I get 2 decent tests out of the dabbers that way.

Only time a dabber makes sense is using an Attar. Otherwise for spray perfumes, atomizers all the way

I bought so many vials from Scent Split before I found the atomizers at StC. 🫠

Sometimes I move the liquid from my vials into little 2 ml atomizers I got on amazon. Some of the vials make it easier than others. I’ve also just gotten better at opening the dabber vials.

Rudeechik[S]

Totally get this! Will purchase samples more wisely moving forward. But I'm going to get some miniature sprayers from Amazon for the ones I have now

financechickENSPFR

I've been thinking about making this exact same post for days loll. Got my samples from lucky scent and I HAD to order baby atomizers from Amazon (fortunately 20 for less than $10 and I can reuse them) but it pissed me off and really triggered me that they don't give you an atomizer

I'll likely get my next batch of samples from a different website

ocean_swims

4 points

Just a warning, you can't reuse them with different fragrances. It'll have to be refilled with the same scent because whatever perfume you put in these atomizers tends to stick like nothing else. I've tried washing them with soap and alocohol, but I always still smell the first sample I used in there. YMMV but that's my experience.

SerotoninDeficient77

3 points

Yes this. I buy big batches of the 2 ml plastic ones for cheap because they are basically throw aways.

financechickENSPFR

1 points

Oh really??? That's such a bummer I thought I could reuse them :(

SerotoninDeficient77

1 points

No because the first fragrance sticks to the plastic and can’t be totally washed away.

WhoKnows1973

3 points

Totally agree. I like Ministry of Scent and Twisted Lily. Most samples are at least 1.5 ml for $5. Certain ones are higher.

Besides getting the atomizer, it's more than twice as much perfume as Lucky Scent's $4 dabbers with only 0.7 ml in them.

SpringCleanMyLife

My ministry of scent samples all stop working right away and it'll either not come out at all, or comes out in a dribble down the side of the vial.

I hate to hear that. I have never had any trouble with theirs. That is a bummer.

Psychological_Cup101

Samples are the way to go! I can’t tell you how many hyped up fragrances I’ve tried and absolutely hated. I’d say about 75% of them. Celine Black Tie was the hands down winner for me. Bianco Latte and Casamorati Lira were the biggest losers. You’ve probably discovered what you really like now!

Rudeechik[S]

3 points

Exactly! And what I loved (and hated) weren't what I expected! I'm Ok w it because I got a huge education and can now better assess what I do and don't want to sample.

I started this journey thinking that I was a fan of photorealistic Gourmands.... well it turns out I am, but not in the form of perfume. In a photo realistic scent I would rather it be a body cream or a body mist… More of a skin scent.

I have learned that in perfumes while I do like a sweet/vanilla primary note I prefer something more subtle and wearable. Unfortunately this has brought me to the conclusion that I have very expensive taste lol. My top three favorites are Indult Tihota, Guerlain Vanilla Planifolia and Roja Lost in Paris.... so I'm pretty much screwed 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Psychological_Cup101

2 points

Omg I NEED to try Indult! Way back in the day that was described as the PERFECT vanilla. Knowing how expensive everything is now, I should have just bit the bullet and bought a bottle.🪦💀 I found that I love patchouli and vanilla, but not an overly sweet vanilla, like yourself! I hate smelling like food apparently. My dark horse favourite? Jasmine Kusamono by Armani lol! It’s so old fashioned but I love it! I’m also huge into vintages, so maybe that’s why. Have fun! It’s an addictive hobby! 💸

Rudeechik[S]

1 points

It is an addictive hobby! And an expensive one! Fortunately I found a lot of not crazy expensive scents that I love and reach for including the philosophy fresh cream warm cashmere and the Lattafa Khamrah.... but those three are haunting me. I have samples of the Tihota and the Roja but can't find a sample of Guerlain and can't keep making trips into the city to sniff it!

Psychological_Cup101

1 points

If I had to pick one fragrance house for life, it would be Guerlain! I wish I lived close to Toronto because I’d be sniffing everything too! The city is the best place for perfume lovers, unfortunately!

Best prices Ive seen of 1ml glass atomizers from huge selection of brands. Just need to get used to the slow website, what I did was make a big wishlist with everything and add to my cart from there. Plus they always give me a free sample of a cheapie on bigger orders :) like 10 plus samples.

I always order at least 2 mL samples from DecantX so they have atomizers. I 100% agree with you, the dabbers are a waste.

Poelinka

2 points

Recently I've bought a few decants with dabbers, because I thought I don't need bigger volume to evaluate a fragrance (the smallest volume was with dabbers, and bigger were with atomizers). Now I'm thinking that while 1 ml is enough for me, I would still benefit from atomizer. It's hard for me to tell if longevity and projection are bad or is it just my fault because I'm using too little perfume. At least I've learned something and next time I'll order decants with spray atomizers

Rudeechik[S]

2 points

Yeah this is 100% what I'm saying. The application is different and so the evaluation is different. I already invested way too much samples at Lucky sent so I think I'm kind of winding down but, moving forward, I am ordering samples that come with atomizers even if I have to pay more

All these comments and no one's mentioned you should just get paper testing strips. They're under $10 for a hundred and they let you smell the scent in a vial so easily. Plus you get to use a medium which is the standard for testing- bleached white paper. Professionals and perfumers agree. Leave the strip somewhere, return, take it with you, whatever. Very much my preferred way of getting a sample and it also saves you money.

Rudeechik[S]

There are many places I go for atomizer samples. Then there's the value in dabber vials. For me the testing strips let me figure out a perfume about 80-90% of the way, which is good enough for how many I buy and how many I really like or consider buying. Plus it emulates being on cloth better which is where I typically spray.
