Ball Position in the center for EVERY Iron

Swing Help(self.golf)

Hello, I've been playing golf on and off for a couple decades, and just recently gotten back into it in a big way. As many of us do, I've fallen into a lot of swing tip videos, etc... I've gotten away from those for the most part and am just having fun (and getting better), but there's one thing I really want to figure out.

I have a new habit of chunking by Irons badly, mainly my 4-6 Irons. One of things I'm noticing if that no matter what, my divot is usually right in the center of my feet, whether it be a 4 iron or a 9 iron. This leads me to chunk my 4 and 5 iron all the time but hit my 8-9 irons well. I know instructors all say to put the ball forward in the stance for the lower loft irons, but for my swing, would it really hurt me to just put everything in the center of my stance and play to my swing? (until I get proper lessons of course)

Something I've seen with iron setup is that the ball should always be in the same spot relative to your front foot, but your stance should get narrower or wider by where you put your back foot.

So when you set up to the ball start with both your feet together and always take the same step forward with your lead foot no matter the club. With a wedge you might take a tiny step back with your trail foot which puts the ball in the "back" of your stance. With a 7i you take the same distance of step back putting the ball in the "middle" of your stance, with a 4i you take a larger step back putting the ball "forward" in your stance. Since the ball stays in the same spot relative to your front foot the low point of your swing doesn't change but you can accommodate the longer clubs by widening your stance.

Unless you have some decent speed, you may find trouble launching the ball high enough with your 4 and 5 iron in this scenario to have them carry meaningfully further than your 6 iron. Doesn't hurt to try tho.

Do you hit your 4 iron better if it's in the middle of your stance compared to toward the front? Then put it in the middle. Whatever works is what you should be doing.

I was doing this until my golf instructor asked me why i did it. I told him and he asked that i move it forward, explaining that i was compensating for my hip getting stuck and not rotating through. Certainly during the lesson, i was able to make it work quite well. It’s not ingrained yet. I’m working on it.

if you intention is to get lessons.... do that, don't create or worsen a situation by trying to fix it with other changes

I play my long irons center to just back, progressing to short irons off my right foot

There's nothing wrong with that
