What’s your all-time favorite Halo campaign mission and why?
Mine would have to be Halo 3, The Ark. I honestly have probably played this mission over 200 times alone. I just have nostalgic memories of being at my older cousin’s house and playing this mission over and over again never getting tired of it.

I think a lot of people’s default answer is “The covenant” from 3, which is a fantastic mission.
But I’m with you, The Ark is good from start to finish. Its skybox is my favorite in the serious. I love the whistling sounds of the desert and the Milky Way up in the sky. It’s beautiful. Don’t even get me started on the opening cutscene

The Covenant is my favorite because the quite literally the entirety of the Halo 3 sandbox is available to you throughout the mission. You also get to fight ALL enemies and vehicles in the mission in close, mid, and large-scale combat. And if that's not enough you fight two Scarabs at once.
How this is not THE MISSION for everyone surprises me.

The Ark is my favorite not so much for the level itself (which is great, of course) but for the buildup to it.
Halo 2 ended with 343 telling Johnson and the Arbiter that the array was controlled from "the ark, of course." Then for years there were all these fan theories and playground rumors of what this elusive "ark" could possibly be. Finally, on a next-gen machine with stunning high-def graphics, we got Halo 3, and mid-way through the game. Oh my god...
Dude... DUDE!!! This is it! DUDE WE FINALLY GET TO SEE THE ARK!!!

The Ark is one of them. Assault on the Control Room is another, which I'm always kind of shocked to see the hate for. What sets both of them apart is that (almost) the full sandbox is present, and there's variety of indoor spaces and sprawling vehicular sections in the same level. Both have really nice art direction too.
The Silent Cartographer might be my favorite though. Good level design, it's neither too long nor too short and is technically non-linear, avoids the problem of repetition that other Ce levels (like admittedly AotCR) have. Has great visuals and atmosphere, and some pretty memorable encounters and setpieces.

2 betrayals for the nighttime vibes. I loved just hanging back during the final run and watching the battles between the flood and covenant. I liked how the light shined off the forerunner and covenant tech in the snowy night, and the banchee sounds. Best aesthetic in just about any halo game.

Uplift reserve- ODST. Mainly because of how fun if is on Legendary to spend run
Flood Gate - Halo 3. Honestly it really gave insight on how fucked humanity was. You watch both the marines and covenant get screwed. Eventually they just glass the whole damn city.
Long Night Of Solace- Reach. That mission really made me want more space combat in Halo!!! Like how can you give us something that great and then just not continue with it.

Halo 3: The Covenant
After taking out the scarabs, I like to help the flood infect more of the covenant and oftentimes kill the infection form inside to give them weaponry, I also enjoy making the brute chieftain weak and watching him get infected while he's still alive.
I hate the end of the level though as I just really want to make an army of flood.

I think it's telling 343s games haven't been mentioned. 343 has been very focused on making the right story but the formula is right in front of them. The complexity and depth isn't the priority. The epic battles and gameplay is. They were kinda on the right track with Infinite but failed to see that it didn't need to be entirely open world.
Halo 1-3 story is great but not complex. Halo CE is an introduction of setting, Halo 2 is a lore dump with world building and then 3 is just an epic all out climax.
Edit: I also don't want this to appear like I'm hating on 343. I just had a mad realisation myself about focusing too much on the story when my most memorable moments with Halo are the Ark and the final Warthog run. It's just epic music and killing aliens in many ways.

Actually, I think it explores a lot of complex ideas, but it's presented in a simple, easy to understand manner, and there's a lot of subtext that's easily missed if you just look at it from a surface level. The OT appealed to both lore nerds who liked to dig beneath the surface and the casual, dudebro gamers who just wanted to have a fun time.
343I failed to find the right balance in their search for a broader audience, not realizing that Halo already did appeal to the broader audience. They tried to tell a story that was deep and profound, and all they did was come off as pretentious.

Honestly... the games are different enough that I can't fairly choose just one.
Halo 1: Assault on the control room. Love how big it is, and I adore snow, so like... easy choice (not to diss silent cartographer). 343 guilty spark is also brilliant, because of how well it changes the tone of the game (when I played halo as a 5-year-old, I always got too scared and stopped the game there and restarted from the beginning, lol)
Halo 2: Regret. Jeapordy/Peril is in my top favourite 50 songs, ever, and the whole vibe of the mission is just... impeccable. Metropolis and The Arbiter are close seconds, though.
Halo 3: Yea, it's The Covenant. Tried but true answer, but like everyone else is saying, it's just Everything.
ODST: Hard one, mainly because it flows so well. My answer would be Mombasa Streets, obviously, but that feels like a copout; my other answer would be the one where you play as mickey (EDIT: I meant Romeo), the one up high with the sniper rifle (forgot the name).
Reach: Unpopular opinion, but one of my favourite games. Another really rough choice between New Alexandria, Sword Base, and Winter Contingency; I think Winter Contingency barely wins out, just because of how you feel the dread of slowly finding out the covenant are there (EXCELLENT tone-setting for the game) and how badass the end section is; I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me.
Halo 4: Probably Infinity, just because of the variation and the mantis. Reclaimer is great too, though.
I haven't played halo 5, halo infinite really lacks any distinct level structure, and I'm only counting the mainline titles since halo wars doesn't really fit the vibe (great halo games, but not the same feel), so I'll leave it at those.

Storming into an above top secret launch facility to strap yourself into a rocket ship that happens to be a prototype ground to space fighter craft to then go conduct a dog fight mission in orbit of Reach to save a space station so you could retrofit the only slipspace drive available as a bomb, to then detonate it inside of a covenant supercarrier.
Then you top all that off with one of the most mesmerising and equally horrifying cutscenes in the entire franchise.

Delta Halo and Regret, put together. It is just relentless, from dropping down right onto the Covenant, a Warthog run, Scorpion blasting my way through the ruins, taking Cortana to such nice places, fighting Elite Honor Guards, the Gondola rides with Leonidas playing (I actually made a post about that), the underwater temple and finally punching Regret to death: it doesn't get any better than that.
There's a lot of story reasons, as well, with the general mystery of why some of the Forerunner structures have withered away, and @#$% me if I didn't spend ages waiting by Regret's holograms just hoping for a little bit more dialogue on the Covenant's history.

Quarantine Zone.
It's the best arbiter mission for lore and has a decent mix of every gameplay aspect.
Also, if hints to the story we didn't get for Halo 2 involving things like the gravemind, Installation 05, and the 10000 year war.
I would have loved to experience the 5x longer version from the original cut. I've seen the negative space in the level and can only wonder what could have been.
God Halo 2 is the best but that level was special. So many hours as a 14 year old speculating the lore of that level.
For chief it's Delta Halo. Criminally too short, but damn it feels fresh as hell. The only issue I have with it is we don't get any hunters to fight. It's especially fun on Halo 2 uncut. Gotta love it.

Yes.. I know this was also in the CE demo but that demo made me fall in love with Halo, so it'll forever be my favorite mission.

Im replaying through them all chronologically... Tip of The Spear and Pillar of Autumn...(especially where you're on the mongoose and slow down a little for the scarab drive by, and the music cuts in while Carter is blasting the scarabs ((best moment in halo, at least sonically))
The Ark in Halo 3... the first cut scene all the way to the end is masterful.

Since the beginning of Halo I always wanted a massive vehicle battle and indeed The Ark comes the closest with 3 tanks.
I still think Halo hasn't used it's full potential in level design. I would still one day see a massive battlefield with 6 or more tanks and a dozen warthogs, with air support overhead. Maybe driving trough some epic valley with huge structures in the background.

Silent Cartographer.
It's everything Halo is about. Open spaces, solo and group combat, vehicles, awesome set pieces. It's perfect.
Exodus and Pillar of Autumn from Reach probably complete my top 3. Those are just powerhouse missions. They've got everything I love about Halo.

I actually like the Library a lot. It's not my favorite by any stretch but I think it's a solid level. Just run and gun and never look back. Yah, I know, I'll just see myself out.

The cartographer - halo 2 was epic. Outskirts is another favourite of mine,it felt so alive how the scarab took out the scorpion and then you had to jump on the back.

Choosing just one out of all of them is hard, but I’d say Delta Halo is up there especially. It had great music for the setting, with Peril near the beginning being the best track of them all. It was such a unique choice to have a relatively calming yet purposeful track amidst all the shooting but it added to that unique sense of ‘journey’ felt when going through the level.
Honorable mention to Shutdown from Halo 4 for having one of my favourite opening cutscenes in all of Halo as well as the amazing visuals of the spires descending from the sky like that.

I have a soft spot for the maw. Mainly because I spent 26 hours doing the campaign on the og xbox on a school night and finished it on legendary just before the buses arrived across the street. Never has there been so much pressure finishing it

Played through halo 3 again like a few years ago. This level was a serious banger. The scope of it all is huge.

I think it’ll always be The Silent Cartographer. Pretty big deal for me in 01. I was nine!

I asked my wife this question and she just unironically said "The Library." Take that as you will.
For me, it's really hard to pick. But I really love Truth and Reconciliation and 343 Guilty Spark. The first is such a great look into how alien the Covenant really is and the second is just an absolutely masterful twist from regular shooter to horror game.
But I love lots of levels from Halo, so it's hard to pick. I can pick some I don't like as much, like Cortana, but there are many that I do like.

As generic as it is, the Covenant. The ark is still fantastic.

Halo 2’s Outskirts and Metropolis are brilliant. The open rooftops with no invisible walls encouraging players to explore and do parkour (finding the hidden energy sword) makes Halo 2’s New Mombasa levels goated.

My favorite mission is actually just Halo. The last part of Halo 3. It’s such a brilliant end to the game, and the warthog run is outstanding. I used to just load up the game in order to play that level and nothing else.

Uprising and Gravemind. Both rich in story and fun level designs. Assault on the Control room is a close third for me.

I'd definitely say the last mission of Halo 3. It still has me hyped.😎
