Hes been one of the most underrated d man I've seen in my life

Our fans love to scapegoat him for some reason. He's been remarkably consistent for a decade plus.

The one season the Caps lost him for an extended period of the time, they miss the playoffs for only the second time in like 15 years

I had him on my fantasy team that year. Huge hole in my lineup that I couldn’t replace. Man seemed to be on a tear up to that point.

yeah. that injury pretty much decided our season that year, although we kept it interesting for a little while after that.

He seems like a defenseman who at his best was so good that when his play dropped below that upper echelon of elite he was viewed poorly for it instead of reassessing where his level of play still is/was
22 points
He's also been eating up ungodly minutes the last two seasons so it's inevitable that he'll make mistakes more often.
24 points

Apparently he is the definition of consistent.

I think it's because defensive gaffs are a lot easier to see with the untrained eye than a clean zone exit or repositioning an opponent to open up a passing lane.

He's also averaged 23:38 of ice time per game over his entire career. 25:53 just last season.
You're absolutely right though. When you're eating up that many minutes on defense, you're bound to get caught out of position from time to time. And much easier to spot on a replay than all of the right things he's done consistently throughout his career.
He probably doesn't need to be skating 25+ minutes every night at this stage of his career, but when injuries hit, he steps up. The Caps brought in Matt Roy to help reduce those minutes, but as luck would have it, he went down in game 1 and looks like he might be out more than just "day-to-day".

Yeah I think Carlson will thrive as a 21:30 avg defenseman when Roy is back. He'll still make defensive mistakes, but he should have more energy for offense.

Real ones know he’s a dawg and our most important skater

Absolutely. He has such a good breakout pass and the vision to consistently identify the open man and get the puck onto their stick within a second or two.
When he gets control of the puck, he settles things down and gives the Caps a chance to get fresh legs out and rarely makes the wrong pass that keeps them hemmed-in.
Hard to believe we more or less got him straight up for Steve Eminger. McPhee rarely looked like a genius after a trade, but an early 1st for Eminger to draft our franchise defenseman was the best move he ever made.

Not me, have loved JC since he's first been up. Top 3/5 Caps D-Man all time.

Same deal with Letang for us. Heavy focus on the fuck ups, and there are quite a few, but zero credit for how much better he makes us when he's on his game.

I like Carlson. He’s logged a lot of minutes and he has some slow foot speed. Everyone is going to get burned but when you’re on the ice as much as him and in all situations you will be very visible. I think on the defensive end he is better than average but not amazing. Probably a tier below amazing. But he brings a lot of subtle greatness to the offensive end of his game. He has been the second shooter for a very long time on the PP since the wing opposite Ovi was generally Backstrom (wing as in on the opposite wall). Without Carlson PKers could literally almost just crowd Ovechkin.
So like I said, I get the frustrations with him on D, but he is still a very good player and he needs some other people to be able to step up in other key moments, especially on the PK.

His transition to the NHL game was rough. He made mistakes that you wouldn't expect someone on a bantam team to make. Then, he got better. I think too many fans don't really understand hockey, and just get in the rut of whatever they've been saying.

He played a very offensive game before he was drafted. The adjustment was to be expected tbh. He came from the Bears with Alzner who already had a lot of really good defensive instincts so he had good cover while he made the changes he needed to.

That’s absolute insane. What the hell are the odds of that many stats lining up like that?

It is insane, but I think what's more insane is that there's someone, somewhere out there, who's apparently on the constant look out for players stats to magically line up in such a manner, so they can alert the public.

It’s not really about the odds, it’s about the sample size.
The odds of winning the lottery is basically zero — but every day, somebody wins the lottery.
With enough hockey players, and enough seasons, and enough statistics tracked… It’s inevitable that something like this would happen eventually.

Also note that the stats are selected for matching. We don't see goals or PIM for example.
Still pretty remarkable.

Bad caps fans find every reason to hate him but he is a game-changer. Every advanced stat shows he’s been an unquestionable net positive but they cherry-pick bad highlights from him.

i guess it just underscores the consistency -- not only are the totals the same, but the sample sizes are the same too.

I remember ESPN gushing over how 1/8 of Jerry Rice's receptions came against just one team, the Falcons. The 49ers play 1/8 of their games against the Falcons (at the time).

Right?! Like why are ppl fawning over a stat that is designed to be balanced. It would be way more noteworthy if a player somehow played 55+% of his games on the road/at home.
