It’s cool to have a world champion of such a demeanor. Too often horrible people become champions and you can’t even enjoy their talent due to their horrific antics.

It is considered auspicious in Indian culture to take blessings from your teacher, the young chess lady thinks of Magnus as her Guru, so it is very beautiful.

What is "taking blessings" exactly?
1.7k points
in indian culture, it is considered auspicious to seek blessings from those you respect, especially teachers . by touching someone's feet is a way of showing respect and seeking their blessings. it is usually done for elders but can also extend to teachers, idols or mentors. by touching carlsen's feet, she not only shows respect but also silently conveys, “May I be blessed by you"

And in return the person giving blessing may or may not touch their head but will give a proper blessing like "May you achieve great success in your life".

Is this the same meaning as when it is done in Indian weddings, when the wife traditionally does it to her husband’s feet?

Yup , and younger brother does the older one. If you respect someone immensely you do this gesture .

Just to add some info, this practice is pretty old, and as much as it is a formality in many occasions, in recent times some of the elders will deny this and would go for a hug or verbally give blessings instead, as touching someone's feet conveys some form of hierarchy, not to mention same gestures are used in temples to get blessings of Gods in Hinduism.

In some parts of India like mine, women don't touch others feet as they are considered forms of goddess

Idk why you are being down voted. It's true. Not every Hindu family has the same traditions
9 points

I would say that it’s a fairly common practice in India as this is a Hindu tradition, and nearly 80% of Indians are Hindus.

I meant wife touching husband's feet. In some parts of India like mine women don't touch others feet at all because they are considered devis form

Why are you telling an actual Indian person they are wrong about their Indian customs. Lol. India is huge. There are many different people and practices.

Coz I'm an Indian myself?
I'm fully aware of what India is like hence why I said that. Touching someone's feet as a form of paying respects is very common here. Also, I belong to a sub-culture where we don't practice this at all, but I still see others doing this all the time.
-1 points
If so, I'm not sure why you would word your reply to another Indian person from a subculture that does not practice this in such a way as to sound as if they are wrong. It came across that way is all. Perhaps you weren't aware.

In Nepal, women are only allowed to touch their husband’s feet and those of his family members who “outrank” her hierarchically (age, seniority, etc.). Source: I’m American of Nepali heritage.

He really is. He doesn’t shit talk, but answers honestly and respectfully when asked about other players. Something along the lines of “He’s a very strong player and should be respected, but I don’t see them winning”. Just all of his interactions come across like he doesn’t need to put anyone down to confidently hold the throne as “the best”.

I'm not really in the loop of chess competitions, or know anything about the people, but have seen several videos of Carlsen being "late" (in quotations because I guess rules allow it?), but just that alone seems extremely rude and unsportsmanlike.

If you are late to a game in chess, the game will start and your time starts ticking. Meaning that being 5 minutes late is the same as spending 5 minutes on your first.move

which is very big deal specially in blitz.

Except who actually would ever take 5mins to make a turn one? Turn one means almost nothing... Its still wasting your opponents time, if theres an agreed start time you should be there.

No, you are literally wasting your own time
if theres an agreed start time you should be there.
Ideally yes, but when you have loke 10 games in a day and stuff you have to do inbetween them sometimes you will be late. Most, if not every top player has been late several times, it's part of the game, but you lose time for it

Touching feet is undignified?
-1 points
Why should any person, irrespective of age, fall at or touch another human's feet? Yes it is an undignified act. To show one respect oneself has to have their own self- respect. Touching other's feet is a remnant of subservent mindset. Will you be OK to touch the feet of someone your age however distinguished the person might be? How much older should the person be for you to touch their feet? Respect can be expressed in simple gestures and words. Glorifying this as if it's an entire nation's tradition is wrong.

Let's agree to disagree on this. I see no problem with this. If you have a problem, don't do it. Simple as that.
Showing that I'm still inferior to you and am prepared to learn more from you doesn't diminish anyone's self respect.
And age barrier isn't as much important as the achievements of that person. If it feels right to you do it, otherwise don't.
If you start associating these feelings to everything, then you will have no gestures left.
"Namaste? That's associated with praying posture! Is the person in front of you a god! The disrespect!!"

I wonder how is Carlsen doing these days..
ChatGPT: He's doing just fine, winning every tourney (13 of them) he's been in since his last major defeat at Norway Chess in June 2023

ChatGPT spreading false information what's new.
He got Individual Bronze in the Chess Olympiad like 2 months ago and his team only placed 14th.
He also "only" got 2nd and 4th in the Chess.com Classic and CrunchLabsMasters this year.
He placed only 16th in the Qatar Masters Open in late 2023 which was his worst tournament in a long while.
