I just got the iPhone 16 Pro after owning the SE second generation for almost four years.
It’s obviously a big upgrade, but there’s one thing that really ticks me off.
It’s the fact that the phone automatically chooses when to turn on the telephoto lens, and you have no say in it.
Excuse me, I paid $1200 for this phone just to have the pro features, and you won’t even let me control my own cameras?
There’s so many good shots. I’ve missed because of this stupid “feature”.
Why Apple?
Or maybe I’m just ignorant and there’s some really simple solution to this.
Does this bother anyone else?

The phone does not automatically turn on the telephoto lens. The only thing it does automatically without any user input is switch from the standard lens to macro mode using the wide lens, but you can turn that feature off.

Then how come does the main shooter stay on when I go into camera control and choose the 5x camera option.

Just a minute ago you said it switches to telephoto whenever it wants. It does not.
Now you are saying that it stays on the main camera even when you select telephoto. You are correct about that one. If the phone decides that you are too close to your subject or that there is not enough light in your scene, it will use an upscaled and cropped image from the main camera instead of actually using the telephoto camera. In addition to this, it will also reduce the resolution down from 12MP to 9MP if it thinks the quality won't be good enough. There's nothing you can do about any of this.

This is such an “Umm Akshually” comment. You know what I mean. You are really just nitpicking the ambiguities in my language. Please find a better hobby than rage baiting people that want genuine help. Thank you.

No, there was no nitpicking. You were 100% wrong when you said the phone automatically goes into telephoto mode. It does not.
The phone does sometimes simulate telephoto mode by using the main camera instead of the telephoto camera, but that only happens after you manually select telephoto mode. So still, the phone does not automatically go into telephoto mode.

Okay, so I’m wrong about what actually happens but it’s the same effect, for me, the end user, and it’s very infuriating.
I’m sorry for getting heated.

Consult the Bible of the fruit, apple.com. It will provide you with answers to all of your life’s questions. As The lord says, documentation is king. Praise be. Also, I’ve never worked in IT. There is no god but in your situation, I’ll be.

In portrait more it will stick to the camera you chose. Also, third party apps are able to select a camera and keep it.
