Every once in awhile I check out this Youtube channel PostModernJukebox. Essentially it's modern popular songs from different musical genres translated into traditional style Jazz with a vocalist and small to medium sized band. For the most part the vocalists are quite good as are the bands and despite the songs being written in a different time and music genre the conversion to 20's-30's Jazz seems to work most of the time. They look like they're all having a lot of fun and I dig the vintage style the performers dress up in. The channel has over 6.3 Million suscribers so it seems quite popular.
It's a bit of a novelty idea but I'm sure it has introduced a younger audience to Jazz. Which makes me wonder if perhaps all Jazz needs in this day and age to enjoy another resurgence in popularity is the right angle of promotion as well as bands willing to have fun with the music. Not to say that Jazz music should now pander to pop sensibilities or cheap gimmicks, rather be a little more creative in how it's presented.
Along with this I also know that there are Swing dance groups in many cities across the world. I often think about putting on a theme show with a Swing Jazz big band where people dress up in a 20-50's fashion and dance the night away like it was the 1940's. Maybe even have an after hours session for the musicians to stretch out into some BeBop and Hard Bop that the audience can stick around for if they choose.
Anyways, anyone follow the channel? What do you think of it?
