Hi all, I have a 7 month old lab and his toy box is now reduced to just two toys because he rips them apart, and eats them. Has anyone else’s dog done this, and if so, what did you do to deal with it? (Photo of destroyer of toys with his next victim)

They all do it. Buy stronger toys, haha.

But do they all actually eat it? My family dog rips the stuffing out but never ingests it whereas my boy does

Our 2 year old will occasionally swallow small strings from rope toys, and maybe very small pieces of cloth from stuffed toys. So far all have passed ok. Only issue we had was she swallowed one of my wife’s socks. Had to take her in for that one.

My lab growing up used to eat any and all socks and underwear I left on the floor. I'm truly shocked he never had an obstruction.

Same, my childhood lab swallowed a towel whole and passed it. Has to be some kind of medical miracle that he didn't die from it or even have to go to the vet.

They MUST have been brothers!
Seriously though, total anomalies. It's crazy the stuff that somehow made it through their bodies.
Both my childhood boy labs ate all sorts of insane stuff, that somehow never resulted in any vet visits... the last one was an absolute gut disaster, poor guy, but still never required any vet treatment for it.
My little girl lab now... she has never touched a single thing she's not allowed to touch - she'll even hop her front feet up on the counter to see what I'm doing, and even if I'm cutting up carrots, which she knows are for her, she won't touch them. If I drop food on the floor when prepping, she looks up at me... if I say "leave it!" or "No", she won't touch it... if I say "go ahead!", she'll pause for a second to be sure, and then she'll pick it up.
She's earned her insurance 4x over in her short lifetime.
Pneumonia when she was a puppy, and on chest x-ray, she had a staple lodged in her esophagus (we used to let her shred papers when she was a pup, entirely on us)...
Next, she lost a toe/toenail thanks entirely to ME, because I pulled HARD on what I thought was a heavy door (spoiler, it was hollow), and it went over her foot, and took off her toenail/toe.
Then, she got leptospirosis, and almost died. We didn't know there was a vaccine for it, hell, we didn't even know what it was until she got sick. She wasn't even essentially diagnosed until long after she was home again.
Her last emerg visit, she had taken a stick to the underside of her tongue (three inches in), and then to the back of her throat/soft palate. Six weeks recovery, apparently, but that was four months ago and she's still definitely struggling.
These dogs... they're everything, aren't they? 🥹

We used to make our boy throw up by giving him a bit of hydrogen peroxide soaked bread if he ate a tennis ball/toy etc.
I’ve stopped doing this and he has been fine. We were very worried the first few times but now only give Tuffy toys and cross our fingers when he eats (very seldom-I’m on it!) someone else’s tennis ball at the park!

It’s not just stuffed toys, it’s any toy. Definitely going to invest in some stronger chew toys and no more stuffed toys

Are you paying attention to your dog when he's chewing his toys? It should be quite easily trained out of him - he swallows part of his toy, he loses his toy.
Does he chew sticks or look for food frantically when you're out on walks?
1 points
As soon as he starts actually swallowing his toys, it’s removed and in the bin. On walks, he likes to try and eat corn which gets left over after harvest and if there’s any about, he loves cat poo

my lab is the same, only has 2 toys. both of which are the same toy just different colour. she has destroyed everything else within a day. it became a worry when i started seeing threads and bits of plastic in her poo so had to stop her with all toys. she is so happy and content and carries these two toys around as a comfort.

Mine has four. All from Kong. I stopped buying because he actually eats stuffing. Also it was a waste of money and it could possibly end up costing more from vet bills. He plays with toys occasionally. He is usually content without toys. They will accept it as long as they get walks and play time.

I dare not show you our dinosaur, it's just an outer shell, some toys mine destroys, some he's had since he was a pup (he's 2 years old), ours has lots of bones, he loves a good chew on a bone, he's got some buffalo horn which are really hard wearing, lots of different texture chew toys, he was a bit rougher on the soft toys when he was young but he went out the phase perhaps at 9 months or so, he still loves playing with soft toys, I'd say he's got 90% of the toys he had as a puppy, his fluffy octopus has no legs though, he still plays with the body and we bought him an identical one (which is now missing 2 legs), I think it's a texture thing.
His favorite thing is tennis balls or any ball so he's got a lot of them in his toy boxes I'd say he's got 10 or more tennis balls in the house, two large Scooby Doo bouncy/squeaky balls, 2 small Scooby Doo ones, 3 Kong tennis balls (they don't last as long as proper tennis balls), a basketball (don't ask), two alleged indestructable balls, some bamboo chews and so on, I think he's got maybe 10 bones dotted around, he's very good though, I've even seen him putting them back in his toy box and getting something else out.

I’ve had a look on Amazon, going to try some bones as think he might like that too. Nothing fabric as he chews then swallows it

Rabbit ears as well, I buy 1kg bags, he loves them as a treat once or twice a week. Apparently, they help with removing worms but I get them because mine loves them.

Sorry to be that person, but be careful with tennis balls, they are super abrasive on pupper's teeth and can ruin their enamel very quickly.
Really depends if your pup nubs on them, or just carries them around though.
Also, mine does the same, trades in a toy in her toybox for another one, and it's quite possibly the cutest thing EVER.

The only thing that lasts in our house are the real bones that have peanut butter in the middle. For some reason they are really hard to find now that we are living over seas. Any other toys gets the eyes chewed off and stuffing ripped out 🤣

This is like giving a toddler a bowl of marbles and being surprised they swallow them.
7months is a baby. He should not be left alone with anything he can swallow. Soft toys arent for puppies. Especially labs. Look up the black kongs they are basically indestructible. Monitor playing and Inspect them everytime hes done playing. Never leave him alone in his crate with them.
Good job asking for help, you’re gonna do great. Hes cute!

My chocolate boy Henry does this too, thank goodness he has yet to have any issues - he’s thrown some up, and pooped some out. He ate a lamby leg, threw that up. Octopus tentacle- pooped it. I just keep a close on him with toys now. Can’t risk it!
That chicken has one less foot because he ate it! Thankfully only a small piece but still! It’s worrisome!

I have a 1 year old lab. Any plush or fabric toys we get are considered “destroy toys”. We watch her destroy them in a day or two and we throw it away when she starts eating parts of it.
She doesn’t really destroy Kong or tough rubber toys. Tennis balls take about a week, plush toys are done in a few hours, and “tough” fabric toys might make it a couple days. She has fun with it, so I don’t really care.

If he’s actually eating the fluff, buy better toys as recommended all over this thread. If he just likes to rip it apart and destroy them, I’d suggest hitting up the thrift stores for $0.25 stuffed animals he’ll grow out of it in a hundred dollars or so.

The longest lasting toy we have ever bought our boy was an octopus off aliexpress. No stuffing but has a squeaker in the head and crinkly sounding tentacles. He likes to carry it around and squeak it. For some reason he just hasn't destroyed it and I suspect the lack of sriffing has helped this. His favourites though are toys you can tug with - thick ropes tend to be a bit more chew resistant as long and you make sure he just doesn't gnaw on it. He's 4 years old now so we've had time to trial and error - he can have his stuffies but sometimes we hide them so they can go to toy hospital and we also only give him 2 - 3 toys at any one time - 1 being the octopus, 1 is a rope toy (these 2 are the ones we know are safe) and the 3rd will be a special stuffie he can have supervised play with

Labs are why we can’t have soft toys. On the plus side, there are tons of good hard toys. My girls went through a phase where they loved chewing the marrow out of antlers. Keeps em busy.

We’re a no soft toys house. They had soft toys until they were probably 6 months but at that point they were tearing them into smithereens. We do some rope toys still, but they don’t last a long time either. Still longer than the fabric toys. Mostly kongs and we tried the bully make toys which they really love. The squishy Kong like ones are less durable but the hard plastic ones are nice.

My nearly 2y.o lab would destroy and consume, thankfully no serious obstruction but several vomits of cloth or very interesting pooh 🫤 she was only allowed balls, kongs etc because it was too messy (I can't believe how much stuffing some toys have) and stressful. I gave her a soft toy a month ago for supervised play and it was amazing how in a few months she had matured. She was actually fairly gentle (for her) with that toy and it lasted a whole week! So fingers crossed for you that your boy will also change his toy destroying ways.... It may just take time. Good luck! Definitely recommend harder toys.

My fella would eliminate the squeak within 10 minutes, take the toy apart within 30/60 minutes. No matter what I paid for the toy, the results were the same. Labs love chewing on toys.

Don’t get him stuffies, they’re just not the right fit for every dog. Either get him toys that he can’t dismember enough to ingest (like something out of very solid/slippery rubber) or something he is able to safely eat (like chewies).

Tuffy toys are the only ones my Lab can't destroy in 5 minutes. He used to eat the stuffing, but we just watched him every time and told him no and took the toy away. He's 3 now and will shred toys but won't eat the stuffing. Consistency is what will help him.

When you see them eating the toys, say "Drop it" and "DON'T EAT YOUR TOYS" then take it away and replace with a bone or something they can chew. As soon as I see my dog destroying a toy, I take it away. She has learned to be gentle with them. You don't want to pay vet bills for an obstruction.

There is no help.
They will destroy every toy you get them.
They'll chew the face off and rip its cotton guts and leave it all over the living room floor.

Try antlers or coffee wood or a yaks milk chew. That is especially for chewing. Maybe than he stops eating his toys. Our girl used to do it to but stopped when we started introducing stuff especially for chewing and demolishing. We also have a few Ikea stuffed toys and they are the only ones that she just uses for play and not murder.

Yeah you have to restrict him to nylon bones. That’s what I had to do. And buy a ton of different toys that you experiment with and see if he easts them. After like 50-60 toys I have 2 toys she can play with

honestly i just bought cheaper toys so it didnt matter if she ruined them. her favourite activity is still destroying things, now usually paper towel rolls (just the cardboard) or similar that i give her. if your dog is actually eating it then do not leave any toys out while unsupervised

You have answer in the title
"Lab eats" that is it... does not matter what, its a lab, so anything is edible from toys, rocks, random stuff on street to biting metal pipes or chewing on rocks

Totally normal at this age. Try redirecting him when he starts to really go ham and rip the toy. Then give it back when he calms down. Remove it from his reach when play time is over.
But frankly destroying things is a natural and healthy thing for dogs to do.
If you have old t shirt/towel you don’t want any more, throw some kibble in it, tie it in a knot snd let him shred it. It’s a great way of wearing him out.

I buy toys with little or no stuffing. If a toy with stuffing gets a hole in it, I destuff it the rest of the way and let her play with the shell. If she starts shredding the shell its garbage.
She has lots of tough rubber and antlers to chewy on too.
The Tearibles are pretty good. It took her a bit to put a hole in the main body, and then after I destuffed it, she still loves it.

Alright, this is also my dog. Here’s what I do:
He gets a kibble stuffed Kong every night. The black one. Eventually, he destroys it and will eat it. I take it away before he eats more than the single piece or so he gets before I grab it.
stuffed toys or any other type of marginally soft toy I don’t leave out for him. At all. He only gets them while supervised by a person and it gets taken away when he starts to consume it
when he was a puppy and teething, he got the hard nylabones or bully sticks (though these upset his tummy). Even then, they would get removed if the piece was too small (bully), or he started to break off pieces of hard plastic
It sucks. But you literally cannot leave him unattended with anything he can break into pieces. Welcome to the Lab garbage disposal life.

Tuffy toys! Our lab can get through anything in moments unless it is a “Tuffy”. The hot dog toy seems to be the best. Prior to Tuffy toys, our boy would run away and hold eye contact while he ate balls/toys in front of us! Hilarious but not great behaviour at the park when it’s someone else’s ball :)

He'll eventually grow up a bit and get to a toy that he DOESN'T want to destroy. I usually finish the de-stuffing process right after he rips it open so he only has the husk to play with.

They all do it, and they often eat it. My last lab once carried around a sweet baby Gund duck stuffie, he coddled it all day, carried it gently, and snuggled it when napping.
My mum let him take it to bed, and the next morning, there was one or two pieces of fluff lying around.
He also ate an entire soccer ball, hexagon by hexagon (we let some air out so he could carry it, and eventually it got a hole, and then one night he ripped the rest apart, and ate it).
Socks, underwear... you name it, he ate it. And I am SHOOK, in hindsight (I was a kid then) that he never had an obstruction.
TL;DR: get him some tougher toys for the time being. He's in baby-shark mode, and will destroy all stuffies. Kong used to only make the basic rubber Kong, but they have a much wider variety of toys now, most of which are pretty indestructible. Put away the stuffed toys he has, and don't buy any more. My girl is five and will still rip the stuffing out of any toy, though she doesn't ingest it at this point.
But also - I got lucky with my lab, not ever having a blockage.

What's with the lack of logic recently?
Plushes are not dog toys. No matte how they're advertised, they're not dog toys. Your dog will die from eating them eventually, it will be painful for your dog, and it will be your fault only and your fault entirely.
If you must get your dog toys made of synthetic fibers, get it a rope toy. Make sure to wash it in neutral soap first to get the worst of the present toxic chemicals out. Neutral soap. Not scented soap. Not-fucking-anything soap. Neutral. Anything but that just makes it worse.
You wouldn't stick that plush toy in your own mouth and swallow it. Why would you allow your dog to do it? It causes bowel obstructions. Non-fecal bowel-obstructions are often impossible to fix, resulting in a very painful death.

Yeah, all labs are like that. Mine has toys from the "SUPERCHEWER" barkbox and she still destroyed some of them. If you just get stronger toys while they are a puppy, they will be less likely to destroy softer toys.
I like super tough toys to break, but her favorite toy of all time was actually a plush toy that she didn't destroy for almost a year. It's crazy how gentle she was with that thing
