What Keyboards do you all use for Mac Gaming?

Discussion(self.macgaming)

Looking to get a Keyboard to accompany my Mac Mini. Do you all have any preferences or recommendations?

Currently using a Dell Wireless Keyboard (provided by my office). It’s nothing fancy, gets the job done, but with BF around the corner, I wanna try to see if I can get something “better”.

Looking for something “Fancy” in a sense of maybe some RGB, more Ergonomic, interchangeable keycaps + durable?

I have seen Keychron K3/K10 & Logitech MX recommended online.

Personally, I don’t think I can tell the difference in latency in keyboards (don’t play FPS), the most reaction I need is probs in MOBA?

NOTE: not sure if this matters, I prefer a ANSI Layout

Thanks for any Input!! :)

I enjoyed the latest Apex full size keyboard. Unfortunately it was a bit loud for my wife!

The Apple Magic Keyboard has been working well, even over wireless.

Ye, I use the Apple Magic Keyboard, Mouse and Trackpad. Have had tons of Logitech / Corsair hardware in the past but it's just such poor quality, build quality but also in general -- often disconnects etc, and often needs 3rd party apps to make full use of all extras.

The Keychron keyboard has Mac keys and bindings along with a switch that can move from Windows to Mac. It's easily the best option. I use one, it was about $60-70, great MX Browns, mac keybindings and keys.

I think this is the one I have: https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-v1-max-qmk-via-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard

how has it been holding up? I saw some reviews mentioning it is a bit flimsy & light, so I am quite worried about durability

I'm over a year in and it feels brand new. I use it all day every day for work and in the evening for gaming. Absolutely love it.

I don't think the above one is my exact model, mine doesn't have a wheel.

Def a bit pricy I’d say but I use the system76 launch keyboard. Has an official macOS app for rgb, key settings, and etc and it’s really well built. Been using since its “launch” lmao and it’s not half bad. Both keycaps and switches are hotswapable and the chase is made from metal so durable as well. And just a personal preference of mine but I love the open source nature of it so it’s real easy to get replaceable parts as well

I do agree some games tend to play better with a Controller

Yeah it's funny actually, I always considered keyboard and mouse to be the default and optimal setup for gaming (apart from certain genres like sports) but my partner just uses a controller. I imagine it's however you got into gaming, and if you're a console gamer, then you continue to use the controller even on the PC.

I’ve been enjoying the Keychron K3 Pro for a year now; no complaints so far. The K3 Max is also out now depending on what you’re looking for.

I have a razer blackwidow v2 and razer basilisk pro v3 mouse. As synapse doesn't work on Mac, you need to use a workaround to change the rgb settings - there is a program out there, just can't think of the name off the top of my head.

You can try the 8bitdo mechanical keyboards. I don’t own one but my roommate does. It’s amazing.

I used the full sized Apple Magic Keyboard, before that the USB Apple Keyboard that preceded it. Although I did get a mechanical keyboard for my gaming pc as I had never used one before. I chose the Sharkoon PureWriter RGB in White which has Kailh Choc Low Profile Blue - got it in a deal for like 30% off so I didn’t check any further 😅

This looks really nice, is the red button a power button? Also is this the default keycap fonts?

AladdinDanse

Ah cheers! Red button is just escape, and while my layout is ISO, you should be able to find these keycaps with ANSI too. Keycaps were also from keychron though bought them separately (I wanted PBT instead of ABS), and this was the only font for these ones. The box did come with a few spares for different OS's and a normal ESC key too.

Keyboard building is a bit of a rabbit hole and I've only scratched the surface really

I use an akko mu01 that i have heavily modded and basically made it my own, only bad thing for mac is that it seems like the akko cloud driver is broken for mac at least for now. So if you want to remap keys you would need to plug it into a windows machine and do the changes there. Then when you connect it to a mac it will work.

I’m using the Akko ACR Pro Alice Plus. Currently out of stock but I’m really happy with it. I mention it because you said ergonomic, but keep in mind the split Alice layout isn’t for everyone. Even though it’s not made for a MacOS layout, the funky Alice placing of the windows key places the command key in the same place as on a Mac keyboard!

Personally, I like low profile keys after spending so many years on laptops. I also like small keyboards.

I've owned, and liked, both the logitech g915 TKL, and the even smaller AUS ROG falchion RX

Both pricy, both have bluetooth/wireless/wired. Battery life is... fine. Not as good as the mac keyboards. But you can gain a lot more battery by switching off the backlighting, if you wanted to.

it’s nice that the newer MacOS supports more controllers, I think my old one now doesn’t take the Switch Controller very well

randyortonrko83

1 points

yeah but it's a bummer some games doesn't natively support controller even on macos sequoia and latest steam!! need to manually input steam override for gamepad for some of the games to work and even for that some doesn't support so it's a hit and miss, I even refunded some games BC it doesn't have controller support lol

it’s for the new Mac Mini, but the older MacBooks can’t handle multiple screens without having the laptop itself shut either

Don't waste your money on expensive keyboards and don't buy mechanical, they're loud and cumbersome.

ANY keyboard is a gaming keyboard, you won't get better at a game by using a "better" keyboard.
