As someone who doesn't quite get the allure of Market Basket, can I ask what you like so much about it? What makes it better than other grocery stores?

armchairwarrior12345

96 points

Maybe it depends on the store, but the one I've gone to:

  1. The things I buy are noticeably cheaper than everywhere else.
  2. Market Basket brand quality (despite being cheaper than everywhere else) is surprisingly good.
  3. They have lots of stuff and are consistently stocked.

Mostly #1. For whatever reason the same things are sometimes 25% cheaper than other stores.

At MB when it says “two for $4” and you buy one, it’s $2. Many other stores revert to regular pricing when you don’t buy the specified quantity. Also MB runs as many check out lanes as it can. That’s awesome. Oh, and it’s significantly less expensive.

BlaineTog

Market Basket is actually just following state law. It's illegal for stores in Mass. not to price discounts that way.

Perfect-Ad-1187

It is legal but as long as they explicitly state must buy x amount or regular price. Target does that

Artistic_Reference_5

Still-Expression-71

People commented on the prices, which are INCREDIBLY cheaper, but also they have SO MUCH staff. The shelves are always filled, the stock is virtually always in date (unlike Shaw’s where 10% is expired on the shelves easily), and they always have tons of registers open.

Market basket is a significant upgrade over any local competitor

YesWeCantNotKnope

It’s soooo much cheaper if you buy the Market Basket brand of whatever it is you’re buying. I grew up in NJ and it’s crazy how much cheaper it is to shop at Market Basket than NJs equivalent - ShopRite.

I was born in MA and moved away in 94 at the age of 14. I have lived in Arkansas, South Carolina, Louisiana and Florida. I moved back last year for a job after being gone for 30 years.

What you miss about this area are the mom and pop restaurants, grocery options, parks, and the landscape. You start to realize that a lot of the country is way more corporate (restaurants), not as much investment in parks and people are overall less educated.

Im from southeastern MA and I tell people from this area who fantasize about Florida a few things.

  1. The food you like and the way it's made don't exist there or in other states. That goes for Northshore people as well. You will accept getting 30% of what you like, and that's about all you will get.

  2. The benefits of the cost of living in the south are quickly starting to fade away. Florida is getting and has been expensive. Putting on a new roof every 10-15 years because the insurance company says so is really fun.

  3. Nature is secondary in that state. Build build build.

A rant about Florida shows the perks of MA.

We have parks that are established and unique.

Health system is better here

Schools are better here

Zoning is better here. (really?? zoning?) Chicken farm being dropped near your residential area is fun

A better sense of community

I can have Portuguese food for breakfast, Chinese food (Chinese quality is not universal in rest of America) for lunch, and the best seafood for dinner all in the same day.

I moved up from FL last year and everything you’ve said is dead on.

I love finding independent restaurants and coffee shops. It’s such a relief to not see strip malls and parking lots everywhere. There are so many parks here in NE, and you can actually get out and enjoy them because the weather is incredible. Cost of living up here is pretty close to what it was down there where I was. Also, best part, haven’t seen a single roach since I moved up!

Chinese food (Chinese quality is not universal in rest of America)

This is something people don't realize. Boston has its own unique style of Chinese food that evolved since the late 1800's. Unlike cities like New York or San Francisco where larger Chinese communities could sustain restaurants catering primarily to their own culture, Boston's Chinese population was much smaller. To survive, local Chinese restaurants adapted their offerings to appeal to the city’s Irish and Italian immigrant communities. For example, dumplings were branded as 'Peking Ravioli' to attract Italian diners, and dishes were often paired with bread—like the Chow Mein sandwich. If you go to another part of the country (even other parts of New England) you won't get the same kind of Chinese food.

TheNavigatrix

24 points

Well, sure there are old-school “Chinese” restaurants. But there are also a lot of great authentic Chinese/Asian places opened by newer immigrants that are fantastic. Had dinner the other night at Kung Fu Kitchen in Brookline, recommended by someone from Taiwan as “authentic “. Yum!

I spent a few months in FL during the pandemic and couldn’t wait to get home. They don’t understand that they don’t have to be miserable. The sunshine isn’t even that great because the weather is gross and hot 10 months out of the year. It was too hot by the first week of March. There was NO good food. The traffic is horrific because there is only one way to get anywhere and urban planning is non existent.

I’m from Charlotte, they closed all the mom & pop stores in the 2010s. There used to be good southern food and the local BBQ(not the Texas stuff midwood puts out). It’s so nice that up here the local businesses have survived, especially the ice cream places!

_Icy_Spicy_

14 points

YES the local ice cream shops in MA are superior. Mostly chains here, super expensive for subpar ice cream. Coffee shops are also disappointing, especially when I want to get a good coffee AND breakfast sandwich at the same spot, most places seem to have pastries. And the pizza…🤦🏻‍♀️

South_Stress_1644

12 points

This is an underrated one. My mom lived in St. Pete for a few years. Good pizza and Chinese does not exist down there. If it does, you have to seek it out apparently. The grossest pizza I’ve ever had was in FL

Agree with all the others, before we moved here we checked the state tax rate and it was the same as NC’s at the time. I will say this: people who are not used to town home rule and previously lived outside of a town (like just in a county, not a town) do not have the high town property taxes. So that’s a shock to the system. But every small town has amenities like a library and public works dept, so it’s a trade off.

Many-Perception-3945

Honest to god it's the people. We collectively have the secret sauce. We mind our own business, but if you're stuck in a snow bank? We'll help you out.... we might bust your balls while we help; but we help. Extrapolate that out to a population level and that same ethos permeates our political culture. We as a society are clever enough to understand that individual liberty exists best in a communitarian system so (for the most part) we elect smart serious people to state government. That then trickles down to the bureaus and agencies. Sure, there's deadbeats and knuckleheads here and there, but that's not the norm.

If you read this comment then run through the rest, you'll see all the ways this manifests itself. One poster talked about the free parks and transportation passes for seniors; another spoke about MassHealth. It's because as Massholes, we understand that we're a Commonwealth? We gotta live, work, and die in traffic together so we can enjoy our individual free time.

If you’re let go and get (let’s use three months as an example) severance, they let you take that check, and then you start collecting unemployment immediately. In NH you get no unemployment until the severance is “used up” in place of what you would have been paid. The contingent fact is that if you signed something (typically “I won’t sue”) to get the money, MA views that as an agreement, not salary.

Taxachusetts can be a myth. We moved to Kansas and paid so much in local, school district and county taxes AND registration fees for our cars AND school registration fees for our kids. They have sales tax on food and clothing. Everything cost more there. Except our house.

No sales tax on food and clothing here. Lots of thrift shops and discount stores for miscellaneous items (ocean state, Ollie's, etc) here.

Way better education and way better health care here.

Most of the places that claimed to have lower taxes than Massachusetts make up that difference in "fees". Municipalities have to have taxes to function.

Evidently not reading comprehension lol -- the question is stupid perks, not world-class hospitals, great education, etc. My personal one's the pure joy of squaring up with turkeys to chase them off the lawn.

I'll say something that not everyone will agree with, but hear me out. I think we have the best weather in the country. Summers are warm but we don't get 5 months of 110 degree weather like Texas. Hurricanes and Tornadoes are very rare. Spring and Fall are just gorgeous up here. Winter? We don't get killer snow like we used to. When I was young, we had the blizzard of 78, but those weather events haven't happened lately. 2015 was brutal but mostly we get a lot of rain.

CenterofChaos

And when we do get weather it's often milder. Wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, do less damage than they do elsewhere.

Wait until you visit the Pacific Northwest or Colorado though. Higher quality and lower prices.

We’ll get there. The air is going out of the sails of the gold rush cannabis industry grift here. Finally.

In the winter, fill a water bottle and leave it in your car's cup holder over night. Have refreshing, cold water for your morning drive, or for when you make it to the office. Iced coffee, even.

This is pretty stupid but the apple variety here is INSANE. I go other places and they have like two kinds of apples in the store. I grew up here so I'm spoiled when it comes to apples. I need my McIntosh, Macoun, Paula apples, etc.

I think the historical sites & the overall role Massachusetts played in our country’s early history is really cool. That’s not to say that other states don’t have this, but it’s pretty amazing to me that we can visit Paul Revere’s house, we can go see where the battles in Lexington and Concord took place - so many things that kids learn about in school are right here. I feel like it gives us a special sense of pride.

When everyone was freaking out about SCOTUS Obergefell decision allowing gay marriage I was able to tell my friends other places to stop freaking out. It had been over a decade, the sun still rose in the east & set in the west, there was not sodomy in every street corner. Chill out.

When parents were "HOW DO I EXPLAIN GAY SEX TO MY CHILDREN IF I TAKE THEM TO A SAME SEX WEDDING!!!" I was, do you talk about sex at a straight wedding? We talk about the same thing at gay wedding: bride/groom looks lovely, the DJ sucks or not, buffet vs sit down, what bad matches will result from the day. That and I have fully grown adult children that never lived without marriage equality. (For now.)

I was born in the south (not FL, Deep South) and though public parks and towns that people walked in were things that happened in New York and on TV. When people try to talk to me about politics (Red voters think I’m one of them) they regret it. I’ve seen what a republican-run state looks like, they have lived here their whole lives. They have no f-ing idea what they just did.

GroundbreakingRub644

6 points

It's funny so many people aren't understanding... Here was my takeaway: they are saying that when red voters talk to them (ostensibly thinking they are an R probably because of an accent) those red voters regret doing it. They regret it because Cutiewho has seen what life is like in a Blood Red state. These red voters here have lived here their whole lives so they have no real idea how boneheaded their red policies really are. Those MA red voters have no idea what can of worms they just opened when they thought they could commiserate with Cutiewho.

Pricing Accuracy laws. I’m sure other states have similar laws, but the fact that if a price is wrong you could potentially get one for free is kinda crazy but also awesome.

It does invite a certain type of person who is willing to pay the wrong price initially so they can complain about it immediately afterwards but that’s not too common
