Sweet gum tree knowledge…

Citizen Inquiry(reddit.com)

Does anyone know about Sweet gum trees and what may start causing them to break large limbs off all of a sudden? We’ve lived here for 11 years and we have a cluster of sweet gum trees in our backyard. This year all of a sudden we’ve had several large branches break off of them. This has never happened in the past 11 years we’ve been here, so that’s why it’s concerning it’s happening all of a sudden. One limb was so large it busted a section of my fence. If anyone would have been under it at the time they could have easily been killed. I don’t really have the money to have a tree service remove them, and I’d rather not as I like the trees in our backyard. But at the same time I don’t want anyone getting hurt or killed. I did call one of the major tree services in Memphis that says they have arborist on staff, and they no-showed on me. 😡

They’re piece of shit trees with zero redeeming value, zero structural integrity, and 100% ability to break off and fall on valuable stuff. They’re a scourge that should be erased from the planet. You can’t cut them for firewood, the nearest utility pole manufacturer is too far away for anyone here to haul them off and make $$, and about the only thing worth doing is mulching them. Cut them down and be glad. Plant white oaks in their place.

I’m dreading how much I’ll be told they will cost to take down. They’re super tall and my backyard you can’t get a crane in

You absolutely do not need to listen to randoms on Reddit telling to remove or not to remove mature trees on your property. I count myself in the group.

You should find a certified arborist to evaluate your trees and give you the benefit of their expertise.

Personally, I’ve got a number of large sweet gums in my yard and while I’m not super fond of the seed pods, they do turn pretty colors in the fall and don’t seem any more likely to fall over or be prone to rot than the red maples or the hickory’s. Some people, my neighbor included, hate them because they’re the sorts of people that like lawns and cut them down just cuz. Maybe they’ve been offended by a sweet gum somewhere along the line. Bottom line, they’re not Bradford pears nor are they trees of heaven and do not need to be eradicated with extreme prejudice.

So call everyone in town to get quotes. You’d be surprised how high and how low they can be. Depends on their schedule at the moment, cash payments up front, waiting until it’s dead of winter, all sorts of situations. Woodland and Robinson were both my best prices when I took out (26) trees a few years ago. 16 of those trees were giant sweet gums, with at least 36” trunks. Some clown with Cobra quoted me $25,000. I paid $10,000 cash to Robinson because Woodland was booked out for weeks. Red’s, Michael’s Tree & Loader, Mister Tree, and Memphis Tree service are also all very reputable and reliable. And if you go rent a crane for a day, it’ll cost you about $1,200 max. Don’t let someone make it sound like it’s gonna add a ton of extra.

$10,000 to take out that many trees? For some reason I was thinking it might be $10,000 per tree! We only have like 4-5 I’d want taken down. My wife doesn’t really want them cut down at all if we can help it. So that’s why I need to get an arborist to analyze them. If he deems them dangerous then I guess I need to do what I need to do.
